Dual Champion Heart’s Cry Dies At 22

Japanese and UAE champion and top sire Heart's Cry (Jpn) (Sunday Silence–Irish Dance {Jpn}, by Tony Bin {Ire}) died on Mar. 9, the Japanese Racing Association (JRA) announced on Friday. The 22-year-old was in good health until he passed, due to a sudden inability to stand.

Teruya Yoshida, CEO of Shadai Farm, said in a statement, “Hearts Cry ran out of steam last night [Thursday]. I heard from the person in charge of the Shadai Stallion that he left nobly and without showing any weakness until the very end.

“When training, he had a unique gait, but the difference in the springs shown on the training course was obvious. I had worked on many Sunday Silence progeny before, but the way they bounced, agility, and propulsion were so different that I handed them over to trainer Kojiro Hashiguchi with great confidence.”

Bred by Shadai Farm, the April foal went into training with Hashiguchi and carried the Shadai Racing Horse silks with honour in three countries. Best known for his defeat of paternal half-brother Deep Impact (Jpn) in the 2005 Arima Kinen (video), he showcased his quality on the world stage, taking the 2006 G1 Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai, and finished a respectable third in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond S. later that year.

Yoshida added of the dark bay's racing career, “The highlight of my racing life is probably his three races from the end of [his] 4-year-old year to early in his 5-year-old season, especially when he defeated Deep Impact in the Arima Kinen. I was worried that the opponent would be the only rival and Heart's Cry would have a dirty image after that, but the overwhelming victory in the next round of the Dubai Sheema Classic proved that the level of horse racing in Japan has progressed to a tremendous level, and it has been a great opportunity for the officials, fans and media. Everyone was happy.”

Retired to stand at Shadai Stallion Station in 2007 after five wins from 19 starts and over $8 million in earnings, Heart's Cry would spend his entire stallion career there. The sire of 63 black-type winners (44 group), his best runner was versatile mare Lys Gracieux (Jpn), who won the Arima Kinen in 2019, as well as the G1 Cox Plate, G1 Takarazuka Kinen, and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Of his 11 top-tier winners, G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and G1 Yasuda Kinen hero Just A Way (Jpn) also traveled to the deserts of Dubai, and left with a victory in the G1 Dubai Duty Free.

Stateside, his son Yoshida (Jpn) is one of two stakes winners from just four to race. An ¥94,000,000 (£578,299/€653,571/ $696,836) purchase out of the JRHA Select Yearling Sale, the young sire won the GI Woodward S. on dirt and the GI Turf Classic S. on turf. Currently a resident of WinStar Farm, his first 2-year-olds run this year.

Added Yoshida after Heart's Cry was pensioned in 2020, “After retiring as a stallion, he spent his time comfortably on the pasture. I wanted you to enjoy this comfortable life for a longer time, and I wanted you to live forever, but I am sorry that it was a sudden parting. I hope you rest in peace.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all the people involved in his life, the fans who supported us, and the breeders who chose us as our compounding partners. Thank you very much for your help so far. Thank you.”

As a broodmare sire, Heart's Cry is responsible for seven stakes winners anchored by Japanese Horse of the Year Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) and G1 Blue Diamond S. winner Tagaloa (Aus) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}).

Regular rider Christophe Lemaire tweeted, “Very sad to hear [of] the passing of my champ. It all started with him for me in Japan. Big thoughts to Teruya Yoshida and Shadai Farm staff. Legends never die.”

Out of the dual Japanese stakes winner Irish Dance, Heart's Cry was the best foal of his dam. A half-sister by El Condor Pasa produced G3 Fairy S. heroine Omega Heart Rock (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}). Eclipse Champion Sprinter My Juliet (Gallant Romeo) is under the third dam, as is four-time Grade I winner Stella Madrid (Alydar), GI Ashland S. winner Lilacs And Lace (Flower Alley) and GI Shuvee H. scorer Tis Juliet (Alydar) while his extended family features G1 February S. hero Nonkono Yume (Jpn) (Twining), G1 Irish Oaks victress Winona (Ire) (Alzao), and dual Grade I winner Super Quercus (Fr) (Hero's Honor).

Moyglare Matings Include Baaeed Debut for Search For A Song

Following news that last season's Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Homeless Songs (Ire) is working up to an early seasonal debut, her owner-breeder Moyglare Stud has released the farm's mating plans for 2023, with her dam Joailliere (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) set for a return visit to Frankel (GB), the sire of her illustrious daughter. The 10-year-mare, herself a Listed winner, produced a filly foal from the first crop of St Mark's Basilica (Fr) on February 17.

She is not the only one of the Moyglare matriarchs to be heading to Juddmonte's Banstead Manor Stud. The Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Sonaiyla (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) delivered a Frankel colt last week and she will pay him a return visit, while the winning Galileo (Ire) mares Espoir d'Soleil (Ire) and Federica Sophia (Ire) are both bound for Kingman (GB). The former produced a Starspangledbanner (Aus) colt in February.

In many ways, Polished Gem (Ire) (Danehill) and her offspring have become Moyglare's signature family in recent years, and three of the celebrated mare's daughters are among the 39-strong broodmare band in Ireland, along with a number of grand-daughters. Amma Grace (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a stakes-winning full-sister to the Group 1 winners Search For A Song (Ire) and Kyprios (Ire), is set to visit Wootton Bassett, while the recently retired Search For A Song is booked to Baaeed (GB) in his first season. Their half-sister, the Group 2 winner Sapphire (Ire) (Medicean {GB}), dam of the aforementioned Federica Sophia, is currently in foal to Palace Pier (GB) with her 2023 mating to be confirmed. Two more of Sapphire's daughters reside in the broodmare band: Acqua Di Gioia (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will be among the first group of mares sent to Coolmore freshman Blackbeard (Ire). She foaled a filly by Space Blues (Ire) on February 21. Her half-sister, the Group 2-placed dual winner Kiss For A Jewel (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), is also Coolmore-bound and will be bred to St Mark's Basilica, having foaled a colt by Dark Angel this season.

 Blackbeard's sire No Nay Never is also being supported with the dual Group 3 winner Making Light (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) from the family of Irresistible Jewel (Ire), whose Group 3-winning daughter Mad About You (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) is heading to Sioux Nation. In turn, Mad About You's stakes-placed daughter, A Ma Chere (Ire) (Kodiac {GB), will visit Dark Angel.

All Our Tomorrows (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Liber Nauticus (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}), two mares who joined Moyglare from the dispersal of the stock of Ballymacoll Stud, will be covered by Dubawi (Ire) and Siyouni (Fr) respectively this season. All Our Tomorrows, a grand-daughter of Hellenic (GB), already has a yearling filly by Dubawi and lost her foal this year, while Liber Nauticus was not covered last year but has a yearling daughter by Sea The Stars (Ire).

In his second season at Dalham Hall Stud, Palace Pier will be sent the Moyglare duo of Lilli Milena (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and her dam Terrific (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the latter a sister to the Group 1 winners Jan Vermeer (Ire) and Together (Ire).

Another dual Group 3 winner, Carla Bianca (Ire) (Dansili {GB}), is currently in foal to Sea The Stars (Ire) and heading to Lope De Vega (Ire), while her Listed-placed daughter by Dubawi, Emilie Gray (Ire), has a date with Saxon Warrior (Jpn). The Deep Impact (Jpn) theme continues in the mating of the Listed-placed Titanium Sky (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who is booked for a visit to Lanwades for Study Of Man (Ire).

Florence Camille (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a winning full-sister to the Cheshire Oaks winner Thoughts Of June (Ire), will visit Derrinstown's newcomer Minzaal (Ire) after she delivers her foal by Starspangledbanner, and Rose De Pierre (Ire), a dual Listed-winning daughter of Dubawi and the Irish St Leger runner-up Profound Beauty (Ire), is in foal to Camelot (GB) and will be covered by Sea The Stars.

The unbeaten Tocco d'Amore (Ire) (Raven's Pass), who hails from the Kilcarn Stud family of Flame Of Tara (GB), was covered last year by Caravaggio in the States, where she also has a yearling colt by Uncle Mo, and she heads to New Bay (GB).

Grade I Stars Head American Team

Moyglare Stud has nine mares in Kentucky led by Celestine (Scat Daddy), who won the G1 Just A Game S. among her three graded stakes victories, and Switch (Quiet American), victrix of the G1 Santa Monica S. and GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita. Celestine foaled a Curlin filly on February 24 and will be covered next by Gun Runner, while Switch has an Uncle Mo colt at foot and is booked to Not This Time.

Each of Coolmore's Triple Crown winners, American Pharoah and Justify, has a brace of Moyglare mares heading their way: Grade III-placed My Arch Enemy (Arch) and Listed winner Lia Marina (Uncle Mo) for the former and Sola Luna (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Gioia Stella (Medaglia d'Oro) for the latter. Another daughter of Arch, the GIII La Prevoyante S. winner Beautiful Lover, is booked to Uncle Mo.

His nine unraced rivals include Alain and Gerard Wertheimer's homebred Double Major (Ire) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), who is a gelded half-brother to G3 Prix de Guiche winner Flop Shot (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) out of a stakes-placed half-sister to G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud victrix Plumania (GB) (Anabaa), from the Christophe Ferland yard.

Haggas Quartet Primed For Aussie Targets

Four horses trained by William Haggas are in good form in advance of planned starts in Australia in the coming weeks.

Competing on Saturday are Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stables colourbearer Purplepay (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), who will run in the 1500-metre G1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill Gardens.

“They're lovely people and this filly came to us by accident really,” said Haggas, who has already saddled three-time Australian Group 1 winner Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) Down Under. “She was bought to go to the States and then missed her flight and didn't go to the States, so they sent her to us, which is terrific.”

Joining the G2 Prix de Sandringham heroine who was also third in the G1 Criterium Internationa is Protagonist (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who will compete in the G3 Sky High S. over 2000 metres for Australian Bloodstock.

Haggas added, “Protagonist was bought privately by Australian Bloodstock after they sent us Earl Of Tyrone (Ire) (Australia {GB}). He was previously owned by Michael Buckley, owner of Constitution Hill (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}).

Earl Of Tyrone is bound for the Mar. 25 G1 Tancred S. or the Apr. 8 G1 Sydney Cup. Rounding out the quartet is Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) for Mohamed Obaida, who is being aimed at the G1 Ranvet S. at Rosehill on Mar. 18.

Haggas added, “We got very lucky. They all had a good trip and seem in good form. The one thing that I was concerned about was the weather and I've been right so far in that all the horses we sent want a bit of cut in the ground. It's been a very hot spell so far and the ground is quick. There's nothing I can do about the weather.

“The plan is to run Dubai Honour next week at Rosehill in the Ranvet S. and Earl of Tyrone will either go for the Tancred S. on the 25th Mar. or straight for the Sydney Cup on the 8th Apr.”
