Son Of Cracksman A New TDN Rising Star

With the prospect of the initial progeny of Cracksman (GB) encountering middle-distances and testing ground in their second seasons, the signs were strong that the Dalham Hall resident would come to the fore and Thursday's early Spring meeting at Saint-Cloud proved early confirmation as the newcomer Silver Crack (Fr) stormed to TDN Rising Star status. Anchored behind the early leaders by Cristian Demuro, the well-supported 9-10 favourite for the 10-furlong Prix Suave Dancer for 3-year-old colts and geldings moved to the front well in hand with 300 metres remaining before beginning his victory lap. Clear when eased late, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Grand Prix de Paris entry who races for Claudio and Edoardo Marzocco and Free Man Racing hit the line with seven lengths to spare over Juddmonte's Broadfield (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}), who was in turn a neck ahead of Barbate (GB) (Frankel {GB}).

Bruno Barbereau, racing manager for Claudio Marzocco, was not surprised by this eye-catching debut. “This is a horse that Jean-Claude liked very much last year and he was working with his best two-year-olds in the summer,” he explained. “He was supposed to have his first start at Deauville in the Prix de Crèvecoeur [eventually won by Rouget's leading Classic hope Rajapour], but he was lame a few days before with a minor problem and he couldn't make it to the races at two. Hopefully he will make up for lost time this year.”

Bought for €120,000 at the Arqana Deauville October Yearling Sale, the winner is out of the Car Colston Hall Stud-bred Silver Bark (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) who is a full-sister to the GI American Oaks Invitational and GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup-winning luminary Ticker Tape (GB). Responsible for the listed-placed Toofi (Fr) (Henrythenavigator) and Silver Meadow (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), she is also the second dam of the Listed Burradon S. runner-up Legion Of Honour (GB) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who went on to race in Hong Kong as Fly On Earth.

The second dam Argent Du Bois (Silver Hawk) also produced the high-class G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest-winning sprinter Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), while Ticker Tape's daughter Royal Decree (Street Cry {Ire}) was in turn responsible for the G2 Vintage S.-winning sire War Decree (War Front) and the GII Sands Point S. scorer Skims (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Another stakes performer out of Argent Du Bois was Sant Elena (GB) (Efisio {GB}), who is the dam of the G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. winner Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac winner Erasmo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the group-placed Best Approach (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). Another descendant of Argent Du Bois is the G3 Sweet Solera S. scorer West End Girl (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), while the family also features the G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and last year's G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains third Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}). Having provided the sire with his first TDN Rising Star, Silver Bark's 2-year-old filly Coeur d'Argent (Fr) is by his studmate Masar (Ire).

First Winner For Magna Grecia At Saint-Cloud

Coolmore's first-season sire Magna Grecia (Ire) (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) proved an instant hit in 2023 as his first runner Myconian (Ire) captured Saint-Cloud's 4 1/2-furlong Prix du Debut on Thursday. Always prominent under Mickael Barzalona, the Amy Murphy-trained son of the Listed Tipperary S. winner and G3 Curragh S. third Sirici (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) who traded as the 19-5 favourite outbattled The Fixer (Ire) (No Nay Never) inside the final 50 metres for a gutsy 3/4-of-a-length success.

The dam hails from the family of the dual listed-winning sprinter Dazed And Amazed (GB) (Averti {Ire}) and the ultra-fast Bishops Court (GB) whose impressive career tally included the G3 Prix du Petit Couvert. Sirici's yearling colt is by Circus Maximus (Ire). Video, sponsored by TVG.

Godolphin Draft Dominates Tattersalls Ascot March Sale

One-time starter Isle Of Jura (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) (lot 64) brought £150,000 from JS Bloodstock and George Scott Racing to top the Tattersalls Ascot March Sale on Wednesday.

The top 14 lots were all part of the Godolphin draft, with Isle Of Jura one of five to break the six-figure barrier. A full-brother to multiple Australian Group 1 winner Cascadian (GB), as well as a half to GI Summer S. hero Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the 3-year-old gelding ran fifth in his only start at Wolverhampton in November. His price marks the most expensive horse-in-training sold at the venue.

Billy Jackson-Stops said of the relative of Classic runner-up Master Of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), “He has been bought for an owner who already has horses with George. He is a big, raw horse with loads of promise. He was green on his first run and he needs some time but he will get that–let's hope he is as good as we want him to be. The mare has been amazing, all her runners have been rated 95+ and she has produced two Group 1 winners.”

Trainer Ian Williams signed for lots 100 and 103, a duo of Dubawi (Ire) geldings in Parlando (GB) and Yantarni (GB), who made £105,000 and £100,000, respectively. The former, out of G3 Sweet Solera S. heroine Discourse (Street Cry {Ire}), has won on turf, and was placed on the all-weather from two runs. Rated 87, he is a full-brother to two stakes winners led by G3 Jebel Ali Mile hero Blown By Wind (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Bearing more experience, Yantarni is a winner from six runs, with four placed efforts and is rated 89. A full to Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Vancouverite (GB), the 4-year-old is also a half-brother to dual Dubaian group winner Khawlah (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), now best known as the dam of G1 Derby victor Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}).

Overseeing G2 Dubai Gold Cup entrant Enemy (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) in Dubai, Williams, who was the sale's leading buyer after signing for an octet, said via What's App, “The eight have all been bought on spec–you can't win if you are not in and the first place you need to win is in the sale ring.

“They are all horses who I think will progress–they are nicely bred, have good form and are horses who can go on this summer in Europe and will then suit the Middle East next winter. I inspected the draft at Godolphin, they have been vetted and my assistant Angus Adams was at Ascot overseeing proceedings.”

Rounding out the top four was lot 105, the Sea The Moon (Ger) gelding Mond (Ger). Jamie Osborne signed the ticket on behalf of Pardus Wealth Stud for £105,000 for the son of Maricel (Ger) (Silvano {Ger}). A winner at Deauville on the all-weather, the 5-year-old gelding ran fifth in both the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange and in the Listed Prix Nureyev last year.

“He has a fair amount of ability and has been bought for Greg and Lauren Bryce, who have horses with me and are keen to collect some horses who could potentially go to some nice meetings in Europe and run internationally,” said Osborne.

“Hopefully, we can get him right and have some fun. We had vettings done in the week; this horse was our number one pick and we are delighted to get him.”

TJ Kent shelled out £100,000 for lot 104, the winner Cosmic Desert (GB) (New Approach {Ire}). The first foal out of listed winner Blossomtime (GB) (Shamardal), the bay gelding is from the same clan as Group 1 winner Danceteria (Fr) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) and is rated 91.

At the close of trade, the gross more than doubled to £1,661,100. The average rose 71% to £17,485, and the median increased 140% to £6,500. The clearance rate also rose by 6% to a sparkling 90% for 95 sold from 106 offered.

Matt Prior, Tattersalls Head of Sales, said, “Our thanks must go to Godolphin for sending such a superb draft of horses to the Tattersalls Ascot March Sale. All horses looked in great order and were a credit to the team; we are delighted that owners and trainers responded so well to the opportunity.”

Multiple Group 1 Winner Artorius Targets Platinum Jubilee Before Stud Duty

Multiple Group 1 winner Artorius (Aus) (Flying Artie {Aus}) is pointing to the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot in June, trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman announced on Wednesday.

“Following another fantastic performance in the G1 George Ryder S., Artorius has run his last race in Australia,” the Freedmans said in a statement. “However, he will head back to Royal Ascot to contest the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. on Saturday, June 24 before returning to Australia to retire at Newgate Stud.

“We are proud of his return to Australia following last year's European campaign to win his second Group 1 in the Canterbury S. at Royal Randwick. He is now in the paddock enjoying a short break before we begin the preparation towards Royal Ascot.

“We would like to thank and congratulate all the people behind the scenes in the stable as well as all his owners on Artorius's career to date. We are sure he will do us all proud again.”

A winner of the G1 Blue Diamond S. at two, the 4-year-old placed in both the 2022 Platinum Jubilee and G1 July Cup S. during his first Northern Hemisphere sojourn. His latest campaign has been a productive one, as he claimed the Canterbury S. by a head in early March, and then was a close fourth behind Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss) in the G1 George Ryder S. at Rosehill on Mar. 18.
