Frankel’s Hans Andersen Back On Top

Just a notch below the top at two, TDN Rising Star Hans Andersen (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Shadow Hunter {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}) enjoyed the ideal confidence boost on his return in a depleted renewal of Leopardstown's G3 Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2,000 Guineas Trial S. on Sunday. Second in the G2 Futurity S. at The Curragh in August and fifth in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. back at that venue when last seen the following month, the 8-13 favourite was held up early by Ryan Moore as fellow Ballydoyle runner Carracci (Quality Road) supplied the pace. Sent forward early in the straight, the Westerberg colour-bearer took over a furlong out and stayed on strongly to score by 2 1/2 lengths from Bold Discovery (Bolt D'Oro), with Caracci three lengths back in third.

“Seven was plenty short enough for him last year and although we always felt he'd be happy at a mile we had others to slot in to those races so kept him too short,” Aidan O'Brien explained after welcoming his ninth winner of this prep. “It was my fault–he should have gone up to a mile and we think he'll get further than a mile this year. The plan is the French or Irish Guineas and maybe a French Derby.”

Hans Andersen, who earned his TDN Rising Star tag when beating the subsequent National S. winner Al Riffa (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) at The Curragh in July, is the second foal out of the Listed Roses S. scorer and G3 Cornwallis S.-placed Shadow Hunter. She is a granddaughter of Cliveden Stud's stakes-placed Enemy Action (Forty Niner), a half-sister to the G2 Champagne S. and G2 Richmond S.-winning sire Daggers Drawn (Diesis {GB}) who produced the G3 Fred Darling S. runner-up and G1 1000 Guineas third Super Sleuth (Ire) (Selkirk). Also from the family of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Indian Haven (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), the G1 Gran Criterium scorer Count Dubois (GB) (Zafonic) and the G1 St Leger runner-up Kite Wood (Ire) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire), Shadow Hunter has a 2-year-old full-brother to Hans Andersen named Alonzo (GB).

TDN Rising Star Tag For Iquitos Rarity

Mulheim was grey and damp on Sunday, but it nevertheless witnessed a sparkling display in the card's opener as Wanja Soren Oberhof und Sebastian Weiss's 3-year-old colt Mr Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}–Margie's Music {Fr}, by Hurricane Run {Ire}) issued a 16-length beating to his peers on debut to become the latest German TDN Rising Star. With his triple group 1-winning Gestut Graditz-based sire having just five members of his initial crop, the Henk Grewe-trained half-brother to last year's G3 Derby-Trial runner-up Magical Beat (Ger) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was flying the flag as he bid to make it two winners from two starters for the son of Adlerflug (Ger). Placed towards the fore by Leon Wolff after the flag start to the 10-furlong Pferdewetten.de Auftaktrennen, the 5-2 second favourite took command turning for home and set sail in the testing conditions to open up his sizeable margin before being eased near the post.

“We were quite enthusiastic about him and I had the ideal position behind the leader with him always going well,” his rider said of the sire's first foal to be born. Grewe was keeping his feet on the ground as he added, “The going surely helped him and my horses are already very fit. We will soon see how good he really is, for the moment we will stay calm and just wait and see.”

The winner is the second foal out of the dam, who was listed-placed in the famed Gestut Ammerland silks and who also has a 2-year-old filly by Waldgeist (GB) named Moosbeere (Ger). The second dam Margie's World (Ger) (Spinning World) was also listed-placed and is kin to the G2 Gerling-Preis-placed Margosto (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), while the fourth dam Our Little Margie (Mr. Majestic) was second in the GI Spinaway S.

BHA Chief Executive Julie Harrington Issues Statement Following Tragic Week

Following a difficult week for racing which saw four pass away–including Jess Whalley, who collapsed and died on scene at Michael Owen's Manor House Stable Tuesday morning, BHA's Chief Executive Julie Harrington issued the following statement on Saturday:

“This has been a tragic week for all of us in the racing community.

“Jess Whalley was a shining example of what makes British racing so special. She dedicated herself to providing outstanding care to horses and it was while doing this that her life was suddenly and tragically cut short. On behalf of all of us at the BHA, I extend my sympathies to all who knew and loved Jess.

“Likewise we offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mazar Allauddin following his death on Wednesday. A superb horseman who also exemplified the values of British racing, Mazar had quickly established himself as a key part of the Robert Cowell team and his loss will be keenly felt.

“Both of these incidents are unspeakably tragic and there are no words to adequately describe the grief of losing a friend, colleague and loved one in such circumstances. The BHA along with colleagues at Racing Welfare, NARS and the IJF, have been working to provide support for staff affected by what took place at each yard.

“We also mourn the recent passing of John Spearing, who died peacefully at the age of 82 and Dave Morris, who left us following a long illness, aged 74. Our thoughts are with John and Dave's families and friends at this sad time.”

Jockeys at all British tracks will wear black armbands this weekend in tribute to Jess, Mazar, John and Dave.
