Cold Case Solves Commonwealth Cup Trial Riddle At Ascot

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's 3-year-old colt Cold Case (GB) (Showcasing {GB}–Killermont Street {Ire}, by Dream Ahead) closed his six-race juvenile campaign with victories in Doncaster's £300,000 Weatherbys 2-Year-Old S. and Redcar's Listed Two-Year-Old Trophy and came back off a 214-day break to register a game success in Wednesday's G3 British Racing School 40th Anniversary Commonwealth Cup Trial S. at Ascot. The 5-1 chance was in the squat position as the gates flew open and recovered to race on the front end after the initial strides. Scrubbed along when headed by G2 Coventry S.-winning 'TDN Rising Star' Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) approaching the quarter-mile marker, he rallied gamely under a drive to subdue that rival inside the final 100 yards and claimed an ultimately comfortable 1 1/2-length tally from 125-1 outsider The X O (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who nailed Bradsell by a short-head on the line for second.

“I thought, as he hadn't run for a while, he might need it, but he picked up really well,” said winning rider Clifford Lee. “He's a good galloper, he's very consistent and he has a bit of boot as well. I will be more confident wherever he goes next time.”

Pedigree Notes
Cold Case, full to a yearling colt, is the second of three foals and lone scorer produced by a multiple-winning half-sister to G3 Cornwallis S. victrix Ponty Acclaim (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}). The January-foaled bay shares his second dam Leopard Creek (GB) (Weldnaas) with MGSP Listed Prix Francois Mathet winner Talk Or Listen (Ire) and three-time stakes placegetter Roussel (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). His second dam Leopard Creek (GB) (Weldnaas) is a full-sister to MGSP three-time stakes winner Astonished (GB) and a half to G3 Prix du Petit Couvert victor Bishops Court (GB) (Clantime {GB}).

A 31st TDN Rising Star For Kingman

Ascot's Naas Racecourse Royal Ascot Trials Day British EBF Fillies' S. offers the G1 Coronation S. hopefuls a chance to get acquainted with the track and Normandie Stud's Queen For You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}–Fallen For You {GB}, by Dansili {GB}) could be one for that contest after earning TDN Rising Star status on Wednesday. Debuting in the mile encounter, the John and Thady Gosden-trained daughter of the 2012 Coronation heroine whose half-siblings include the multiple group winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and who is a full-sister to the listed scorer Love Is You (Ire) recovered from a tardy start to find cover behind the leaders in fifth after the initial stages.

Looming large on the stands' side at the quarter-mile marker, the 4-1 chance quickened smartly to lead approaching the final furlong and was ridden out by Robert Havlin in the closing stages to account for Copy Artist (GB) (No Nay Never) by two lengths. “This filly is still raw, but she has talent,” the rider said. “She quickened up well, she'll have learnt plenty and she can only come forward for the run.” Thady Gosden added, “She'd been going nicely at home and her mother won the Coronation Stakes, while Kingman was a champion miler. So yes, we would take a look at the Coronation Stakes. It's five weeks away, but another run would benefit her.”

Queen For You, amazingly the 31st TDN Rising Star for her sire, whose best in that category so far are Persian King (Ire) and Palace Pier (GB), is the sixth of eight foals and fourth scorer produced by Fallen For You, whose progeny include the multiple group winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Kingman's Listed Radley S. scorer and G3 Nell Gwyn S. third Love Is You (Ire). A daughter of the Listed Silver Trophy scorer and multiple group-placed Fallen Star (GB) (Brief Truce), she is kin to the Listed Heron S. winner Fallen Idol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and to the G2 Lancashire Oaks runner-up Fallen In Love (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).

Fallen In Love was in turn responsible for Kingman's Serve The King (GB), who took the GII Red Smith S. and was second in the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, and also for the G3 Prix de Flore scorer Loving Things (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) who was third in the Lancashire Oaks. Also connected to the G1 Lockinge S.-winning sire Fly To The Stars (GB) (Bluebird) and the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen winner Peace At Last (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Fallen For You's 2-year-old filly Fight For You (Ire) is by Saxon Warrior (Jpn) while she also has a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire).

GP von Baden Doubles in Value to €400,000

The 153rd Grosser Preis von Baden, which has doubled in value to €400,000 for 2023, has drawn 46 entries at its early closing stage, including 10 from Godolphin and seven trained by Joseph O'Brien.

On the home front, defending champion Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) takes top billing for trainer Sarah Steinberg, and his compatriots with entries include last year's Deutsches Derby winner Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Tunnes (Ger) (Giuliani {Ger}), the half-brother to 2021 Grosser Preis von Baden and Arc winner Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}).

Last year's G1 Preis von Europa winner Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who went on from Germany to land the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, heads the Godolphin list, with former Breeders' Cup Turf winner Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) also entered.

Stephan Buchner, Managing Partner of Baden Galopp said, “We are already looking forward to September 3, when the 153rd Grosser Preis von Baden, one of the sporting highlights in European horse racing, will be held. Of course, we are a bit disappointed with the number of nominations but, as always, the accounts are only settled at the end. Maybe there will be one or two late entries.”

The Grosser Preis von Baden is the feature race of five days of racing at Baden-Baden throughout the week of August 26 to September 3, with five further days of action scheduled at the Iffezheim track during 2023 from May 18.
