Siyouni Colt Another TDN Rising Star At Naas

There was a strong vibe about Ballydoyle's Johannes Brahms (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Illaunmore, by Shamardal) ahead of Saturday's six-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race at Naas and he did not disappoint to show distinct promise and earn TDN Rising Star status. Jumping smartly under Seamie Heffernan to race on the front end, the 5-6 favourite was kept company by the Ger Lyons-trained fellow newcomer Tourist (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) and was briefly headed inside the two. Battling against the rail, the 200,000gns Book 1 purchase who races for Coolmore, Westerberg and Brant eked out a half-length success.

“I'd say they are two nice colts and I'd like to own either,” the winning rider said. “He was sleepy and green going to the start, is quick and is going to get quicker. When they are strong like this they can go to Ascot.” Stable representative Chris Armstrong added of the bay, whose sire's eight TDN Rising Stars include the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Tahiyra (Ire), “He's a smashing colt, he's got plenty of size about him and has a lot of class and speed. He showed a bit of greenness throughout, at home they haven't been off the bridle, and they penny hasn't dropped with this fella yet.”

“There is a lot to like about him,” Armstrong continued. “Seamus thought he had plenty of gears for a horse his size and he cruises very well. We'll try and get one more run into him before Ascot and he's one to look forward to. We thought that trip might have been his minimum but Seamus said he's versatile, five or six and he can go up further. From the three home he was never really travelling, he was a bit lost, but once Seamus got him gathered up he found the line well and kept stretching out. Once the penny drops, he should be lovely at any trip.”

Hall-of-Famers and Returning Heroes

NEWMARKET, UK–With a line-up that included Hurricane Lane (Ire), Global Storm (Ire) and West Wind Blows (Ire), the G2 Jockey Club S. was ushered in, appropriately, with a deep rumble of thunder and crack of lightning. The threatened storm didn't amount to much, and by the time Hurricane Lane had blasted away from his rivals to cinch an important comeback victory by six lengths, the sky was brightening as much as the mood of Charlie Appleby.

The trainer was visibly relieved to have his 2021 dual Classic winner back in the top spot, perhaps even more so after his stable-mate  Native Trail (GB) hadn't quite sparkled earlier on in the G2 Bet365 Mile. 

“When you have a horse that has given us, and the team, what he has given us, of course you feel for them,” said Appleby. “You want them to do it and you want them to carry on. We will see if he is a Hardwicke horse in the summer, if the ground comes right. I always said I wanted to work back from an Arc. That might be a bit bold, but we will see.”

Appleby had already struck early in the opening race of the QIPCO Guineas Festival. Hopefully, the King and Queen Consort will have been so wrapped up in preparations for the coronation that they may not have noticed that the one horse to beat their highly promising colt Circle Of Fire (GB) was co-bred by their racing manager John Warren's Highclere Stud.

In fact, the Listed Newmarket S., provided a one-two for the Haras d'Etreham stallion Almanzor (Fr) when Godolphin's Castle Way (GB) led home the royal runner. The winner is a half-brother to the champion miler Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who is now ensconced at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud.

Ever the professional, Warren first addressed the matter of the staying-on run from the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Circle Of Fire in his post-race debrief, with a hint that he may head to Royal Ascot for the G2 King Edward VII S.

“He looks as of he will go up another gear if he goes over another couple of furlongs,” Warren said. “Ryan [Moore] thought that they went steady early on and probably thought that if they'd gone a bit quicker earlier on it would have suited him even better.

“It's annoying that [the abandonment of] Sandown has knocked us out timing-wise, so we'll have to get our heads around that, but without even talking to Michael yet he looks to me like he'll be a lovely horse for Ascot, and the owners will be able to attend, which will be nice.”

He added, “The most important thing is that he's with a trainer who will be able to get a proper handle on where we are going to pitch, but Ryan was impressed with him and there were some pretty nice horses in that race as a benchmark. He's out of a Galileo mare so it won't be a surprise if he will want a few furlongs more.”

Turning to Castle Way, the sixth foal of the Nayef mare Beach Frolic (GB) who was sold for 2.2 million gns in the year her current three-year-old colt was foaled, Warren was understandably similarly impressed. Castle Way himself, who was bred by Highclere in partnership with Floors Stud, was a 425,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling in the year that his illustrious half-sibling stormed to success in the G1 St James's Palace S. and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois.

He said, “That was tremendous. We were excited about that. He was a beautiful yearling and made a good price as a yearling. She's been a wonderful mare and the family has done us proud. I am pleased that Coolmore have the mother now, which is great.”

Warren also added that Highclere Stud is now home to three foals from the first crop of Palace Pier.

“I have to say we are really impressed,” he noted. “Of course it's too early to say that, you can't judge it by just a few, but the first three that we've seen we've been mightily impressed with. Palace Pier was such a a tremendous horse and his brother looks a proper horse, too. It's very exciting.”

The Highclere team was celebrating again later in the day when the George Boughey-trained Soprano (Ire) was tuned to perfection to post a pretty sparkling win on debut in the juvenile fillies' maiden.

Shouldvebeenaring (GB) became the third Stakes winner for Havana Grey (GB) this year, and as his owners in the Middleham Park Racing syndicate collected their trophy, the colt's breeder Ed Harper watched on. It could be a big weekend for the Whitsbury Manor Stud team as not only did they breed Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}), current third-favourite for the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas, but Havana Grey will be represented by his first Classic runner in Sunday's 1,000 Guineas when the G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner Mammas Girl (GB) returns to Newmarket. 

Harper admitted that Havana Grey had been inundated with applications with breeders this season.

“We've tried to keep him to around 160 mares,” he said. “I must say that [head of bloodstock] Joe Callan has done a really good job managing the horse.”

Harper also confirmed that Chaldean's dam, the multiple stakes producer Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), has recently been covered again by Frankel.

On Friday evening at the National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket, Sir Michael Stoute and Sea The Stars (Ire) were officially inducted into the QIPCO British Horseracing Hall of Fame. Their worthiness for such an honour could be in no doubt, but it was emphatically underlined when Stoute took the Nyetimber Fillies' Maiden with the eye-catching Infinite Cosmos (Ire), a daughter of Sea The Stars bred by the late Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, and whose Classic lines are as obvious in her elegant physique as on her page.

Appleby’s Flying Honours Pleases In Newmarket Gallop

Godolphin's Flying Honours (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) worked a mile under William Buick at Newmarket's Rowley Mile on Friday. The work was preparation for a start in the G1 Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs in June.

The 3-year-old colt worked in company with GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Natural World (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) prior to Friday's card. The G2 Dante S. at York on May 18 is next on the G3 Zetland S. hero's agenda.

Appleby said, “I'm delighted with that piece of work. At the end of the day, he has worked with no mug there in Yibir.

“We were intending to go to Sandown last week with Flying Honours, but that got rained off, and the plan now is that if he comes out of this piece of work well is to head to York for the Dante.

“He has got a lovely profile stepping up to this middle-distance category this year. The Dante is the race that if you go and win afterwards you will probably be second favourite for the Derby. At the end of the day it is one of the best trials.

“This horse will get a mile and a half no problem at all. He is a neat horse and he has got enough racing experience under him now to head to a track like Epsom.

“Until you have been around there you can never hand on heart say you handle it but I believe he has got enough race experience to go there and handle it fine.”

Another of Appleby's Epsom Classic contenders, Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), will target the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial S. at Lingfield on May 13. This is the same route as his Derby-winning brother Adayar (Ire) took prior to winning the Blue Riband.

Appleby said, “I was very pleased with what I saw from Military Order at Newbury. People will say it was a slow time but they weren't going to be setting records in those conditions.

“I just loved his demeanour and the way that he galloped out. He has come out of it very well and he is bred to win a Derby.

“He will now head to Lingfield and follow the trodden route of his brother Adayar, who won this race in 2021, and then we will work it out from there.”

Imperial Emperor (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been re-routed to either the G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot or the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh. The son of GI Man o'War S. heroine Zhukova (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) took his only start at Newmarket in October.

“I've just taken my time with Imperial Emperor,” Appleby continued. “He is very closely related to Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and in his 3-year-old career he met with a setback.

“It is always on my mind that he is a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half Dubawi and you just can't push them. People will say that I did it with Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) but that was different as he was a miler.

“Wholeheartedly, I would probably say I won't be getting there with him. I would rather bring him along and we might end up going to Royal Ascot or the Irish Derby with him.

“He is a horse that I have high regards for but one that we will look after along the way.”

TDN Rising Star Badge For Sea The Stars Filly

One of Newmarket's Spring talking horses, Oaks entry Infinite Cosmos (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Waila {GB}, by Notnowcato {GB}) duly opened her account with comfort in the 10-furlong Nyetimber Maiden Fillies' S. on QIPCO Guineas Friday to become her sire's 17th TDN Rising Star. Representing the longstanding Rothschild-Sir Michael Stoute connection, the relative of Sea The Stars' high-class Crystal Ocean (GB) had been second to the subsequent G3 Prix Penelope runner-up Sea Of Roses (GB) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in a Doncaster maiden in October and started as the 8-11 favourite with Ryan Moore engaged to give connections the lowdown.

Racing prominently, the homebred had the measure of long-time leader Therapist (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) passing two out and found her feet on the climb to the line to score by 4 1/4 lengths from Strong Impact (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}), who denied Therapist by a neck. Stoute was keeping a lid on things, despite some bookmakers promoting her to favourite for the Epsom Classic. “I didn't think she was impressive there, only workmanlike, but she is still learning on the job,” he said. “We'll run her in a trial and make a decision after that, but I don't think she's going to be sparkly at this stage of her career–she needs to grow up and is taking time to learn. She may be impervious to ground conditions.”

Infinite Cosmos has some big shoes to fill, with her sire's impressive TDN Rising Star haul including Crystal Ocean himself, as well as the star fillies Emily Upjohn (GB) and Star Catcher (GB) and the G1 Deutsches Derby-winning sire Sea The Moon (Ger). She is the fourth foal out of Waila, who was also under Ryan Moore when recording a career-best 10-length success in the 12-furlong Listed Aphrodite S. on the July Course here 10 years ago and who was third in the G3 Lillie Langtry S.

Waila, who was sold to BBA Ireland for 550,000gns at the most recent Tatts December Sale, also has a yearling full-sister to the winner who was also purchased at that auction for 400,000gns by McKeever Bloodstock for Ballyhimikin as part of Southcourt Stud's partial dispersal. She is a daughter of Crystal Cavern (Be My Guest), a half to the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Rose Gypsy (GB) (Green Desert) whose daughter Crystal Star (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) captured the Listed Radley S. and was second in the G3 Fred Darling S.

Before her death in 2015, Crystal Star proved a rich font of successful runners for Southcourt Stud, producing four black-type performers beginning with Crystal Capella (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) who captured two renewals of the G2 Pride S. as well as the G2 Princess Of Wales's S. and G3 Middleton S. Her next big-time personality was the GI Canadian International and G2 King Edward VII S. scorer Hillstar (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), before Crystal Ocean arrived on the scene with wins in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. and G2 Hardwicke S. and five other group races and five second placings at the highest level including two in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.
