Kuroshio’s Kairyu Notches Anglesey Triumph

Michael O'Callaghan trainee Kairyu (Ire) (Kuroshio {Aus}–Vegatina {GB}, by Lope De Vega {Ire}) was the clear-cut winner of a five-furlong Naas maiden last month and franked the promise of that debut score with an upset win upped in trip for Saturday's G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey S. at the Curragh.

Kairyu employed patient tactics from flagfall and lobbed along off the pace in sixth through the early fractions. Making smooth headway once past halfway, the 4-1 chance quickened beyond rivals to seize control approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to hold the late threat of 10-11 favourite Pearls And Rubies (No Nay Never) by 1 1/4 lengths.

“She looks very smart, Colin [Keane] said she doesn't want that [soft] ground and she was just good and tough,” said trainer Michael O'Callaghan. “The gaps appeared a little bit before Colin wanted them, but she has a savage turn of foot where she can go and put a race to bed. She relaxes so well that she'll probably get seven furlongs in time. I was thinking about going to the [G2] Duchess Of Cambridge at Newmarket last week, but I wasn't happy with her work so we waited another week. Colin thinks she'll be better on better ground and she'll probably go for something like the [G2] Lowther [at York] now. She's still a little bit high behind and she's going to grow plenty, so she could potentially be a very nice filly.”

Pedigree Notes
Kairyu becomes the fourth pattern-race winner for her sire (by Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and is the only reported foal produced by Vegatina (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Prix Isola Bella third Vassiana (Fr) (Anabaa). Vassiana is the dam of G3 Phoenix Sprint S. victrix Girouette (Ire) (Pivital {GB}), herself the second dam of G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never). Vassiana, who is also a full-sister to G3 Prix d'Arenberg winner Villadolide (Fr) and Listed Prix Hampton scorer Victorieux (Fr), is from the immediate family of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Mrs. Penny (Great Nephew {GB}).

Son Of Minding A New TDN Rising Star In Ireland

Aidan O'Brien had annexed six of the last 10 renewals of the Curragh's Juddmonte Irish EBF Maiden, among them 2013 winner Australia (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), and he claimed Saturday's latest edition with Henry Longfellow (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who collected a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette with a taking performance in the seven-furlong test.

The eventual winner was steadily away and raced in a close-up third initially and eased into second approaching halfway. Hitting the front soon after passing the quarter-mile marker, the well-backed 5-4 favourite was never seriously threatened thereafter and kept on powerfully under mild coaxing inside the final furlong to easily outpoint G2 Railway S. fifth Mythology (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by 1 3/4 lengths.

“He's an exciting type of horse and I'm delighted with him,” the winning trainer said. “He's a Dubawi out of Minding and he looks a lovely horse. Minding handled that [soft] ground and he does bend his knee a bit, but he quickens. Ryan [Moore] said it was very easy, he didn't touch him with the stick and was very happy with him. He had been working well and he just came on the scene lately. For the last three weeks, week after week, he was working well.”

Henry Longfellow is the second of four foals and first runner produced by seven-time Group 1 heroine Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), herself a full-sister to G1 Oaks and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victrix Tuesday (Ire), G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Empress Josephine (Ire) and G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Kissed By Angels (Ire). The January-foaled bay is full to a yearling filly and half to a weanling filly by Wootton Bassett (GB). Minding, herself a daughter of G1 Coronation S. and G1 Matron S. winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), was bred to Gun Runner this year.

Apprentice Jockey Handed 10-Day Ban For Debut Killarney Ride

Apprentice jockey Iqbal Khan was suspended for 10 days by the Killarney stewards on Wednesday for using his whip with excessive frequency and without giving his mount time to respond on his first ride in public.

Khan finished second aboard Lucky Queen for trainer Pat Murphy in the first division of the mile handicap and the ride was widely shared on social media shortly afterwards.

In the final furlong alone, the rider struck Lucky Queen 13 times, including a couple of double strikes.

This caught the attention of the stewards, who dished out a 10-day ban, which prompted an apology from Khan.

The IHRB report said, “Evidence was heard from the rider concerned, who accepted he was in breach and apologised for his actions.

“Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the stewards were of the opinion that the rider was in breach of R.10.3(g) (frequency) and R.10.3(i) (time to respond) and considering his record in this regard they suspended him for ten days.”

‘A Group Horse In A Handicap’ – McGuinness Upbeat On Galway Big Guns

Ado McGuinness has described the Galway Festival as a place for the ordinary man to make a name for himself and revealed that he will be aiming up to 20 horses at this year's seven-day bonanza, headed by the remarkable Current Option (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).

Bidding for a fourth successive triumph in the “Ahonoora” Handicap next month, Current Option will be joined by Galway regulars Saltonstall (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), Sirjack Thomas (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) and Casanova (GB) (Frankel {GB}), all of whom were seen stretching their legs on the Rush Beach near the trainer's County Dublin base on Thursday morning.

Speaking at the launch for the summer highlight, McGuinness said, “When I started off, I was a small, ordinary fella, and it was very hard to get yourself going at a big track like Cheltenham or places like that. I actually won an Imperial Cup at Sandown and never got another horse out of it.

“Galway is a place where an ordinary fella can get results. You can have a nice, well-handicapped horse who can do very well at Galway. An ordinary fella can make a name for himself at Galway.”

He added, “The amount of recognition you get when you have a winner during race week at Galway is unbelievable, it's better than three or four winners at one of the ordinary country tracks. It's a place where you can make a name for yourself.

“There is no place like it to have a bit of fun and craic. A lot of our guys who are involved with horses, the Dooley brothers, Bart O'Sullivan, Jim Fairchild, James O'Sullivan, the Shamrock Thoroughbreds, they all love the place. The Dooley guys are bringing 24 or 25 over this year.  It is just spiraling for those guys.”

The red and black silks of Dooley Thoroughbreds, major supporters of the trainer, are expected to be once again in the spotlight at Galway next month with Current Option reported to be bang on target for the meeting by McGuinness.

He said, “Current Option really comes to himself from this time of the year onwards. He was third in the Sovereign Path last year and the two horses who beat him were two English horses.

“This is a Group 3 horse, and a Listed winner, that's running in a handicap. If you drop a Group 3 horse back into a handicap, he's usually the best horse in the race and usually when you have the best horse in the race they win. You very often find Group horses running in premier handicaps off top weight and they often win them.

“I'm privileged that I have horses like Current Option who can run in premier handicaps. Being a Group 3 or Listed winner, getting more black type, that makes no difference to me. I won a Listed race at Leopardstown last year and got 29 grand for it. I finished second in the big mile handicap at Galway last year and we got 26 thousand, so we target the money for these quality horses.”

Sirjack Thomas sprung a 50-1 surprise for McGuinness in the Galway Mile a couple of years ago and typifies the trainer's approach to these big-money handicaps.

He explained, “You can only win the Lotto with one ticket, but the more tickets you have, the better chance you have of winning. That's the way I look at it.”

On other runners to keep an eye on at Ballybrit, he added, “Casanova has probably been the unluckiest horse I've ever had in these premier handicaps. He was second in the Mile last year and second in the “Ahonoora”. He was placed in the Lincoln, placed in the Cambridgeshire, but he just can't seem to get his head in front.

“He'll go for the two races, the Mile on Tuesday and the “Ahonoora” on the Sunday. The Mile race would be his forte, but he was placed at Tipperary over seven and I'll drop him back to seven on the Sunday if the ground is slow.

“Sirjack Thomas is not going to get into the Mile but he will run in two handicaps there over the week. He's actually won twice down there and been placed twice. He loves it, so watch out for him wherever he shows up.”
