Dubawi’s Ancient Wisdom Wins The Futurity Trophy

After a 15-minute delay caused by Ballydoyle's Battle Cry (Ire) (No Nay Never) turning over in the stalls, Godolphin's Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Golden Valentine {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) proved the most effective on Doncaster's deep ground to justify 5-4 favouritism under William Buick in Saturday's G1 Kameko Futurity Trophy. Back in action a fortnight after winning Newmarket's G3 Autumn S., the Charlie Appleby trainee was left in front initially and looked beaten for a few strides as the pack closed in two out. Regaining momentum to ultimately outstay his rivals with his pounding stride, the TDN Rising Star who was the second-highest-priced lot at the 2022 Arqana Deauville August Sale had 1 3/4 lengths to spare over Devil's Point (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) at the line, with God's Window (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a head away in third.

Tattersalls Autumn HIT Sale Concludes With Strong Clearance Rate

After a busy five days of selling, the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale concluded at Park Paddocks in Newmarket on Friday.

Topping the final session was Veiled Illusion (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) (lot 1562), who sold for 55,000gns to Nawaf Abdullah Al-Saif. Consigned by James Tate's Jamesfield Stables, the Lingfield winner is bound for Saudi Arabia.

“He is in good form, and will ship soon to Saudi,” said Al-Saif. “I think he will like the better weather in the Middle East and should be one to go on both the turf and dirt surfaces at the King Abdulaziz racecourse.”

One day longer than 2022's edition, the sale's Friday session resulted in 88 lots sold from 162 offered (81%). The aggregate was 1,076,859gns. The average was 8,158gns and the median was 4,500gns.

Overall, despite the larger catalogue, the clearance rate remained high at 87% dropping only three points from the record-breaking 2022 sale. The gross for the 1,089 lots that found new homes was 33,705,774gns. Both the average and median were down, with the average settling at 30,951gns (-14%) and the median was 15,000gns (-6%) compared to last term.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Sale turnover second only to last year's wide-margin record is a very solid performance from the 2023 renewal of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale. As ever this unique fixture, the largest and most popular of its type in the world, has attracted an extraordinarily diverse collection of buyers from all corners of the world and this has been reflected in figures which yet again demonstrate the enduring appeal of British and Irish horses in training as well as quality stock from France and Germany.

“Similar to so many Tattersalls sales the Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale has made relentless progress in the past decade. Only 10 years ago the sale recorded turnover a little over 20 million guineas, an average price of 23,000 guineas and eight lots selling for 200,000 guineas or more. This year's sale has achieved turnover of almost 34 million guineas, an average price well over 30,000 guineas and 28 lots have sold for 200,000 guineas or more which is only one fewer than at last year's record-breaking sale.

“The sustained and widespread demand from throughout the Gulf region has yet again played an enormous part in the success of the sale as racing in that part of the world continues to grow and flourish, but equally significant has been the impact of a particularly strong contingent of Australian buyers whose presence has been felt in all sectors of the market, but most notably at the very top. Ten of the top 20 highest priced horses sold this week and nearly 50 horses in total are heading down to Australia which is a tribute to the top level success of recent graduates of the sale like Just Fine (Ire) and Zaaki (GB). Similarly success driven, although largely at a different level of the market has been the notable contribution from the numerous European buyers in particular Spanish and Italian buyers who have been busy from start to finish and have also accounted for more than 80 horses between them this week. We work hard alongside our extensive network of overseas representatives to promote this and every other Tattersalls sale and it is rewarding to see this reflected in the unrivalled overseas participation which is the hallmark of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale.

“Alongside international buyers from more than 30 different countries the domestic British and Irish influence has also been felt in all sectors of the market this week with Flat and National Hunt buyers all making a significant contribution and we look forward to seeing equally diverse international and domestic demand at the forthcoming Tattersalls December Foals and Mares Sale which annually provides a showcase for the very best European bloodstock.”

King Of Steel Will Travel To The Breeders’ Cup With the Turf The Likeliest Target

Amo Racing's G1 Champion S. victor King Of Steel (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has been given the go ahead to travel and contest the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita next weekend.

According to Amo's Kia Joorabchian, the massive grey is likely for the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, of which the Champion S. was a “Win and You're In” on QIPCO British Champions Day.

“We've been monitoring him all week, I've spoken to Roger [Varian] almost every day and I went to see him this week,” Joorabchian told Nick Luck's Daily Podcast on Friday.

“To be honest Roger has said the same thing every day, he can't fault him and he's in great shape. He's come out of the race really well.

“Roger would always err on the side of caution, but he's very happy with him so he's going to travel today to Santa Anita so fingers crossed he should be running in, I'd say, most probably the Turf, but we haven't completely ruled anything out yet.”

The Varian trainee caused a stir when a game second in the G1 Derby behind fellow Turf aspirant Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) earlier this year, and he went on to prevail at Royal Ascot in the G2 King Edward VII S. Later in the summer, the colt was third in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. prior to a fourth in the G1 Irish Champion S. in mid-September.

He added, “The reality is, Roger and his team probably feel much more comfortable on the turf, as a 3-year-old I think we would edge towards the Turf. He's never run on dirt and the only factor is if he gets out of the gates a little bit slower he'd get a lot of dirt in his face. That is edging us more towards the Turf.

“The jockey [Frankie Dettori] arrived there yesterday, he sent me a video of himself working out.”

Respiratory Infection Knocks Paddington Out Of Breeders’ Cup Mile; Retired To Coolmore For 2024

The high-class miler Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}–Modern Eagle {Ger}, by Montjeu {Ire}), bound for Santa Anita's GI Breeders' Cup Mile, has instead been retired directly to Coolmore Stud for the 2024 breeding season due to an elevated temperature and a respiratory infection, the stud announced on Friday. A fee for the Aidan O'Brien trainee will be revealed later.

Bred by Dayton Investments, Ltd., the four-time Group 1 winner won his second start as a juvenile, and then proceeded to take his first six races at three, including the top-level Irish 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace S., Eclipse S. and the Sussex S. He was also third in York's G1 International S. A €420,000 Arqana October yearling, Paddington's record stands at 10-7-0-1 and $2,219,337 in earnings.

“To do what he did takes a very special horse,” said his trainer Aidan O'Brien. “In terms of his attitude and determination he was very similar to Giant's Causeway but Paddington was a much quicker horse. He had great tactical speed but could quicken off it. He's an unbelievable specimen who stands over an incredible amount of ground. He got physically stronger and heavier from race to race which is a very unusual thing in a thoroughbred.”

A half-brother to the multiple stakes-placed Masterpiece (Fr) (Mastercraftman {Ire}), Paddington is the fourth and last reported foal of his dam, the Listed Prix Belle de Nuit heroine Modern Eagle. Herself a half-sister to Listed Vintage Tipple S. heroine and G3 Loughbrown S. third Mighty Blue (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}), Modern Eagle is out of the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Millionaia (Ire) (Peintre Celebre). Millionaia, in turn, is a half-sister to two black-type horses, anchored by G1 Dewhurst S. second Fencing Master (GB) (Oratorio {Ire}), while their dam is G1 Prix Saint-Alary heroine Moonlight Dance (Alysheba). This is also the family of G1 Melbourne Cup bridesmaid Heartbreak City (Fr) (Lando {Ger}). French champion and dual Classic winner Madelia (Fr) (Caro {Ire}) is Paddington's great great granddam.
