Classic Winner Kew Gardens Retired

Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}-Chelsea Rose {Ire}, by Desert King), winner of the 2018 G1 St Leger, has been retired from racing and will enter stud next year under Coolmore’s National Hunt banner.

Bred by Barronstown Stud and raced by the Coolmore partners, Kew Gardens indicated an affinity for middle distances with a win in the 2000 metre Listed Zetland S. at two. He earned a first pattern victory in the G2 Queen’s Vase S. at Royal Ascot before successfully dropping down to a mile and a half in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. He went back up in trip to best Lah Ti Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the St Leger. Back for a 4-year-old campaign last year, his season was marked by a trio of runner-up efforts before he bested Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) by a nose in the G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup.

Kew Gardens is out of the G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Chelsea Rose, who has also produced the French Group 3 winner and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest second Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}).

“Kew Gardens is a big, good-looking horse, clear winded and an excellent mover,” O’Brien said. “He has a super mind and is extremely brave. He was a top-class middle-distance horse.”

Golden Horde On Course For July Cup

Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) has exited his G1 Commonwealth Cup victory last week “really well” and is set to tackle elders in the G1 Darley July Cup on July 11, trainer Clive Cox said.

Golden Horde was emulating his young sire with a Royal Ascot Group 1 victory, Lethal Force having taken the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. in 2013 for Cox, and the 3-year-old will also attempt to follow his sire into the July Cup winner’s enclosure.

“He’s come out of it really well,” Cox said. “He took the race super. It was a great performance.

“It’s our intention to go for the July Cup and we’re very happy with him. That’s precisely where we’re heading, all being well.”

Military March Out Of Epsom Derby

Godolphin G3 Autumn S. winner and G1 2000 Guineas fourth Military March (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) has been ruled out of the July 4 G1 Investec Derby after suffering a setback, according to trainer Saeed bin Suroor. Military March was third favourite for the blue riband.

“He’ll be back by the end of the season, but his setback means no Derby,” the trainer said. “He’s a nice horse, we like him and he was doing really well so it’s really unfortunate. He’ll have a break now, but he should be back in October and we’ll look forward to that.

“It’s sad that he’s not running. He ran a good race in the Guineas and the Derby looked the perfect race for him; we’ve always felt he was a mile-and-a-quarter or mile-and-a-half horse, but he’s still one to look forward to in the future. It’s not serious, but he just needs time.

“He would have been my best chance in the Derby for a long time.”
