Tattersalls Releases Catalogues for October Books 2-4

The catalogues for Books 2, 3 and 4 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale were released on Tuesday, with a half-brother to 2019 G1 Investec Oaks heroine Star Catcher (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) (lot 965) one of the highlights. A total of 816 yearlings will go through the ring in Book 2 from Oct. 12-14, while 602 lots are catalogued for Book 3 from Oct. 15-16. Book 4 features 83 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Oct. 17.

Alumni of Book 2 include champion and MG1SW sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Australian MG1SW Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), G1 Australian Cup winner Fifty Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), scintillating G1 Sussex S. victor Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), and progressive grey Way to Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), winner of the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Quality is not in short supply among the many offerings, as there are full- or half-siblings to 174 group and listed winners, and 110 yearlings out of group or listed-winning mares. All of the yearlings in Books 3 and 4 are eligible for the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction S.

The Time Test (GB) half-brother to Star Catcher hails from Hascombe and Valiant Stud, and he is also a half-brother to Lemon Drop Kid’s duo of GI Pattison Canadian International S. hero and young sire Cannock Chase, and MGSW Pisco Sour. However, he is not the only sibling to a Classic winner, as Jamie Railton offers lot 856, a son of Australia (GB) out of the three-time winner Honorine (Ire) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). She is the dam of Galileo (Ire)’s Treasure Beach (GB), winner of the G1 Irish Derby.

Also selling are half-siblings to Group 1 winners Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB})-a filly by Muhaarar (GB) as lot 1165 from Hillwood Stud–and Donjuan Triumphant (Ire) (Dream Ahead), Kilcam Park’s lot 985, a son of Invincible Sprit (Ire). Group 1 winner Chachamaidee (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand [GB})’s Sea The Stars (Ire) yearling filly (lot 674) goes through the ring from Houghton Bloodstock. Kodiac (GB), fresh off daughter Campanelle (Ire)’s win in the G1 Darley Prix Morny, is represented by a son (lot 802) out of GI E. P. Taylor S. heroine Fraulein (GB) (Acatenango {Ger}) from Lodge Park Stud.

Other established sires the likes of Acclamation (GB), Camelot (GB), Dark Angel (Ire), Exceed And Excel (Aus), Frankel (GB), Invincible Spirit (Ire), Kingman (GB), Lope de Vega (Ire), Nathaniel (Ire), Night of Thunder (Ire), No Nay Never, Pivotal (GB) and Showcasing (GB) have yearlings in the catalogues.

Leading first-season sire Mehmas (Ire), who already has four black-type winners, is represented by 10 yearlings in Book 2, and there are 18 first-crop sires represented, among them Aclaim (Ire), Caravaggio, Churchill (Ire), Decorated Knight (GB), Galileo Gold (GB), Highland Reel (Ire), Mondialiste (Ire), National Defense (GB), Postponed (Ire), Profitable (Ire), Ribchester (Ire) and Ulysses (Ire). Some of the French stallions represented number Le Havre (Ire), Shalaa (Ire) and Siyouni (Fr), while Wootton Bassett (GB), who was recently relocated to Ireland, has seven. The latter’s champion son Almanzor (Fr) has an equal number. American sires Air Force Blue, Flintshire (GB), Kitten’s Joy, and Nyquist also have yearlings slated to sell.

In 2019, 620 yearlings grossed 48,499,000gns, with an average of 78,224gns and a median of 55,500gns in Book 2. The top price of 1,050,000gns was paid by Shadwell for a daughter of Dark Angel (Ire) out of a daughter of blue hen MGSW Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}).

“Both the highest rated colt in Europe, Mohaather and the highest rated sprinter in Europe, Battaash, were purchased at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and Book 3 has also had another outstanding year demonstrating the consistent quality to be found in the second week of the October Yearling Sales at Park Paddocks,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “Huge demand for places in our yearling sales has ensured catalogues of real depth and quality catering to buyers at all levels of the market from throughout the world.”

British Racing Agrees On Recovery Plan

Representatives of the British Horseracing Authority, horsemen and racecourses have agreed on a plan for the next stages of the industry’s recovery plan from COVID-19.

The recovery plan lists nine industry goals, which are as follows:

To secure a full resumption of race-day activity, with the best possible ownership and spectator experience, and the maximum attendance possible;
To maintain the health and safety of participants, staff and all those attending raceday meetings by continuing the safe return of racing and adherence to strict controls on social distancing;
To put in place a fixture list and race programme for 2021 that balances increasing revenues with the well being of participants and staff and takes account of the horse population;
To reduce the industry’s cost-base and be agile where new opportunities to increase revenue can be seized and mitigate the impact of recession, including the pursuit of immediate Levy reform;
To seek to maximise prize money for 2021 balanced against the financial constraints of stakeholders and the sport’s projected revenues, through new commercial agreements between racecourses and horsemen;
To agree a spending plan for central funds that best supports racing’s recovery;
To retain key investors, including existing owners, and reform rules for syndicates and clubs to protect members and increase their appeal to potential owners;
To present a safe, high-quality and consistent offer to race-day and betting customers based on a thorough understanding of their changing needs and behaviours due to COVID;
To put in place foundations for a longer-term sustainable recovery for British racing.

Nick Rust, chief executive of the BHA, said, “it’s very important that this plan has been agreed by leaders from all parts of the racing industry. We know from the way we prepared to resume racing in June that working together works. The commitment shown by leaders in signing up to this recovery plan demonstrates a continued willingness to maintain a unified approach through the tough battles ahead.”

David Armstrong, chief executive of the Racecourse Association, added, “the whole industry worked very well to enable racing to return as the first major sport behind closed doors. Now we have to renew that collaboration as we enter this recovery phase and move beyond that into 2021. This plan brings together all the necessary components in one clear action plan with some ambitious goals. From a racecourse perspective the return of racegoers and the experience for owners are clear priorities that are already underway and we look forward to the wider recovery of the sport.”

Charlie Liverton, chief executive of the Racehorse Owners Association, said, “this new recovery plan goes further towards protecting the long-term future of our sport and formalizing collaboration between the stakeholders during this difficult period. It is imperative that we focus on the vital drivers that keep our sport going and growing: retaining owners and maximizing the sport’s revenues. There is a lot to be done but I am confident that, working together, we can deliver this vital work for participants across the industry.”

Mohaather Retired From Racing

Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}-Roodeye {GB}, by Inchinor {GB}), a group winner at two, three and four who earned his first Group 1 victory last out in the Sussex S., has been retired to stud due to bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint.

“Towards the end of last week it was noticed that Mohaather was not moving as well as he had been immediately after the Sussex S.,” said Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Sheikh Hamdan. “Precautionary x-rays were taken over the weekend which have revealed significant bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint. Unfortunately this will put paid to the rest of his campaign, and as a result Sheikh Hamdan has taken the decision to retire the colt to stud.

“Mohaather won group races as a 2-, 3- and 4-year-old and reserved his best effort for his last outing, where he beat the winners of this year’s English and Irish 2000 Guineas, together with dual Group 1 Royal Ascot winner Circus Maximus, quickening from an impossible position inside the last two furlongs in the manner of a top-class miler. While it is sad that he will not get the chance to take on the best of the milers in the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot and the Breeders’ Cup at the end of this year, he retires at the top of his game, and on behalf of HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum I would like to thank Marcus Tregoning and his team for the outstanding job they did with him.”

Bred by Gaie Johnson Houghton, Mohaather was bought by Shadwell for 110,000gns during Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2017. Sent to Marcus Tregoning, he was spotted three times at two, winning twice including the G3 Horris Hill S. He showed promise on debut at three with a victory in the G3 Greenham S., but was not seen again until running fifth in the Queen Elizabeth II S. on Champions Day. Seventh behind Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot first up this year, he then took the G2 Summer Mile by 3 3/4 lengths prior to the Sussex.

Mohaather is a full-brother to Prize Exhibit (GB), winner of four graded stakes in the U.S., and is a half to the dam of Johnson Houghton’s G1 Queen Anne S. winner Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}).

Goffs Moves Orby Sale Forward

Goffs will shift its two-day Orby yearling sale-to be staged this year at Goffs UK’s Doncaster sales complex-forward by a day and it will now take place on Sept. 30 and Oct 1. The change was made to allow an additional day between Orby and Tattersalls October Book 1. Orby yearlings will ship into Doncaster on Sept. 27, following the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale there on Sept. 24 and 25.

“Our job is to deliver the greatest opportunity for every lot with which we are entrusted,” said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby. “Feedback from a wide range of Orby vendors since Friday was that the timing between Orby and Tattersalls Book 1 was too tight and we were asked to revisit the dates both for vendor logistics and to ensure that every lot receives the full attention of the maximum number of potential purchasers for the most time. At this difficult time we are mindful of working for everyone in the industry and so, after discussing the matter at length with Edmond Mahony at Tattersalls, we have decided to move the Orby Sale back 24 hours whilst we will also turn the complex around in 24 hours following the Sportsman’s Sale to ensure the stables are ready for the Orby yearlings that much earlier, so allowing them to settle in before showing starts. Every hour counts for these world-class yearlings and we have listened carefully to the feedback and requests that have come from all our vendors, many of whom will also be selling the following week. An extra 24 hour window might make all the difference at the end of our sale so having the stables ready a day earlier will also be important. On both counts the Goffs team will do whatever it takes to deliver.”
