Oxted One of 15 Entered for Betfair Sprint Cup

Roger Teal‘s Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}), who won the G1 July Cup in the colours of Stephen Piper, Tony Hirschfield and David Fish, is one of 15 standing their ground for the upcoming G1 Betfair Sprint Cup on Sept. 5.

“All seems good–fingers crossed, we’ll get there in one piece,” said the conditioner. “I’ve had a quick look at the entries. I was watching them come in, and it’s what was expected. If the ground tightens up it would help no end. I have tried him twice before on an easier surface, and he hasn’t run to form, but I don’t think it was the ground. There were other reasons. It’s not that he has to have the ground rattling fast–but if it was good to soft, it’d be perfect.”

Since his victory in the July Cup, Oxted had an ulcer removed from the back of his throat and Teal remains confident the procedure would not mar his horse’s chances.

“He had a little wind op after Newmarket,” he said. “He had an ulcer on the back of his throat. We had that removed. He was scoped after the July Cup, so he must have run with it. It was a simple procedure.”

Hollie Doyle, who rode a five-timer at Windsor on Saturday, has the call aboard G3 Phoenix Sprint S. hero Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) for trainer Archie Watson. It will be Doyle’s first ride in a British Group 1.

Doyle told Sky Sports Racing, “I’m really looking forward to riding Glen–he’s been a flag-bearer for the yard really. He keeps on surprising us. He’s improving with age and he’s got quicker the older he’s got, which is strange. He’s going the right way. He’s an old legend. The ground is the key to him really, and he’ll get his ground at Haydock and a stiff enough six [furlongs]. I’m hoping for a good run.”

Others entered include G1 Diamond Jubilee winner Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the 2019 edition of the Haydock Sprint Cup, as well as his stablemates Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Queen Jo Jo (GB) (Gregorian {Ire}). All three are trained by Kevin Ryan.

James Fanshawe saddles 2018 winner The Tin Man (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) and Archer’s Dream (Ire) (Dream Ahead). G1 Commonwealth Cup S. winner Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) for Clive Cox and G2 Hungerford S. winner Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) are also slated to line up, among others.

Audarya Camp Mulling Options

Group 1 winner Audarya (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) will make her next start in either the G2 Moyglare ‘Jewels’ Blandford S. at The Curragh on Sept. 13 or the G1 Prix de l’Opera on Oct. 4, trainer James Fanshawe has revealed. The winner of the Aug. 23 G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet last out, Audarya was second in a Saint-Cloud listed affair as a 2-year-old in September of 2019.

“She is in the Blandford on Sept. 13, but that might come a bit quick and she would have a penalty in that,” said Fanshawe. “I would really like to go back to France for the Opera. I hope she can keep in the same form until October 4. It was great to win on Sunday though and we are still enjoying that.”

Jim Crowley Reaches 2000-Win Milestone

Champion jockey Jim Crowley rode his 2000th winner aboard Shadwell’s  Modmin (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) in the Ladbrokes Supporting ‘Children With Cancer UK’ Novice S. at Goodwood on Sunday. Crowley, who rides is the retained rider for Sheikh Hamdan’s operation, was previously a jumps jockey based in the north.

“It has been a fantastic season so far and I hope it continues,” said Crowley. “It was nice to do it here as it’s my local track. I’ve got a lot of fond memories here and to ride it in these colours for Marcus [Tregoning] was nice.

“Battaash at York was a highlight the first year and Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) winning in the fashion he did in such a good race here (Sussex S.), those three really stick out for me and it is hard to pick one.”

“It is massive [becoming retained rider for Sheikh Hamdan]. I felt very fortunate to get the job. When I was champion jockey that probably got me noticed. It is a dream come true and touch wood it is going well.”

The Shadwell colours have been firmly in the limelight this season, with Crowley aboard such stars as MG1SW sprinter Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), G2 Duke Of Cambridge S. heroine Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), GSW Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Enbihaar (Ire) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}), a MGSW who won the G2 Lonsdale Cup S. at York last out.

Crowley is not resting on his laurels, however, and said, “We’ve got some lovely horses coming through at the moment and I’m a big fan of Enbihaar and hopefully they just keep coming. It’s not easy as some big operations have lean years, but at the moment we are having a good run. It’s not impossible to get 3,000. It might seem a long way away now stood here, but so did 2,000 and so did 1,000. We will keep batting away and see where we end up.

“I’d love to win a Classic as I’ve been second in an Oaks and two St Legers, not that I’m counting. That is the one thing I would love to do, as I’ve rattled the crossbar in most of them.”

Delia Bushell Resigns From The Jockey Club

Jockey Club Group Chief Executive Delia Bushell, who was appointed to her post last July, has resigned from The Jockey Club, Sporting Life reported on Sunday afternoon. A review found evidence to support allegations of bullying co-workers and racist comments. A report was submitted by an independent barrister to the sub-committee of the board last week. In her place, The Jockey Club has appointed Nevin Truesdale the acting group chief executive.

“The board of The Jockey Club announces today that Delia Bushell is to stand down as group chief executive with immediate effect,” The Jockey Club said in a statement to the PA news agency. “This follows the completion of an independent review into a wide range of allegations about her conduct, which the board concluded made it untenable for her to continue in the role.

“As part of this review, an independent barrister interviewed 19 witnesses including Delia. He submitted a detailed report to a sub-committee of the board comprising Dido Harding, Julia Budd and Justin Dowley on Sunday 23 Aug. in which he concluded that there was evidence to support a number of the allegations of misconduct including bullying behaviour towards colleagues, inappropriate racist comments and sharing offensive materials.

“The sub-committee of the board agreed with his conclusion and decided that there was a basis for disciplinary action against Delia including on the grounds of gross misconduct. This recommendation was accepted by the full board of The Jockey Club.”
