Godolphin Triple Threat In Moulin

Three of Godolphin’s finest make up a stellar six-strong field for Sunday’s G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, with the main focus on the operation’s champion Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal). Back to a mile following his initial 3-year-old success in the seven-furlong G1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville on July 12, last year’s sensational G1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National S. winner has yet to truly convince that he is as effective over this trip as he looked to be outstayed when third in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on June 6 and second to Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot a fortnight later. Charlie Appleby said, “We were delighted to see Pinatubo get his head back in front in the Prix Jean Prat after gallant efforts in the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace S. We purposely gave him a break after that run with the view of going for this race. His preparation has gone well and we are looking forward to stepping him back up to a mile. It’s a very competitive race, but we are very confident that we have Pinatubo in great shape and he is going to run a big race. I think it will be tactical, but Pinatubo is blessed with the way he travels and his turn of foot. Hopefully, if we can get everything in the right order, he is going to be a big player.”

Also in the royal blue are the Andre Fabre-trained TDN Rising Stars Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) and Victor Ludorum (Ire) (Shamardal), who are the two most recent winners of the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains and who both placed in their respective renewals of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. While both have been tried over further, they have proven to be versatile with regards to trip and form a strong second line for the operation. Persian King was fourth when last year’s Moulin winner Circus Maximus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was third behind Palace Pier in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Aug. 16, with Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) back in fifth, but that was on deep ground which also played against Victor Ludorum as he was third in that track’s G2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano tackling 10 furlongs on Aug. 15. “The Prix Jacques le Marois was a race run under very particular circumstances and Persian King’s performance reflected that,” Fabre commented. “The conditions are much more in his favour here. Victor Ludorum has come out of his last race in good form and we are looking forward to seeing him back over a mile.”

Robert Ng’s Romanised went down narrowly to Circus Maximus in a battle royal 12 months ago and there was controversy that the stewards let the result stand. Romanised is a true class act when the ground is riding good or quicker as it is likely to be on Sunday and his Jacques le Marois effort can be forgiven with the surface sapping his class. Trainer Ken Condon is enjoying his best season and said, “We’re very happy with the horse. He did his last piece of work on Tuesday morning and it went very smoothly. They tell me the ground will be good or even on the quick side, which will suit Romanised very well.”

Also from Ireland is Khalid Abdullah’s June 12 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Siskin (First Defence), who suffered a reversal for the first time when third behind Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and Circus Maximus in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood on July 29. “He was beaten by two better horses on the day at Goodwood, but it was a lovely run by the horse,” trainer Ger Lyons commented. “We were beaten by an exceptional miler in Mohaather and a rock-solid horse in Circus Maximus. I thought my horse ran a career-best and he was just found wanting against two stronger animals on the day. Physically he’s definitely improved through the summer. He’s not ground-dependent, but I know he likes faster ground–that’s what he’s most comfortable on.”

ParisLongchamp’s card also features the G3 Prix la Rochette for 2-year-olds over seven furlongs and Appleby is represented by Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the 4 1/2-length winner of York’s Aug. 21 Convivial maiden over this trip. “Naval Crown won a strong maiden in good fashion and came out of the race well,” Appleby said. “He has come on with each run and this looks a nice race for him to step up to pattern company.” He meets Haras de la Gousserie and Guy Pariente’s impressive Aug. 6 Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles winner Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) and a promising Jean-Claude Rouget project in Jean-Louis Bouchard’s June 30 Saint-Cloud winner Darkness (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}).

There are two 10-furlong contests on the card, with the G3 La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte for older horses featuring The Aga Khan’s Aug. 23 G1 Darley Prix Jean Romanet fourth Dariyma (Fr) (City Zip) and the G3 Prix du Prince d’Orange for the Classic generation seeing Team Valor International, Andre Brakha and Anant Singh’s Hurricane Dream (Fr) (Hurricane Cat) bid to confirm the form of Deauville’s Aug. 16 Listed Prix Nureyev with the runner-up Dawn Intello (Fr) (Intello {Ger}). Both took part in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly on July 5, with Dawn Intello finishing fourth and Hurricane Dream ninth after contrasting trips throughout that 10 1/2-furlong Classic. Eighth was another Rouget runner in Ecurie Antonio Caro’s Fantastic Spirit (Fr) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) and he has subsequently enjoyed a confidence-restoring handicap win on heavy ground at Deauville on Aug. 15.

Dream Ahead’s Dream of Dreams Wins the Sprint Cup

Finally gaining the top-level success his record demanded, Saeed Suhail’s Dream of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) justified 5-2 favouritism in a strong renewal of Haydock’s G1 Betfair Sprint Cup on Saturday. Tracking the correct pace racing among the stand’s-side group throughout the early stages, the ultra-impressive G2 Hungerford S. winner was delivered by Oisin Murphy to lead passing the furlong pole. Despite the game efforts of Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) from there, the Freemason Lodge stalwart had too much in hand and hit the line with 1 1/4 lengths to spare over the former, with a neck back to the consistent Golden Horde in third. “I was really excited about getting back on him, as the feel he gave me the last day was incredible so I’m thrilled he backed that up,” Murphy said. “He travelled well and picked up slowly–he didn’t have that burst like last time but I think it was because he didn’t have a lot to race with. He tends to drift a little left and doesn’t do much in front, but I had Golden Horde that way for something to race with. To ride group 1 winners for Sir Michael Stoute is the stuff of dreams.”

Dream of Dreams’ seven-length Hungerford romp was not coming out of turn, with conditions ideal there as he moved back up to seven furlongs again Aug. 15. Equally as effective over this trip, as he had shown when a strong-closing runner-up in the last two editions of Royal Ascot’s G1 Diamond Jubilee S., he had at times in the past two years disappointed when it came to the crunch in the major sprints and was only eighth in this in 2019. In a good place since being gelded after also flopping in the G1 QIPCO British Champion Sprint S. at Ascot in October, he had built on his June 20 Diamond Jubilee effort with his emphatic Newbury triumph and capped it with this achievement. Back over the course and distance over which he broke his maiden in May 2016 when trained by Kevin Ryan, the chestnut was eventually reaching the summit.

With so many notable sprinters well beaten here, connections have no fear of targetting the upcoming Champions Sprint and the owner’s representative Philip Robinson said, “He’s just all of a sudden improved. The gelding has helped, without a shadow of a doubt. His mind is in the job. He’s a different horse now and I think Sir Michael’s big trick with him is to keep him fresh and he’s giving him plenty of time between races. He’s thriving. He’s discovering how easy it is and now he’s got his confidence, onwards and upwards. Champions Day is very possible. I think that will probably be his next target.”

Dream of Dreams is likely to meet Glen Shiel there after another honourable run from the improved fellow 6-year-old. “He rallied when headed and he’s chased the winner all the way to the line,” jockey Hollie Doyle said. “I can’t fault him. I thought I might win two down. Nothing was on my girths, but then the winner started coming. He ran a massive race and Archie has done an amazing job placing him throughout the season. He keeps improving himself and I didn’t expect to travel as well as he did–he surprised me.”

The winner’s unraced dam Vasilia (GB) (Dansili {GB}) has also produced the G3 Solario S. runner-up Silverheels (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) and the Listed Dragon S. runner-up Lasilia (Ire) Acclamation {GB}), who is in turn the dam of the listed-placed Brassica (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Vasilia is kin to the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Airwave (GB) (Air Express {Ire}), whose three black-type winners include the G3 Lanwades Stud Fillies’ S. winner Aloof (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the Listed Curragh S. winner and G2 Queen Mary S. runner-up Meow (Ire) (Storm Cat). She achieved notoriety as Broodmare of the Year in 2017 courtesy of the exploits of her Galileo progeny Churchill (Ire) and Clemmie (Ire). Airwave’s ill-fated half-sister Jwala (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) caused an upset when winning the G1 Nunthorpe S. before being fatally-injured in the 2013 G1 Hong Kong Sprint. Vasilia’s 2-year-old colt Fantastic Fox (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was bought by SackvilleDonald for 260,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, while her yearling filly by Galileo (Ire) is due to sell at the upcoming Book 1.

Stroll For Enable In the September

John Gosden could hardly have scripted a better 2020 for Clarehaven’s standard-bearer Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) and Saturday’s G3 Unibet September S. at Kempton turned out the predicted stroll all expected as she works towards her historic Arc attempt. Providing the only anxious moment for 1-14 backers when awkward from the stalls, the Juddmonte juggernaut was soon in command as Frankie showed his intent to keep it simple. Tracked throughout by Kirstenbosch (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}), she went through the contest like a piece of strong exercise and there were seven lengths to spare over that unexposed 4-year-old at the line. “She did it very nicely, very smoothly,” her trainer said. “The track is riding deeper than usual and Frankie felt she didn’t find it as easy to be as fluent on as she normally is. She normally springs off that, but it’s just riding a bit sticky. Apart from that he was absolutely delighted with her. She has had a nice blow and a good day out. She was idling a bit in front and the race would have just brought her on nicely. She will have a nice easy 10 days and then we will build up to the Arc.”

Bar encountering the mighty presence of Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) when making her seasonal bow in the July 5 G1 Eclipse S. at Sandown, Enable’s current campaign has gone like clockwork with her bringing up a unique treble in Ascot’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. July 25 that might stand unmatched for some time. Gosden now has to deliver her for her date with destiny on the first Sunday next month. “She came close last year and we will do our best to put that right, but what she has done already with all the races she has won is pretty extraordinary,” he added. “She was fresh to saddle and was quick with her hind feet. She was just full of herself. I think down at the start didn’t help as she was waiting for the other horse to be reshod. Frankie floated up there and she had a nice race–perfectly what you want, with hands and heels.”

“I think it was probably three-quarters mental and one-quarter physical preparation today,” he continued. “This was as much to mentally let her let a little steam off and chill her and give her 10 days and build her up to the Arc. The race will just sharpen her mental attitude. She found it difficult to get to her racing weight and I didn’t want to push her in any way. She got tired in the last furlong in the Eclipse, but ran a lovely race and then came back in the King George. That was the most important part, as her metabolism changed. She is wiser now and a 6-year-old mare is different to a 3-year-old filly. She is robust and she does have that mental strength. The great tennis players get to that fifth set and when they are two sets all it is mental strength that wins it above anything else.”

Looking ahead to the opposition at ParisLongchamp, Gosden has his eye in particular on Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). “We have got tons of respect for the Oaks winner, who is a brilliant filly and is getting the weight allowance Enable did when she was that age,” he said. “You would love to see the ground good-to-soft, you don’t want to see it bottomless but it is next to the River Seine and we are in the autumn.”

Enable’s finale in her native country came just 24 hours after her 2-year-old half-brother Derab (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) put in such a promising debut when second at Ascot. The listed-winning and group-placed dam Concentric (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) also has a yearling full-brother to Enable and by the time he is enjoying his first outing it could be that she has a second Classic winner. Also the dam of the G2 Prix de Pomone runner-up Contribution (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and the G3 Musidora S. runner-up Entitle (GB) (Dansili {GB}), she is a daughter of the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Apogee (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}) and a full-sister to the G2 Prix de Royallieu scorer and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine (GB). Another Ascot Rising Star As Kingman’s Love Is You Excites

TDN Rising Stars kept coming at Ascot on Saturday, with Normandie Stud’s newcomer Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) swooping to take the well-contested Moet & Chandon British EBF Fillies’ Novice S. over a mile at the Berkshire venue. A daughter of Fallen For You (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who had her finest hour over this course and distance when winning the 2012 G1 Coronation S., the homebred half-sister to last year’s G2 Hungerford S. winner Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was held up early at the back by Jason Watson. Looking set for minor honours only as the 6-5 market-leader Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) loomed with menace on the home turn, the 3-1 second favourite instead delivered a flourish as that half-sister to last year’s G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) began to fade in the closing stages. It was Godolphin’s prior winner Last Sunset (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who looked to have edged it, but Love Is You was flying out wide and grabbed her in the final strides for a neck success, with Monsoon Moon eventually 1 1/4 lengths behind in third.

“She will have learnt plenty from that,” trainer Roger Charlton said of the G1 Fillies’ Mile entry. “She was very relaxed early on and I was concerned the game was up when the favourite cruised up, but she picked up well and her last furlong was her best. I think it was quite a decent field and the favourite will also improve a lot, as she looked to get tired. They are nice fillies and she won going away. I entered her in her group 1 three days ago, as she’s been pleasing us.”

Aside from winning the Coronation, Fallen For You was also second in the G2 May Hill S. as a juvenile and her second foal Glorious Journey was purchased for 2.6million gns at the 2016 Tattersalls October Sale Book 1. He went on to win the G2 Al Fahidi Fort, G3 Prix Daphnis and G3 Prix la Rochette as well as the aforementioned Hungerford, GSW-UAE, GSW-Eng, MGSW-Fr, $473,188. The second dam Fallen Star (GB) (Brief Truce) captured the Listed Silver Trophy and was runner-up in the G3 Premio Sergio Cumani before also producing the Listed Heron S. winner Fallen Idol (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Also the ancestress of the G3 Prix de Flore winner Loving Things (GB) by Pivotal, she is kin to the G1 Lockinge S. hero Fly To the Stars (GB) (Bluebird) and National Day (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) who produced the G2 German 2000 Guineas scorer Peace At Last (Ire) (Oasis Dream {Ire}). Also connected to the G1 Levin Classic hero Age of Fire (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Fallen For You’s unraced 3-year-old colt Turquoise Kingdom (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was sold for 500,000gns at the Book 1 Sale, while she also has a foal full-sister to Love Is You to come.
