First Black-Type Winner For New Bay at Doncaster

There was a first black-type winner for the Ballylinch Stud-based New Bay (GB) (by Dubawi {Ire}) on Friday as Marc Chan’s New Mandate (Ire) got up close home in Doncaster’s Listed bet365 Flying Scotsman S. Keen early for Frankie Dettori restrained towards the rear of the group racing up the centre, the Aug. 23 Sandown nursery winner who was sent off at 17-2 found a gap up the far rail to wear down Laneqash (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) in the final strides for a head success, with the 5-4 favourite One Ruler (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) 2 1/2 lengths back in third. The dam, who also has a filly foal by Camacho (GB), is a half-sister to Puggy (Ire) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}) who was third in the G2 Rockfel S. and the G3 Polar Cup and runner-up in the Listed Oh So Sharp S. Her daughter Avenir Certain (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) achieved fame by completing the revered G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches-Prix de Diane double, while this family of Warrsan (Ire) (Caerleon) and Queen’s Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}) also features the G2 Richmond S. and G2 July S.-winning red-hot first-season sire Mehmas (Ire).

Noble Mission’s Spanish Mission On Top In the Doncaster Cup

Tackling near two and a quarter miles for the first time, Team Valor and Gary Barber’s Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) excelled at the trip to win Friday’s G2 bet365 Doncaster Cup and stake his claim as a major player in the staying category. Always travelling easily in fifth for William Buick, the 6-4 favourite who had won the Aug. 20 Listed Chester S. after his move to Andrew Balding loomed alongside Selino (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) with purpose having already travelled two miles. Sent into the clear from there, he surged to a three-length success from that rival, with the long-time leader The Grand Visir (GB) (Frankel {GB}) four lengths adrift in third. “He was over-racing at stages, but he was never really doing too much,” Buick said. “He was always going to come into the race easily, it was just whether he’d see it out and he did see it out very well. He’s got that bit of class against these stayers, that turn of foot. That together with his stamina is a good combination. I’m sure all those races will be on his radar. Who knows, potentially next year he might even make up into a Gold Cup horse.”

Coming to the fore when beating that solid yardstick Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by four lengths in Newmarket’s 13-furlong G3 Bahrain Trophy in July, Spanish Mission was third behind him in Goodwood’s G3 Gordon S. before annexing the Jockey Club Derby Invitational at Belmont in September. Second to this stable’s Dashing Willoughby (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in Sandown’s G3 Henry II S. over two miles July 5, the bay was sixth on his final start for David Simcock in the July 28 G1 Goodwood Cup before his confidence-restoring three-length defeat of Selino on his bow for Kingsclere at Chester. Repeating that form to the exact margin here, he entered into the picture for the G2 QIPCO Long Distance Cup at Ascot. “That is really the only race for him if he is going to run again this year, but the ground might have gone too soft for him by then, so we’ll see,” Balding said.

The first foal out of the listed-winning dam Limonar (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}) was the Listed Rose Bowl S. winner and G2 Gimcrack S. runner-up Mokarris (More Than Ready). She is a half-sister to the GI Shoemaker Mile winner Talco (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) from the family of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Bachelor Duke (Miswaki) and the G1 National S.-winning sire Fatherland (Ire). Her 3-year-old filly Dame Iris (Medaglia d’Oro) is unraced, while her yearling colt by Mastery is due to sell on Thursday at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She has been bred to Uncle Mo this year.

Jockey Crosse Tests Positive For COVID

Irish apprentice jockey Shane Crosse, who was set to travel to Doncaster on Saturday to ride the Joseph O’Brien-trained Galileo Chrome (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in the G1 St Leger and State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in the G2 Champagne S., has tested positive for COVID-19 and has begun a 14-day isolation.

Crosse has been asymptomatic and was tested as part of the protocol for traveling overseas to ride.

Dr. Jennifer Pugh, the Irish Horse Racing Board’s senior medical officer, said, “Shane was completely asymptomatic and was very surprised to learn of the test result. He was not unwell and hadn’t engaged in any high-risk behaviour. He is now in isolation for 14 days and has worked with us on identifying his close contacts.

“We have been in communication with Public Health today, notified them of the test, and they are happy with the steps we have taken. It means that those who have shared a car with him, and those who live with Shane, have been informed they must also self-isolate for 14 days. As directed by Public Health, contact tracing commenced on Friday morning and testing will be carried out today of all close contacts of the index case.

“We have been prepared for this and have responded accordingly, and this case reinforces just why we have had such strict protocols in place since racing resumed on June 8. These measures ensure that social distancing is taking place at racecourses, and face masks and coverings are mandatory both inside and outside.

“Shane is employed by trainer Joseph O’Brien and we have been working with Joseph this morning to provide contact tracing and testing of Shane’s close contacts. Joseph’s horses will run today as planned, but as a precaution these horses will be taken care of by staff from other yards. Public Health are satisfied with our protocols and the measures we have taken, and for racing to continue under strict protocols behind closed doors.”

Kodiac’s Ubettabelieveit Takes the Flying Childers

Bouncing back from a last-place finish in the G2 Gimcrack S. at York Aug. 21, the July 16 Listed National S. winner Ubettabelieveit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) edged out Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in a thriller to capture Friday’s G2 Bombardier Flying Childers S. at Doncaster. Drawn widest, the bay who was sent off at an inflated 40-1 raced in rear of the group racing up the centre early before moving to the fore approaching the furlong pole. Gaining a narrow advantage over that 11-10 favourite with 150 yards remaining, he drifted right but was always holding her to score by a short head, with Measure of Magic (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths away in third. Ridden by Rowan Scott, the winner was providing the burgeoning jockey with an instant breakthrough. “I’m delighted to get a group winner so soon after riding my claim out,” he said. “The horse did it very well, he didn’t make it easy for himself, but it’s happy days. It was a big race so I wanted to do everything right, but you have to treat it like another race.”

Successful by 3 1/2 lengths in a course-and-distance novice contest June 30, Ubettabelieveit went up the ladder again with success in the National also at this trip at Sandown July 16 before pulling his chance away and flopping in the Gimcrack. Trainer Nigel Tinkler had kept the faith and his stable star had a suitably strong pace to aim at in this race which was swerved by the G2 Norfolk S. winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) due to the drying ground. “He showed how good he was in the National Stakes–he’s a very, very good horse,” he said of the latest longshot to win a juvenile pattern race in 2020. “Last time, I probably shouldn’t have run him over six there. He ran too keen and the ground was horrific. Everything went wrong, but luckily Oisin Murphy looked after him. How he was 40-1 I don’t know–it was probably because I train him! Unbelievable. You’re always wondering at this time of year, but he was working well and this is brilliant. He was given a fantastic ride.”

Tinkler revealed that he is yet to be tempted by a tilt at the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp, where he will receive a sizeable weight-for-age allowance. “There’s a one per-cent chance he could run in the Abbaye,” he added. “He wouldn’t run there if it was soft, but that’s the one race you’d have to possibly think about. It’s one per-cent, because it might be soft by then. We’ll see how he is–the ground would have to be no worse than good.”

Ubettabelieveit’s dam Ladylishandra (Ire) (Mujadil) had already produced a trio of black-type winners, which makes it all the more remarkable that he was available for just 50,000gns at the Tattersalls October Book 1. They are Harlem Shake (Ire) (Moss Vale {Ire}), who took the G3 Premio Omenoni, Tropical Paradise (Ire) (Verglas {Ire}) who annexed the G3 Oak Tree S. and G3 Supreme S., and Shenanigans (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) who had her day in the sun in the Listed Rothesay S. and was also third in the G3 Princess Elizabeth S. and G3 Hoppings S. The family includes the sires Jim French, Ajdal, Formidable and Caesour. Ladylishandra’s yearling filly by Galileo Gold (GB) is catalogued in the upcoming Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale.
