Pat Smullen Laid To Rest

In St Peter’s Church, which was bedecked with flowers from the garden at Moyglare Stud, Pat Smullen was laid to rest on Friday near his home in Rhode.

The family service, restricted in numbers because of Covid-19 protocols, was streamed via Zoom and was joined by 700 mourners from around the world, including many of the multiple champion jockey’s friends from the weighing-room.

Paying tribute to her husband during the service, Frances Crowley referred to the fact that his death came exactly a year after the Pat Smullen Champions Race, which helped to raise more than €2.5 million for Cancer Trials Ireland during Irish Champions Weekend.

“I think that symbolises exactly what it meant to him,” she said.

Smullen, 43, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2018 and died in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin on Tuesday evening. As he was brought home to Co Offaly on Wednesday, the hearse passed by the Curragh, where the flags flew at half-mast at the racecourse which had been the scene of some his greatest triumphs, including two Irish Derby victories aboard Harzand (Ire) and Grey Swallow (Ire). Harzand’s saddle cloths from the Derby and Irish Derby were draped across his coffin.

In her composed address, which acknowledged the loss felt by her husband’s legion of family and friends, Crowley offered encouragement to others facing a similar struggle with illness.

She said, “I have a message to you from Pat: keep going, don’t lose heart, please don’t let this knock you back.”

Crowley’s moving tribute ended with her own message to her husband, “We know you did your best in everything you did, Pat. You always did your best. Always.”

Make A Challenge To Abbaye

Make a Challenge (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) will make his next appearance in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye Oct. 4. The winner of four of six starts this season, including a pair of Irish listed stakes in August, the gelding finished fifth–beaten two lengths–in his most recent start in the Curragh’s G1 Flying Five S. Sept. 13.

“We were very happy with the horse,” said Hogan. “He raced out on his own for most of the race and the drying ground probably didn’t help, but I think the main thing was he was drawn away from them and the race got away on him a little bit.”

Hogan continued, “We were delighted with the run really and all being well, we’ll go straight for the Abbaye–you’d like to think we’ll get a bit of cut in the ground at Longchamp.”

“He’s also in the Qipco British Champions Sprint at Ascot over six furlongs, but the Abbaye is the plan at the moment.”

Mishriff on Track for Champion

French Derby winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) remains on course for the Oct. 17 G1 Qipco Champion S. at Ascot. The 3-year-old’s connections opted not to supplement the G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner for the G1 Qatar Pix de l’Arc de Triomphe in favor of Ascot’s 10-furlong feature. In his latest start, Mishriff won the Aug. 15 G2 Prix Guillaume D’Ornano at Deauville.

“He’s bouncing, he’s going well and he’s waiting for his date at Ascot,” said Ted Voute, racing manager to owner Prince Faisal. [Trainer] John [Gosden] and the Prince made a decision and that’s where we’re going. We’ve just got to find out what we’re racing against.”

Voute added, “At the moment he’s showing a nice turn of foot which they are not always blessed with. Let’s hope he can keep doing that when it’s needed.”

Voute also offered an update on Prince Faisal 2-year-old Third Kingdom (GB) (Make Believe {GB}). The colt has finished third in two career starts, including his latest when finishing behind subsequent Listed Solario S. winner Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}) at Sandown on July 23 .

“He was down to go to Chelmsford the other day and just had a bit of heat in a joint and they elected not to go,” explained Voute. “It has since been looked at and is nothing serious. He should be out soon.”

He added, “The form of that second race of his has come out quite nicely, so it was a shame he couldn’t go to Chelmsford as it looked like his for the taking, but we’re waiting for John [Gosden] to give him an entry and see how good he is.”

O’Brien Pays Tribute To “Irreplaceable” Smullen

Aidan O’Brien described Pat Smullen as “irreplaceable” on Thursday, two days after his brother-in-law and nine-time Irish champion jockey lost his battle with pancreatic cancer aged 43.

While Smullen’s and O’Brien’s wives Frances Crowley and Annemarie O’Brien are sisters and highly accomplished horsewomen, Smullen spent much of his career in rivalry with O’Brien as stable jockey to Dermot Weld.

“Pat was one very special person–one of these people you meet once in a lifetime,” O’Brien told Sky Sports Racing. “He is irreplaceable. He was genuine, tough, consistent–an unbelievable horseman and a brilliant jockey. He helped everybody and was very sincere to everybody. Nothing about Pat was false–he was true to everybody. I think that’s why he was so admired and will never be forgotten. We felt privileged to know him and to have worked with him and to be part of our family.”

High on Smullen’s list of accomplishments was his Derby double aboard Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in 2016, with O’Brien runners finishing second on both occasions.

“Pat beat us in two Derbys–he beat us at The Curragh and at Epsom,” O’Brien said. “We did everything in our power for that not to happen, but he had it worked out and had the power, the courage, the skill and the determination to make it happen. We’re so delighted that he experienced those days.”
