Another Kingman Rising Star As Monsoon Moon Delivers

Saturday’s Close Brothers Motor Finance EBF Stallions Fillies’ Novice S. looked there for the taking for Khalid Abdullah’s Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and the half-sister to last year’s G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was in uncompromising mood as she duly earned TDN Rising Star status over Newmarket’s mile. Always travelling strongly under Ryan Moore tracking the early pace, the 2-5 favourite who was third on debut behind TDN Rising Star Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) at Ascot a fortnight previously was still full of running when sent to the front two out. In total command from there, the grey was chased to the line by the fellow John Gosden-trained debutante Haija (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) but was 3 1/4-lengths too strong there as she in turned pulled seven lengths clear of Naflah (Fr) (Territories {Ire}). The latter had been four lengths adrift of Monsoon Moon at Ascot, putting a clear marker on the race in which Godolphin’s newcomer Sayyida (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the half-sister to Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), blew the start and finished last.

Gosden is understandably in no rush with the winner. “Monsoon Moon is a nice filly. She’s a big filly and she still needs to mature physically and mentally,” he said. “I don’t think we want to be launching into anything next and maybe she’ll have one more run this autumn. I don’t think she’ll go for the Fillies’ Mile and Ryan [Moore] didn’t feel it was the right thing to do for her right now.”

Alongside the aforementioned Logician, Hwt. 3yo-Eur at 14f+, Hwt. 3yo-Eng at 14f+, G1SW-Eng, $656,003, the other notable performer out of the listed-placed dam Scuffle (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) is the GIII Glens Falls S., GIII La Prevoyante H. and GIII The Very One S. winner and GI E. P. Taylor S. runner-up Suffused (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}), MGSW-US, GISP-Can & SP-Eng, $697,248. She has also thrown the listed-winning Collide (GB) by Logician’s sire Frankel, the listed-placed Battlement (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and the triple winner Sleep Walk (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) who is responsible for Friday’s Newbury scorer Lucid Dreamer (GB) (Dansili {GB}), another Juddmonte juvenile with Classic potential.

The second dam Tantina (Distant View) captured the seven-furlong Listed Sceptre S. giving three pounds and a five-length beating to the high-class Chic (GB) (Machiavellian), so it was no great surprise that she proved a high-class producer for this operation. Her G1 Dubai Duty Free-winning son Cityscape (GB) was followed by the G2 Temple S. winner and G1 July Cup runner-up Bated Breath (GB) who have both enjoyed success as sires. She is also the second dam of the G1 King’s Stand S. runner-up Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), while the third dam Didina (GB) (Nashwan) is the GII Dahlia H. winner. Her descendants include the G2 Gimcrack S. scorer Ajaya (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. and G3 Winter Hill S. winner Extra Elusive (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), while the fourth dam Didicoy (Danzig) is a half-sister to Juddmonte’s European champion 2-year-old colt of 1997 Xaar (GB). Scuffle’s yearling colt is by Time Test (GB), while her 2020 colt is a full-brother to Logician.

Half-Sister to Masar Debuts at Newmarket

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Saturday’s Insights features Sayyida (GB), a half-sister to Derby winner Masar (Ire).

2.00 Gowran Park, Mdn, €15,500, 2yo, f, 8fT
EYLARA (IRE) (Gleneagles {Ire}) takes the eye at the end of an emotional week for the Dermot Weld stable, being a half-sister to the talented Eziyra (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who was one of the last pattern-race winners ridden by Pat Smullen in the 2017 G3 KPMG Enterprise S. Also placed in the G1 Irish and Yorkshire Oaks and the G1 Hong Kong Vase, she hails from the excellent Aga Khan family of Enzeli (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}), Ebadiyla (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and Estimate (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}).

2.05 Newmarket, Novice, £8,000, 2yo, f, 8fT
SAYYIDA (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) debuts for the Godolphin-Charlie Appleby axis and is a fascinating prospect as a half-sister to the G1 Epsom Derby hero Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). The February-foaled daughter of the G2 UAE Derby heroine Khawlah  (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) has a significant benchmark to be measured against in Khalid Abdullah’s likely hot favourite Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the John Gosden-trained half-sister to the yard’s G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB})  who was such a promising third on debut behind TDN Rising Star Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) at Ascot earlier this month.

2.35 Saint-Cloud, Mdn, €22,000, unraced 2yo, c/g, 8fT
Ecki Sauren’s DJANGO UNCHAINED (FR) (Pastorius {Ger}) is yet another representative of trainer Henk Grewe’s regular Tours de France and faces one dozen fellow newcomers in this one-mile test. He is a half-brother to last term’s G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Django Freeman (Ger) (Campanolgist) and this term’s otherwise unbeaten Deutsches Derby sixth Dicaprio (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}).

3.50 Saint-Cloud, Mdn, €22,000, unraced 2yo, f, 8fT
George Strawbridge’s homebred MOONY (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), who is inevitably a Freddy Head trainee, is the fourth foal out of the owner-breeder’s MG1SW distaffer Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). She bids to become her dam’s first winner and is opposed by a baker’s dozen in this debutantes’ affair.

4.00 Newbury, Novice, £6,300, 2yo, 7fT
RIFLEMAN (IRE) (The Gurkha {Ire}) debuts for the Magnier/Tabor/Smith combination and the John Gosden stable and is the 15th foal produced by the $2-million G3 King George S. winner Dietrich (Storm Cat), with the previous best being the G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Aloft (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Among his rivals is Godfrey Wilson’s unraced homebred Run To Freedom (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}), a half-brother to the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup and G1 Diamond Jubilee-winning sire Twilight Son (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}) and group scorer Music Master (GB) (Piccolo {GB}) trained by their handler Henry Candy.

Mill Reef Takes Centre Stage On Saturday

Newbury’s G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. has been won by the sprinting luminaries Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) in recent times and Saturday’s renewal has some potential class acts lurking in the line-up for the six-furlong feature. Setting the standard is John Dance’s Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) following his third placing in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville on Aug. 23, but he has several unexposed rivals placing a target on him and will have to be every bit as good as he looked there to ward them off. They include King Power Racing’s highly-regarded four-length Sept. 3 Newcastle novice scorer Fivethousandtoone (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) from the Andrew Balding stable having its finest year to date. He was beaten 3/4 of a length on debut by Bahrain Pride (GB) (Kodiac {GB}) at Windsor on Aug. 17 and that rival re-opposes having subsequently doubled his tally a fortnight later in the Listed Ripon Champion Two Yrs Old Trophy. Shaikh Nasser Al Khalifa’s Line of Departure (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) beat the solid group performer Yazaman (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) comfortably in Doncaster’s Weatherbys Racing Bank £200,000 2-Y-O S. over 6 1/2 furlongs on Sept. 10 and could be open to further progress as a half-brother to Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}).

John Dance said, “We’ve been delighted with Rhythm Master and I’m very much looking forward to the race on Saturday. He was very green [at Deauville], particularly in the preliminaries. I don’t think he could believe he could see thousands of people, as there was obviously no crowd at Haydock–it was very much like the first day at school for him. I think the soft ground was a bit of a shock as well, so for him to run as well as he did was very encouraging and also left the impression that there’s hopefully more to come.”

Ed Crisford said of Bahrain Pride, “This has been the plan for him since Ripon. He’s in great form and deserves a crack at a Group 2. It does look a very strong race, but our fellow has done nothing wrong, I think he’s improving with racing and he deserves a crack at a higher grade now.” Andrew Balding has yet to win the race named after his father’s great and commented, “Fivethousandtoone won well at Newcastle and took the step forward we hoped he would after finishing second at Windsor. He is a horse that I think a lot of, but this is a competitive race in a much tougher grade. He has looked very good at home and his work has been impressive. Hopefully he can step forward again.”

At Ayr, where the QTS Ayr Gold Cup takes precedence as one of the leading sprint handicaps of the season, the Listed Jordan Electrics Doonside Cup sees Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum’s Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) enjoy a class drop following a break having last been seen finishing runner-up in the G1 Prince of Wales’s S. at Royal Ascot on June 17. The Mar. 21 G1 Ranvet S. and Apr. 11 G1 Queen Elizabeth S. winner encounters another top-level performer in need of a confidence boost in last year’s G1 Queen Anne S. hero Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper). Addeybb’s rider Tom Marquand is keen to renew his partnership with the 6-year-old and said, “He’s a cracking animal. Hopefully the ground doesn’t dry out too much. He certainly looks in good order at home. It’s probably a different path to Champions Day, but it’s perfect for him. He should have his conditions. A mile and a quarter on a galloping track, that’s what he wants. It was a well-spotted race by Willia [Haggas], perfect timing. Hopefully it will set him up nicely for the big day. He’s got the penalty, but he’s a dual Group 1 winner and hopefully he can overcome that.”

Flat Breeders Honoured At Virtual Event

The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association gave out 10 awards during a virtual edition of its Flat Breeders’ Awards Evening on Thursday.

Godolphin won four: the Queen’s Silver Cup for leading British-based breeder by prize money; the BBA Silver Cigar Box for leading British-based stallion by prize money (Dubawi {Ire}); the Barleythrope Stud Silver Cup for leading British-based stallion by individual winners (Dubawi); and the inaugural British European Breeders’ Fund Stallion Special Merit Award for Night Of Thunder (Ire).

European Breeders’ Fund Marketing Communications Manager Rachael Gowland said, “Night Of Thunder stood in Great Britain for two seasons and a significant portion of his winners and stakes horses have been in Great Britain. As a mid-price-range stallion, he caught breeders’ attention with a significant winners to runners percentage driven by talented offspring rather than sheer weight of numbers in 2019. The award is in its infancy and still developing but ultimately its purpose is to help showcase high-achieving stallions irrespective of book size and nomination fee.”

Cable Bay was awarded the Tattersalls Silver Salver as leading first-crop sire in 2019 by prizemoney; Dar Re Mi recorded back-to-back wins as Broodmare of the Year; Newsells Park Stud was Flat Breeder of the Year; Mick and Fiona Denniff received the TBA Silver Salver for Special Merit; and Bearstone Stud the Small Flat Breeder of the Year award. Jacques Prinsloo of Whitsbury Manor Stud received the Stud Employee Award.

TBA Chairman Julian Richmond-Watson said, “Although we have been unable to host our usual event, we are delighted to be able to recognise the achievements of British breeders from the 2019 flat racing season. My congratulations go to all of the nominees, winners and their supporting teams who have demonstrated such dedication to our industry. I would also like to thank all of our event supporters and sponsors this year for continuing their contribution to the British breeding industry.”

Weatherbys Chairmain Johnny Weatherby said, “We are absolutely delighted to support the TBA’s Flat Breeders’ Awards, and as a small breeder myself I am fully aware of the challenges that we all face, particularly in the current climate, and I whole heartedly congratulate this evening’s winners.”
