Johnny Murtagh to Train for HH The Aga Khan

Five-time Irish Champion Jockey Johnny Murtagh, who has been training since 2013, will join the roster of HH The Aga Khan’s trainers in Ireland, The Aga Khan Studs announced on Tuesday. Trainer of this season’s G1 Matron S. heroine Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}), Murtagh was stable jockey to John Oxx from 1992 until 2003 and rode many winners in the iconic green and red colours, among them English and Irish Derby hero Sinndar (Ire) (Grand Lodge). Murtagh was also retained jockey for His Highness The Aga Khan in 2011 and 2012 and was aboard 16 Group 1 winners in total for the organisation.

“We have watched Johnny’s training career develop over the last few years and undoubtedly 2020 has been a highly successful year for him,” said Pat Downes, manager of the Aga Khan Studs in Ireland. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to have him train for the Aga Khan Studs and we will be sending him some yearlings in the coming weeks. His Highness and Johnny have enjoyed some great days in the past together and hopefully there will be good days to look forward to in the future as well.”

“I am delighted to renew our partnership with H.H. the Aga Khan and his team,” said Murtagh. “A hugely successful owner-breeder operation worldwide, I look forward to receiving his draft of yearlings here at Fox Covert Stables and hopefully many winners to come, to add to our great association together.”

Floors Stud Dispersal At Tattersalls December

The Tattersalls December Mares Sale will feature a partial dispersal of the stock from the late Duke of Roxburghe’s Floors Stud. The offering of seven mares and seven foals will be consigned by Lord and Lady Lloyd Webber’s Kiltinan Castle Stud.

Floors Stud’s Classic winner and multiple stakes producer Attraction (GB) was in the spotlight at the recent Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, with she and her daughter Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) both having provided seven-figure colts during Book 1, and two half-sisters to Attraction and their foals feature among the dispersal. Those are the 12-year-old Federation (GB) (Motivator {GB}), in foal to Starspangledbanner (Aus), and her fifth foal, a Lope De Vega (Ire) filly; and the 10-year-old Fusion (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), who is not in foal. Her Siyouni (Fr) colt foal will also be sold.

Seven-year-old listed-placed Hibiscus (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will be an attractive offering as a full-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty (Ire) and a half to this year’s listed-winning Onassis (Ire) in foal to Siyouni. They are out of the Classic-placed Jacqueline Quest (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Hibiscus has a Lope De Vega colt foal that will be offered.

Twitch (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) is a Group 3-placed daughter of another Floors foundation mare, Comic (Ire) (Be My Chief), who will be offered in foal to Magna Grecia (Ire). Deep Inside (Fr) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) is a three-quarter sister to stakes winner and producer Chrysanthemum (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and she is offered carrying her second foal, by Lope De Vega.

Lady Glinka (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) from the family of Sir Percy (GB) will be offered in-foal to Time Test (GB), while Merry Jaunt (Street Sense), a daughter of Grade I winner Light Jig (GB) (Danehill) and a half-sister to Grade I winner Seek Again (Speightstown) will be offered in foal to Night Of Thunder (Ire). Their Zoffany (Ire) filly and Australia (GB) colt, respectively, will also be offered.

The septet of foals are completed by a Time Test filly who is a half-sister to the Group 2-placed Counterclaim (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and an Invincible Spirit (Ire) filly who is closely related to Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

“The late Duke of Roxburghe was a passionate and hugely successful owner/breeder and left a lasting legacy which was never more obvious than at Book 1 of the recent October Yearling Sales where two of the six Floors yearlings sold for more than one million guineas,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “As with so many dispersals it is tinged with sadness, but we are proud that Tattersalls has been entrusted with the Floors Stud partial dispersal and confident that it will be amongst the highlights of Europe’s premier foal and breeding stock sale.”

Tattersalls Ireland Moves Sales to December

The remaining 2020 Tattersalls Ireland sales have been postponed to December after the Irish government moved the country to Level 5 COVID-19 restrictions on Monday evening. The November National Hunt Sale will be held on Dec. 12-14. The November Flat Foal & Breeding Stock Sale, including a yearling section, is now set for Dec. 16, and the Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale will be conducted on Dec. 17. The three sales were originally slated for Nov. 9-13.

“In these uncertain times we must plan as best as we can for further sales and ensure we provide the most vibrant marketplace possible for our clients,” said Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell. “We trust that the increased Level 5 restrictions for the next six weeks will meet the government’s objective and allow us to host our remaining sales in December.”

Goffs Moves November Foal, Breeding Stock Sales to December

In light of the Level 5 COVID-19 restrictions announced by the Irish government on Monday, Goffs has been forced to shift most of its autumn sales calendar.

The heightened restrictions mean it will not be legally permitted to hold sales at Kildare Paddocks from Oct. 21 to Dec. 2. After consultation with the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association and Tattersalls, new dates were selected for the Goffs November Foal and Breeding Stock Sales that will allow attendees to be at Tattersalls and observe the two-week Irish quarantine rules. The November Foal Sale, originally scheduled for Nov. 16 to 18, will now be held from Dec. 18 to 20. The Breeding Stock Sale will follow on Dec. 21.

The Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale will be moved from Nov. 4 and 5 to Jan. 12 and 13. The Goffs Autumn HIT Sale will remain on Nov. 5 as a live online auction. The December National Hunt Sale will also remain on its original dates of Dec. 9 and 10.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Like much of the rest of the country, we did not anticipate a move straight to Level 5 but we fully respect the decision and objectives of the government and understand that, in this timeframe, it would not be responsible to attempt to hold a sale. Therefore, in consultation this morning with the ITBA and Tattersalls, we reviewed every sale and selected what we believe is the best possible alternative to maximise the success for each category.

“Rescheduling the market-leading Goffs November Sale to December will allow sufficient time for buyers and vendors to quarantine for two weeks following the Tattersalls December Sales. Our December National Hunt Sale falls after the current six-week lockdown period and therefore remains on its original scheduled dates.

“[The] Goffs Autumn Horses-In-Training Sale also remains on its original date, Nov. 5, but will be a fully online sale with a live auctioneer and bidding via Goffs Online and by phone. The Autumn Yearling Sale will be pushed back to January 2021. This sale is heavily reliant on overseas investment and it is hoped that a number of countries will have been added to the Irish government’s Green List for travel by that stage, allowing key overseas buyers to attend.”
