Tattersalls Releases December Mares Catalogue

Beach Frolic (GB) (Nayef), Lady Gorgeous (GB) (Compton Place {GB}) and Miss Phillyjinks (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), all Group 1 producers in 2020, are among the standouts in this year’s Tattersalls December Mares Sale, for which the catalogue was released on Thursday. There are over 100 stakes winners and producers catalogued, and mares in foal to 22 of the current top 25 active British and Irish sires.

The four-day sale will take place at Park Paddocks in Newmarket from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 and feature 1,104 broodmares and fillies and mares in and out of training.

The 9-year-old Beach Frolic (lot 1731) is the dam of this year’s standout 3-year-old miler Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}), winner of the G1 St James’s Palace S. and the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois. The unraced Beach Frolic is herself a half-sister to G2 Dante S. winner Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and G2 Windsor Forest S. and G3 Musidora S. scorer Joviality (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), and she is offered by Highclere Stud carrying a member of the first crop of champion sprinter Blue Point (Ire). Beach Frolic is one of nine mares catalogued in foal to Blue Point, and those also include the Grade I-placed Strathnaver (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) (lot 1649) and Daily Times (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) (lot 1675), a winning half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Beach Frolic’s yearling colt by Highland Reel (Ire) sold for 320,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 1.

Lady Gorgeous (lot 1740) produced this year’s G1 Fillies’ Mile winner Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}), and she is also responsible for the listed-winning Alwaab (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}). The 11-year-old Lady Gorgeous is offered by Norelands Stud in foal to No Nay Never.

Miss Phillyjinks (lot 1736) is the dam of recent G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Tiger Tanaka (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), who was her first foal, and she is offered by Kellsgrange Stud in foal to Mehmas (Ire). Dulkashe (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 1605), dam of G1 Coronation Cup and G2 Hardwicke S. winner Defoe (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), is offered in foal to Churchill (Ire).

Four lots ahead of him, G1 Melbourne Cup winner Rekindling (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) (lot 1504) will go through the ring.

“The Tattersalls December Sale is Europe’s premier breeding stock sale, and this year’s catalogue, which features the final part of the Waddesdon Stud Dispersal and the partial dispersal from Floors Stud, has quality in abundance,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “The December Sale is the annual showcase for the very best breeding stock that Europe has to offer and is a sale which exerts an extraordinary influence on the global Thoroughbred industry. The 2020 catalogue has outstanding consignments from many of the world’s leading owner/breeders and those buyers unable to make their annual pilgrimage to the sale will again be able to use the Tattersalls live internet bidding platform and telephone bidding facilities which have been a huge asset since we have been conducting sales under strict COVID-related rules and regulations.”

This season’s G3 Anglesey S. winner A Case Of You (Ire) (Hot Streak {Ire}) (lot 1153C) is among seven wildcards added to next week’s Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale. Also among the 2-year-old wildcards are Ascot Adventure (GB) (Mayson {GB}) (lot 746B), a winner at Cork in his lone start, and the filly Choice And Chance (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) (lot 334B), a winner at Fairyhouse on Sept. 21 and a descendant of the influential broodmare Coup de Folie.

Without Parole Retired To Newsells Park Stud

G1 St James’s Palace S. winner Without Parole (GB) (Frankel {GB}-Without You Babe, by Lemon Drop Kid) has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2021 at Newsells Park Stud.

Campaigned as a homebred by John and Tanya Gunther, Without Parole won his lone start at two by six lengths for John Gosden and went unbeaten through his first three starts at three, winning Sandown’s Listed Heron S. before taking the St James’s Palace in the second-fastest mile ever run at Ascot and with Group 1 winners Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and U S Navy Flag (War Front) in his wake.

Without Parole made two starts at four before joining trainer Chad Brown in the U.S. He was third in last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Mile on his American debut and picked up two more Grade I placings over the past year, including a third in the Shadwell Turf Mile on Oct. 3.

Without Parole is a half-brother to GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz (Speightstown), who has four first-crop winners in the U.S. from 21 foals. Their dam, Without You Babe, is a half-sister to GI Travers S. and GI Cigar Mile winner Stay Thirsty (Bernardini) and she has also produced the listed-winning She’s Got You (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

“Without Parole has given me the most memorable and exciting day of my life with his victory in the St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot,” said John Gunther. “It was my biggest dream come true and I continue to be overwhelmed by the heart and perseverance he has shown with his racing pursuits in America. He has raced in 12 consecutive Grade Is and faced myriad traffic obstructions, at times unsuitable turf conditions and he just never gives up, as demonstrated again by his third-place finish in the prestigious Shadwell Turf Mile. I love this horse and can’t wait to breed to him.”

Newsells Park Stud General Manager Julian Dollar added, “We’re delighted to be standing Without Parole at Newsells Park. It’s no secret that we, like virtually every other global stallion operation, chased this horse hard after his impressive win at Royal Ascot and it’s fitting he should now retire to the stud where he was born and raised. Without Parole is a beautiful horse with an athletic physique and superb conformation. As his race record states, he’s an out-and-out miler who possesses a great turn of foot. Importantly, he has a potent, proven sire’s pedigree, which should offer breeders plenty of options. He’ll certainly be heavily supported by Newsells Park and of course his Eclipse award-winning breeders, John and Tanya Gunther.”

Siskin Targeting Breeders’ Cup

Khalid Abdullah’s Siskin (First Defence) is aiming at a run in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7, provided ground conditions suit.

“The Breeders’ Cup Mile is under serious consideration,” Juddmonte Racing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe told the TDN. “We’re concerned about two things: one is the amount of rain that’s fallen in Kentucky the last few days; we know he’s a horse that’s best on fast ground so that’s one concern. The other concern is if they continue to race on the turf track leading up to the Breeders’ Cup, if that will impact on the track adversely.

“Those are the main considerations but at the moment the horse is in good form and is aiming towards Keeneland.”

Siskin, the winner of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the G1 Phoenix S., is trained by Ger Lyons, who indicated on Nick Luck’s Daily podcast on Wednesday that the horse would be retired at the end of this campaign and stand at stud in Japan. Grimthorpe declined to comment on stud plans. Siskin’s breeding rights were sold in June to an undisclosed group of breeders, with Juddmonte retaining racing rights.

From the immediate family of sires Xaar (GB) and Bated Breath (GB), Siskin was unbeaten in four starts at two last year. After his Curragh Classic score in June Siskin was third in the G1 Sussex S. and fourth in the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp after missing the break in the latter.
