Goffs UK Stages Autumn Sales

Goffs UK staged a pair of sales at its Doncaster headquarters on Thursday: the Autumn Horses-in-Training & Autumn Yearling Sales and the Silver Yearling Sale, which was amalgamated with the Autumn sales for 2020 due to the rescheduling necessitated by COVID-19. The Autumn Sale also had a new look in 2020 due to the movement of the point-to-point and form horse session to its own dedicated sale later in the calendar, and as such comparisons with last year are insignificant.

An offering of 129 horses in training kicked off proceedings, with the Philip Hobbs-trained jumper Crooks Peak (GB) (Arcadio {Ger}) (lot 131) leading the way when bought by Ryan Mahon for £36,000. Sir Robert Ogden’s 4-year-old filly Arctic Fox (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) (lot 73), a three-time winner, was bought by Martin Todhunter for £25,000. In all, 97 were sold during the horses in training portion for an aggregate of £519,200, an average of £5,353 and a median of £3,500.

The Silver Yearling Sale saw 51 offered, with 32 selling for £148,600. The average was £4,644 and the median £4,150. A filly by War Command (lot 208) led the way, having been bought by Tony Coyle and David Bishop for £12,000. She is the first foal out of Bridge Poseidon (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a six-time winning half-sister to Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Brusque (Canaveral). Colts by Mondialiste (Ire) and Pride of Dubai (Aus) each fetched £10,000.

The Autumn yearlings portion of the sale was topped by a first-crop daughter of Overbury Stud’s G1 Irish Derby and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic winner Jack Hobbs; lot 302 was selected by Ian Pallas for £15,000. A quartet made £10,000: colts by Swiss Spirit (GB) and Cable Bay (Ire), and fillies by Outstrip (GB) and Territories (Ire). In all, 49 were offered as part of the Autumn yearling sale, with 31 sold for £125,600, an average of £4,052 and a median of £2,000.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “This year’s Autumn Sale was very different to previous years with the addition of the Silver Yearling Sale and the absence of a point-to-point/form horse session. The Silver Yearling Sale is usually held in conjunction with the Premier Yearling Sale but due to the altered sales calendar we were forced to incorporate it into today’s sale.

“A decision was also made to remove the sale’s traditional point-to-point/form horse session and instead offer those horses in a new dedicated sale–the first of the autumn for 2020. As such we have introduced the November P2P Sale which, due to new government restrictions in Doncaster, will now be held at Yorton Farm Stud on Nov. 11.

“The changes above make direct comparisons very difficult, but we were satisfied with the level of trade achieved today as we exist to sell horses and that is exactly what we have done. We would therefore like to thank all of our clients for their participation today and wish buyers the best of luck with their new purchases.”

Face Coverings Mandatory at British Race Fixtures

In an effort to further enhance existing COVID-19 control measures, all racecourse attendees at behind closed doors race fixtures will be required to wear a face covering at all times while at the beginning Monday, Oct. 26. Face coverings (i.e. non-medical face coverings) must be worn at the racecourse by all attendees who are not identified as needing certified/higher grade PPE (e.g. medical and cleaning staff).

Face coverings will be required in all indoor and outdoor areas of both the Green Zone and Owner Zone throughout the day. For more information on BHA’s COVID-19 protocols, click here.

Attendees must also continue to follow existing infection control requirements, including avoiding close contact and socially distancing in line with government guidance and BHA protocols.

“Our behind closed doors model and the vigilance of our participants and officials has enabled racing to return safely, with no evidence of transmission of Covid-19 on the racecourse,” said Dr. Jerry Hill, the BHA’s Chief Medical Adviser. “Even in the period since resumption, there has been a growing scientific consensus that, when used correctly, face coverings can help to reduce the spread of coronavirus droplets.

“They provide an additional layer of infection control which, used alongside other essential measures like frequent handwashing and strict social distancing, can help racing reduce our risk of transmission and safeguard our industry from the virus.

“With cases rising across the country and more areas subject to local lockdowns and restrictions, we believe that making face coverings compulsory for all attendees–except, of course, where exemptions apply–is a sensible and necessary precaution to bolster our existing protocols and help keep everyone safe”.

Clearance Remains High At Arqana

DEAUVILLE, France—The prices may have dipped significantly at Arqana on the Thursday but the activity at the sales grounds did not. If anything there were more people in attendance than on previous days, with the boost in French 2-year-old premiums to 70% perhaps acting as an incentive for owners to take a chance on a prospect for next season.

Certainly buyers were out in force and the clearance rate climbed again for this third tier of the sale, though it has to be said that not many below the top 20 lots of the day would have made any kind of profit for their breeder once nominations, keep fees and sales expenses have been taken into account. That said, if you breed a horse in France, even if the sales price is not profitable there is always the chance that the horse keeps earning for you through breeders’ premiums.

One of the joint top-lots of the day (635) from Haras de Grandcamp is off to race in Poland, where his half-sister Furia (Fr) (Campanologist) won the Oaks among her five 3-year-old victories. Daniela Nowara signed the ticket for the son of Mastercraftsman (Ire) out of the G2 Prix Corrida winner Fair Breeze (Ger) (Silvano {Ger}) on behalf of his new owner at €42,000.

The same price was bid by Victor Langlais of Langlais Bloodstock and Ludovic Gadbin for lot 640, Haras de la Haie Neuve’s son of the first-season War Front stallion Whitecliffsofdover. His dam Flute Divine (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) was herself a winner at two and has produced the four-time winner and former breezer Another Planet (Fr) (Cockney Rebel {GB}).

The shortest session of the week so far saw 87 of the 105 yearlings offered find a buyer, at a clearance rate of 83%. Turnover was €1,221,500, the average price was €14,040 and median €13,000.

With another short session still to come on Friday, the aggregate for the sale as a whole to date stands at €16,919,500, a sum which is closing in on last year’s tally, albeit from a rather different sale format.
