Mishriff To Return To Turf In The Sheema Classic

Saudi Cup winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) will make his next appearance in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic on Dubai World Cup night at Meydan on Mar. 27, Racing Post reports. After winning the world's richest race in his second try on the dirt, the 4-year-old Mishriff had been considered a leading candidate for the $12-million G1 Dubai World Cup, but he will instead return to the turf for the $6-million Sheema Classic and step up to a mile and a half for the first time. Mishriff won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano last summer.

Trainer John Gosden told Racing Post, “This morning we've accepted an invitation for Mishriff to run in the Dubai Sheema Classic. He's a versatile horse and we've always wanted to try him over this trip of a mile and a half. This will then give him plenty of time for a break before tackling Royal Ascot in June and the Eclipse S. at Sandown the following month.”

Minzaal Recovering From Injury

Last season's G2 Gimcrack S. winner and G1 Middle Park S. third Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) will make a belated start to his 3-year-old campaign after suffering a leg injury in his box at trainer Owen Burrows's stable.

“Unfortunately Minzaal injured himself in his box before Christmas,” said Burrows. “He's had to have surgery and he's back at [owner] Shadwell at the moment recuperating.”

The first key target for Minzaal's 3-year-old campaign had been the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, but Burrows admitted it will be a race against time now.

“Whether or not he'll make Ascot will be just determined on how he progresses now. It's a shame,” the trainer said. “He must have banged a hind leg and has had a couple of chips removed off his hocks. Obviously the Commonwealth Cup was the plan. There's still a small chance. God willing, we'll have him back at some stage this year.”

Burrows is looking forward to another Shadwell colourbearer, last year's King George V S. and G3 Geoffrey Freer S. scorer Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), in 2021. He said of the 4-year-old, “He's back with me and looks to have done well over the winter. He's an exciting horse for us all. I have plans in my head, but nothing concrete as such yet.”

Study Of Man Foal In Kentucky

Singing Sweetly (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) gave birth to a filly foal by Study Of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) at Stone Farm, Kentucky earlier this week. The filly is from the first crop of the Lanwades-based stallion, who won the G1 Qipco Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly in 2018.

The former Coolmore-owned Singing Sweetly was purchased by James Delahooke, on behalf of Bobby Flay, at last year's Arqana Breeding Stock Sale from Haras des Capucines for €125,000.

“She's an excellent first foal–well balanced, correct and plenty of bone. A lot of quality to both the mare and the foal,” said Stone Farm's Lynn Hancock. “I don't think there will be too many Study Of Man foals born in the U.S. this year. But he was a very talented racehorse, by Deep Impact, and this filly is an excellent model. It's pretty cool to have some Sunday Silence blood back on the farm as well.”

Flay confirmed that the mare will be bred to Violence (Medaglia d'Oro) this season. “Violence is one of the young stallions I'm very bullish on. He's had a few crops and is proving to be successful long, short, dirt and grass,” said Flay. “He fits this mare since her pedigree is both European and American. Violence gives her a great shot at producing a fast horse.”

Violence, sire of Volatile, No Parole and Dr. Schivel, will stand at Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa this season for $25,000.

Japanese Horse of the Year Jungle Pocket Dead at 23

Japanese Horse of the Year Jungle Pocket (Jpn) (Tony Bin {Ire}-Dance Charmer, by Nureyev) passed away at Breeders' Stallion Station in Japan, Tokyo-Sports reported on Tuesday. The grandson of GII Del Mar Debutante S. heroine Skillful Joy (Nodouble) was 23.

Bred by Northern Farm and campaigned by Katsumi Yoshida, the May foal won two of three starts at two including the Sapporo Sansai S. in September of 2000 before a second-place finish in the Radio Tampa Hai Sansai S. Back in the winner's circle in the Kyodo News Service Hai, he was third in the Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) before rebounding to take the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) in May of 2001. Only third in the Sapporo Kinen that August and fourth in the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) that October, he claimed his Group 1 in the Japan Cup by a neck over T.M. Opera O (Jpn) (Opera House {GB}) that November. He was named Japanese Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old of 2001.

Shelved until March of his 4-year-old year, Jungle Pocket ran second in the G2 Hanshin Daishoten and filled the same spot in the Tenno Sho (Spring) in April. His final two runs were off-the-board finishes at Nakayama in the G1 Japan Cup and G1 Arima Kinen. The Katsumi Yoshida colourbearer was retired to stand at Shadai Stallion Station with a mark of 13-5-3-2 and $5,788,198 in earnings.

Besides standing at Shadai in the Northern Hemisphere, he moved to the Breeders' Stallion Station in 2013 and also shuttled to Rich Hill Stud in New Zealand for a few seasons. He sired 29 black-type winners, 16 of them at the group level. Among his best progeny were Group 1 winners Tosen Jordan (Jpn), Aventura (Jpn), Queen Spumante (Jpn), Jaguar Mail (Jpn) and Jungle Rocket (NZ). As a broodmare sire, Jungle Pocket's daughters have foaled 10 black-type winners, six at the group level. Although he does not have a Group 1 winner in that sphere yet, Group 2 winner Mikki Swallow (Jpn) (Tosen Homareboshi {Jpn}) ran third in the G1 Tenno Sho (Spring) and fellow Group 2 winner Solveig (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) was third in the G1 Sprinters S.
