£6-Million In Prizemoney At Royal Ascot

Prizemoney for Royal Ascot in 2021-set for June 15 to 19-will be £6-million, a 66% increase on 2020. Ascot Racecourse also revealed on Tuesday that the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. in July will be worth £875,000, up from £400,000 in 2020 when purses took a massive hit in the midst of the pandemic.

Guy Henderson, chief executive officer at Ascot Racecourse, said, “In 2020 we had hoped to offer record prize money of more than £8-million at the Royal Meeting. In the event the pandemic made that impossible and we have now spent nearly a year racing behind closed doors with trading income down 80%. This year's prizemoney of £6-million represents 75% of what we had originally planned for 2020.

“With restricted attendances in 2021 and pandemic insurance cover no longer available, the business will need to absorb a significant loss this year in order to deliver our wish to support the industry with the most prize money that we can prudently afford. Whilst Covid-19 has knocked back our long term financial trajectory by several years, our aim is to make the largest steps we can towards getting prize money levels back on track as soon as possible.

“Without owners we would have no racing. We are very grateful for their commitment and thank them for their support. We look forward to being able to increase prize money further as soon as it is possible for us to do so. We are also very grateful to our official partners, QIPCO and Longines, as well as our official suppliers, sponsors, broadcast partners and betting media partners. All of their support is deeply appreciated. We at Ascot much look forward to being able to welcome back our racegoers in June and delivering a special week of racing, both for those who are able to be with us on site and the many millions who will be with us in spirit through our broadcast and digital channels.”

John and Thady Gosden to Share Licence Beginning This Season

Champion trainer John Gosden will train with his son, Thady, under a shared licence as soon as the younger Gosden's papers are approved by the British Horseracing Authority. Thady completed his training modules at the British Racing school and the duo's joint tenure is set to begin at Clarehaven this season. The news was confirmed to the Racing Post and was suggested on the TDN Writers' Room podcast on Feb 23.

“I'm lucky I have a son, Thaddeus who's very interested,” Gosden, who will be 70 this month, said on the podcast. “I have a great team working around me. I'm just very keen over the next two or three years to see the baton passed over, if you like. We're allowed now in this country to train two people on a licence like they do in Australia…Then hopefully by the time two or three years down the road, they simply won't need me around anymore.”

Lord North Bound For Dubai Turf

Group 1 winner Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) will step forward in the G1 Dubai Turf over 1800 metres on Mar. 27, Racing Post reported on Monday. Trainer John Gosden accepted an invitation for the race for the Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing colourbearer. A winner of the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. last June, the bay was third in the G1 Juddmonte Internatioanl S. a month later. Unplaced in the G1 QIPCO Champion S. on Oct. 17, he was a solid fourth in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf on Nov. 7. Gosden will also be sending Saudi Cup winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) for the G1 Sheema Classic.

“Lord North has been invited to run in the Dubai Turf and he seems in good form at home so the plan would be for he and Mishriff to travel,” trainer John Gosden told the Racing Post. “Lord North goes well fresh and Mishriff seems to have come out of his Saudi Cup win in good shape, so it's all systems go for World Cup night.”

Striding For More Launched on International Women’s Day

The initiative 'Striding For More' was launched by Women In Racing on International Women's Day, Mar. 8. Its aim is to celebrate the vast range of roles occupied by women in the sport through a series of videos that feature 10 women from across the sport after working with Great British Racing and other industry groups. Some of the featured women include jockey Hollie Doyle, Aintree clerk of the course Sulekha Varma, broadcaster Alex Hammond, BHA raceday starter Sophia Upton, and history-making Khadijah Mellah.

“You can never have too many role models,” Women In Racing Chair Tallulah Lewis told Sky Sports Racing. “It's something we try to focus on, shedding a light on the fact that women are making up more than half of our industry–and doing every role out there.

“We all know how well role models work–and if you see someone in a position, and you relate to them, then you are more likely to push yourself to succeed.”
