Paterson Inducted Into Aintree Hall Of Fame

Late Aintree Chairman Rose Paterson, who died last June, was on Saturday inducted as an Aintree Legend. She joins distinguished figures from the jumps racing world including Ginger McCain, Sir Peter O'Sullevan and Jenny Pitman.

Paterson's husband Owen Paterson, MP for North Shropshire, announced the launch of the Rose Paterson Trust, which will raise funds for suicide prevention causes.

“For us it's just a very sad day,” he said. “Normally we'd have come in early and we'd have walked the course and she'd be picking out all the details, and she's not here. But what we've done–and I pay massive tribute to my three children–we've set up the Rose Paterson Trust. Our very simple aim is to raise money for suicide prevention and to publicise that in the next 90 minutes someone will take their life–which is nearly 15 jumbo jets per year. We feel very strongly that this should be talked about more and if we can possibly prevent one single family going through the extreme anguish that we went through.

“The reaction of racing has been quite extraordinary and I'd like to thank everyone who has pledged so far. We will put the money forward to projects and charities which we hope will prevent suicide and might just save that one family.

“Could I thank you all very much for the immensely kind reaction to what's happened. We look forward to coming back for future years and we'll be very proud to see Rose sitting proudly on the wall as an Aintree Legend.”

Manor House Stables Partners With NAF

Michael Owen and Andrew Black's Manor House Stables has partnered with equine nutrition and care product supplier NAF as an official yard sponsor.

“As a former elite sportsman, I am fully aware of the fine margins that can be the difference between success and failure,” said Owen. “In the same way that footballers need to get the right nutritional balance between fuel and hydration for optimum performance, it's important that horses get the right balance too. This is why I am delighted to welcome NAF onboard as a main sponsor at Manor House Stables. With over 30 years' experience, they are leaders in their field and I look forward to a successful partnership both on and off the track.”

Sammy Martin, NAF Racing Manager, added “I am thrilled that we are in the position of being able to announce an official partnership with Manor House Stables. They are focused on ensuring that each and every horse receives the five-star care and support that they require from the day that they arrive on the yard as a youngster all the way through to their first visit to a racecourse and beyond. The hands on approach adopted by both ourselves and the entire team at the yard will of course be critical to the success of the partnership and we are truly excited to follow the progress of all of the horses whilst being available to share our knowledge and help the horses deliver every time.”

Watson Wins Trainers’ Championship

Doug Watson earned his seventh UAE trainers' championship at Al Ain Racecourse on Friday evening, claiming the victory with 40 wins-one more than three-time champion Ernst Oertel, despite his yard being compromised by a COVID outbreak early in the season. Watson now stands alone as the trainer to have won the most UAE training titles; he was previously tied with Satish Seemar on six.

“We have such a great team at home, both the owners and the staff,” Watson said. “They have been fantastic and everyone works seven days a week and we went through the COVID situation and thankfully everyone's okay from that and things have gone well [since]. It was tough right down to the wire.”

Highlights for Watson's Red Stables for the season included two wins on Super Saturday: Midnight Sands (Speightstown) in the G3 Burj Nahaar and Canvassed (Ire) (Shamardal) in the G3 Mahaab Al Shimaal.

“I just really want to thank our team and especially Dion McFadden and all of the people who helped saddle our horses when we couldn't. We missed two weeks with COVID and then weren't able to attend the races the third week when our horses could finally run. None of us could go, but we got a few wins there and one day we even had 19 horses running up the [Jebel Ali Racecourse] hill. It was a great team effort.”

Award, Trust Launched In Paterson’s Honour

The Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award and the Rose Paterson Trust will be launched in honour of the late Aintree Chairman Rose Paterson, who died last June.

Paterson's daughter Evie Paterson shared the news while introducing the sixth annual Aintree Grand Women's Summit, which was held via Zoom. The theme was Sport and Mental Health: A Powerful Relationship.

Evie Paterson said, “It shouldn't be me here at all; it should be my mother. She always did the introductions to the Grand Women's Summit so beautifully and so gracefully, and I cannot hope to fill her shoes. What I can do is say a few words about her legacy. It is easy to forget what a novel initiative the Grand Women's Summit was when it was set up, and even now remains a fairly unique event in the racing calendar. As the first female chairman of a National Hunt racecourse, she herself understood what it was like to operate in a man's world and was passionate about helping women succeed in racing and sport more broadly.

“I would also like to touch on Aintree's ties with the Merseyside community. She [Rose] understood that Aintree and the Grand National belonged to Liverpool, and did a huge amount to forge and strength the links between the racecourse and Merseyside. To bring all these aspects of her legacy together, we are launching the Rose Paterson Community Sportswoman Award. This will be an annual award given by Aintree to recognise a girl or woman from Merseyside who is making a difference to grassroots community sport, through participation or support. We want to reward girls and women, sportspeople or otherwise, who display the qualities that my mother possessed in abundance–perseverance, selflessness, devotion and inclusiveness.”

The Rose Paterson Trust, to aid suicide prevention, will be launched on Saturday, Grand National Day at Aintree.
