Cable Bay’s Dragon Symbol A New Rising Star

Unbeaten on the all-weather with three wins at Wolverhampton, Newcastle and Kempton coming by a combined margin of 12 1/2 lengths since the start of March, Yoshiro Kubota's Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {GB}) made his first turf start an impressive one to earn TDN Rising Star status at Hamilton on Sunday. Sent off the 11-8 favourite to transform that prowess to the grass in the valuable MansionBet Best Odds Guaranteed EBF Tangerine Trees Conditions S., the Archie Watson-trained grey raced keenly tracking the early pace dropping back to five furlongs for the first time. In front passing the two-furlong pole, the grey did his familiar thing and went clear from there to register a 3 1/4-length verdict over the solid yardstick Significantly (GB) (Garswood {GB}). Jockey Adam McNamara was impressed. “He travelled really well considering five is probably a bit sharp for him,” he said of sire Cable Bay's first 'TDN Rising Star'. “I don't think he's ever galloped on grass at home, but Archie's horses are so straightforward it doesn't matter. He's in the [June 15] G1 King's Stand [at Royal Ascot] and I'm not sure where he'll go, but I'd hazard a guess and say he's more likely to go to the [G1] Commonwealth [Cup at Royal Ascot June 18]. He keeps improving somehow and is a very good one. I got a lead, as he was a little bit keen in front for Oisin [Murphy] the last day and he travelled beautifully. I galloped him a couple of months ago and said to Archie he could be an 85 horse, but he keeps finding and he looks a very good one. He's going to win a big one very soon, hopefully. It's not every day you get to ride one like that.” The winner is the first foal out of a half-sister to the listed-winning duo Smart Enough (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) and Oasis Dancer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) whose dam is the G1 Prix Saint-Alary third Good Enough (Fr) (Mukaddamah). She is also the second dam of the recent Listed Sean Barrett Bloodstock S. winner Laugh a Minute (GB) (Mayson {GB}), who was also placed in the G3 Prix de Meautry and G3 Chipchase S., and this stable's Endless Joy (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) who was third in the G3 Firth of Clyde S. The dam, who also hails from the family of the G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Seazun (Ire) (Zieten), has a 2-year-old filly by Postponed (Ire) and a yearling colt by Adaay (Ire).

Broome Headlines Monday Sport

The Curragh is all action on Monday, with the G2 Coolmore Sottsass Irish EBF Mooresbridge S. the key component of a fascinating card. Aidan O'Brien has opted to wait longer to unleash Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and instead puts forward the reinvigorated Broome (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who looks to be in a good place this year with wins on soft ground in the Listed Devoy S. at Naas Mar. 28 and on a much slicker surface in the Apr. 17 G3 Alleged S. over this 10-furlong trip. Beaten around half a length when fourth in the 2019 G1 Epsom Derby, the bay who races in the Masaaki Matsushima silks is on his way back to that kind of level and even gets three pounds from the reigning G1 Melbourne Cup hero Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). That contest follows the Listed Gain First Flier S. for juveniles, where another Ballydoyle representative is the likely favourite in the impressive Apr. 10 Dundalk maiden winner Cadamosto (Ire) (No Nay Never). He encounters Donnacha's similarly taking Apr. 20 Tipperary scorer Elliptic (Ire) who looks to provide Caravaggio with his first black-type winner.

Also on the card is the seven-furlong G3 Coolmore Stud Circus Maximus Irish EBF Athasi S., where last year's G1 Matron S. heroine Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) makes her keenly-anticipated return in the Teruya Yoshida colours. Racing under a five-pound penalty, she also has a hefty extra 12-pound weight-for-age burden taking on another notable Rosegreen runner in the five-length course-and-distance maiden winner Queen's Speech (American Pharoah). Trainer Johnny Murtagh is aware of the task facing Champers Elysees and said, “It can be difficult with a penalty, but it's a good starting place for her. She's strengthened up and there's a big year ahead for her. There are a few nice fillies' races and we're looking forward to Royal Ascot with her. We're not sure which race yet. We'll have to see how tomorrow goes.”

Over the same trip is the Listed Dick McCormick Irish EBF Tetrarch S., where Zhang Yuesheng's Ace Aussie (Ire) (Australia {GB}) reappears having been just 1 1/2 lengths off Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) when runner-up in the Listed Ballylinch Stud 2000 Guineas Trial over this distance at Leopardstown Apr. 11.

1000 Guineas Glory For Zoffany’s Mother Earth

In a renewal of Newmarket's G1 Qipco 1000 Guineas which polarised the dreamers and the cynics, experience ultimately told on Sunday with Frankie Dettori the chief benefactor as he steered Mother Earth (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) to glory. Whereas Ballydoyle's Santa Barbara (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) had created all the electricity in the build-up to a Classic which lost some key cast members along the way, it was the stable's hard-working journeywoman who nestled under the radar and emerged clear-best to uphold the prime formlines of 2020. Successful in the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies' Sprint S. and third in the course-and-distance G1 Fillies' Mile before ending up second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, Derrick Smith's colour-bearer was an over-generous 10-1 shot boasting the second-highest official rating in this field. Switched off towards the rear early racing on the far side, the bay arrived full of running out wide to take the lead 1 1/2 furlongs from the finish as Santa Barbara had an understandable moment of greenness. As the field drove to the line spread across the track, Mother Earth was already gone beyond recall to give O'Brien a seventh renewal and fifth since 2016. A length second was Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who denied Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) by a neck with the 5-2 joint-favourite Santa Barbara nosed out in fourth.

A fourth 1000 Guineas for Dettori means that between the winning riders of the two weekend Classics there is a grand total of 104 years. Like Saturday's hero Kevin Manning, Frankie has a wealth of experience which is invaluable in these clashes and he was in typically ebullient form as he celebrated his 20th Classic victory. “Come on the oldies. We can still do it!” he said. “Aidan gave me a lot of confidence. I rode her cold, followed Ryan and kicked at the top of the hill. I knew she'd get home and I was able to enjoy it. I think she'll get a mile and a quarter. She's very easy to handle and she's very brave. She's not very big, but she's got a big engine.”

Introduced as soon as the Irish flat season resumed after the lockdown last June, Mother Earth was second to the precocious Frenetic (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) over an extended five furlongs at Navan before finishing a distant third in the G3 Albany S. nine days later at Royal Ascot. Backed up quickly when a four-length winner of the Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies' Sprint over the same six-furlong trip at Naas, she looked in need of further when third behind Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and old rival Frenetic in The Curragh's G2 Airlie Stud S. Her subsequent performance when third behind TDN Rising Star Pretty Gorgeous (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}) in the G2 Debutante S. again at The Curragh in August suggested that even seven furlongs was insufficient, but when Seamie Heffernan attempted to employ her stamina from the front in the G1 Moyglare Stud S. the plan backfired and she faded to 11th.

In a now-notorious error, Mother Earth was third in the Fillies' Mile where her number cloth was mixed up with stablemate Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) but after all the focus on that mistake had died away her performance when chasing home Pretty Gorgeous and another TDN Rising Star in Indigo Girl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was clearly another step up. Very few fillies can start so early and end up running such a strong race in a Breeders' Cup contest, but she proved one of those rarities as she charged late to narrow the winning margin of Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. It was significant that she was chosen to go with Santa Barbara to Newmarket and with Frankie boasting such a fine strike-rate for the stable ultimately no surprise that she came through for a stable that now focuses intently on this Classic and its fillies in general.

“The fillies live close to each other and everyone was delighted with both of them,” O'Brien said. “The race went lovely and we were delighted with Santa Barbara–we got a great run out of her and she'll head for the [June 4 G1 Epsom] Oaks now with Mother Earth going for the [G1] Irish 1000 Guineas [at The Curragh May 23]. Going into the dip on fast ground, it wouldn't surprise you that Santa Barbara was green but she would have learnt a lot. She's an unbelievably beautiful big, powerful filly with everything in the right place. Mother Earth is a very good filly, always was, and she put her head down and ran to the line. She is very tough and very genuine and obviously Zoffany is a big loss.”

“It was unfair to Santa Barbara to come, but we had to with a view to coming back for the Oaks,” O'Brien continued. “Ryan said he would have liked to have waited longer, but he saw Frankie coming on his outside and he had to go. We never took her off the bridle at home–today was her first time. Hopefully she'll come out of it okay and it will do her good. We were never going to over-race her and wanted to limit the amount of times she ran, with a late-season campaign planned after the Oaks.”

Saffron Beach's trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said of the runner-up, “It would have been the quickest ground she has been on, but she can handle it because she is versatile as you saw in the Oh So Sharp on good-to-soft and here on the quicker ground. We are just all thrilled and I'm sure the owners are highly delighted. This time last year, she wasn't even in training. She has seen the mile out 100 per cent. I knew she would get the mile and I know she will get a mile and a quarter as well. There is a good one in her.” Richard Fahey had made no secret beforehand of his expectations of Fev Rover and her performance was justification of that. “We were delighted with her–it wasn't a truly-run race really,” her trainer commented. “Paul [Hanagan] felt the ground was a bit quick for her and she just rolled about a bit, but you'd have to be happy with that. She probably will go further in time and a bit of juice in the ground doesn't bother her at all. She's in the Irish Guineas and that was going to be the plan–that or Royal Ascot.”

On a weekend where Jim Bolger has been omnipresent where it mattered, it was the master of Coolcullen who initially campaigned the dam Many Colours (GB) (Green Desert) and drew from her a win in the Listed Dance Design S. and second in the G3 Denny Cordell & Lanwades Stud Fillies S. before she switched to Saeed bin Suroor. It took her a while to produce a black-type performer, but 12 years after her own exploits in that sphere she had the G2 Premio Dormello winner Night Colours (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) in October 2019. Earlier that month, Mother Earth had been a relatively cheap €150,000 purchase by M V Magnier at the Goffs Orby in what would amount to yet another piece of prescience from Coolmore. Many Colours's latest produce are a yearling filly by Sioux Nation and a colt foal by Zoffany.

Mother Earth becomes the first Classic winner for her sire, who was taken from the industry all too soon given his recent rise to prominence. Many Colours was the leading performer for First of Many (GB) (Darshaan {GB}), in turn a full-sister to the G3 Lillie Langtry S. runner-up Without a Trace (Ire) and a half to the Listed Marygate S. winner Patience Alexander (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) who was also third in the Albany. She is connected to the G3 Anglesey S. and G3 Molecomb S. winner Lady Alexander (Ire) (Night Shift), dam of the G3 Palace House S.-winning successful sire Dandy Man (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}) and to Anthem Alexander (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) who took the G2 Queen Mary S. and was placed in the G1 Cheveley Park S. and G1 Commonwealth Cup.

Ganay Triumph For Australia’s Mare Australis

There was more Boudot magic at ParisLongchamp on Sunday as “PC” made all to draw the sting from all rivals and land the G1 Prix Ganay with the rapid improver Mare Australis (Ire) (Australia {GB}). Always highly-regarded and now an entirely different proposition from the greenhorn of last summer, Gestut Schlenderhan's homebred had offered a glimpse of what was to come when second on his return to Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in the 10-furlong G2 Prix d'Harcourt at this venue Apr. 11. Asked a new question by his rider on this sternest test of his ability so far, the 5-2 second favourite responded by stretching every rival including Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) who was in closest attendance. When he kicked in early straight, he turned the screw too tight on Ballydoyle's 9-5 market-leader raider and kept galloping true to the line to beat the emergent Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths. Providing Andre Fabre with a seventh renewal of this prestige event, he offered proof of his talent by gapping the eventual third Mogul by 3 1/2 lengths in total. “He's always been a nice horse, but he's needed a lot of time as he was very immature,” Fabre explained. “He's coming around now and had run a very good race in the Harcourt. He won really nicely today and I'll keep him in France and maybe go for the [G1] Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. I don't know yet, but his target will be the Arc later in the season.”

One of a clutch of Schlenderhan horses sent to France at the end of 2019 along with the now-famous In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and talented Alson (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), Mare Australis had beaten the subsequent group 2 winner Zamrud (Ger) (Samum {Ger}) on his sole start at two for the Jean-Pierre Carvalho stable at Munich. In deep on his debut for this stable when fourth behind the smart Port Guillaume (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), Gold Trip and Dawn Intello (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) in a 10 1/2-furlong conditions race at Saint-Cloud last May, he made heavy weather of winning the 12-furlong Listed Prix de l'Avre at Chantilly the following month. Not seen again until finishing second to the Irish revelation Baron Samedi (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris over 11 furlongs here in October, the bay was no match for the still-underestimated Skalleti in the Prix d'Harcourt but again demonstrated that he finds plenty for pressure. With Fabre having worked the oracle in the interim, he looked a ready-made Arc challenger here after that fine-tuning process. The solid marker Gold Trip was just over two lengths behind Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the autumn showpiece, so Mare Australis is already comfortably in the vicinity when it comes to that target.

Mare Australis is the last known foal out of the triple listed-placed Miramare (Ger) (Rainbow Quest), a daughter of the German listed scorer Minaccia (Ger) (Platini {Ger}). She in turn produced five black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France winner Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}) and the G3 Prix de Barbeville scorer Montclair (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). She is also the second dam of this stable's Listed Prix de Pontarme winner and G2 Prix du Muguet third Mer et Nuages (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and the GII Fort Marcy S. winner Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}). The fourth dam is the dual Classic-winning German champion Majoritat (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}), a close relative of the great Monsun (Ger) whose list of descendants feature the G1 Japanese Derby hero Eishin Flash (Jpn) (King's Best).
