Arqana Spring Sale Entries Transferred To Summer Sale

Arqana's Online Spring Sale, planned for May 21, did not draw enough high-potential offerings, and thus entries for that sale will be transferred to the Arqana Summer Sale, which is set for Deauville from June 29 to July 1.

The Arqana Summer Sale is a mixed sale of 2-year-old breeze-up and store horses, breeding stock and flat and National Hunt horses in training. It has had a clearance rate of greater than 80% for four consecutive years.

Noble Mission’s Spanish Mission Takes the Yorkshire Cup

Providing a boost to Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) who had beaten him so readily in the Mar. 27 G2 Dubai Gold Cup, Team Valor and Gary Barber's Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) was at the fore with a smooth success in Friday's G2 Yorkshire Cup. Held up in last early by William Buick, last year's G2 Doncaster Cup winner who was making his European return having been fifth at Meydan was moved closer travelling notably strongly as Sir Ron Priestley (GB) (Australia {GB}) attacked approaching three out. Getting the better of that 6-5 favourite a furlong from home, the 11-2 shot was firmly in command from there and had 2 3/4 lengths to spare over Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) at the line, with Sir Ron Priestley surprisingly backing out of the fight late to be a further length away in third. “It was a great performance. He won the Doncaster Cup last year in great style and it was similar conditions today,” Buick said of the June 17 G1 Ascot Gold Cup-bound winner. “He doesn't have many blips in his career and they've only been when the ground has been bad or he's been unfortunate. He travelled smoothly today and over this trip he has that turn of foot, that tactical pace which is great to have in a stayer.”

Having proven himself a genuine pattern-race performer when beating Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by four lengths in Newmarket's 13-furlong G3 Bahrain Trophy in July 2019, Spanish Mission also garnered the Jockey Club Derby Invitational at Belmont that season before trying staying trips. Second in Sandown's G3 Henry II S. over two miles in early July, the bay was sixth in the G1 Goodwood Cup later that month before leaving David Simcock and marking his debut for this stable with a comprehensive win in the Listed Chester S. in August. Proving that the near two-and-a-quarter-mile trip of the Doncaster Cup held no fears when following up at the St Leger meeting, he was seventh in the G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup on testing ground at Ascot in October. Runner-up in the 15-furlong Red Sea Turf H. at Riyadh Feb. 20 before his Dubai Gold Cup effort.

Underlining just what a stamina influence Noble Mission has been in this instance, the first foal out of the listed-winning dam Limonar (Ire) (Street Cry {Ire}) was the Listed Rose Bowl S.-winning sprinter Mokarris (More Than Ready) who was also runner-up in the G2 Gimcrack S. Limonar is a half-sister to the GI Shoemaker Mile winner Talco (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) and to the dam of the recent G3 Prix de la Grotte third Silvestri (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) who lines up in Sunday's G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. This is also the family of the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas hero Bachelor Duke (Miswaki) and the G1 National S.-winning sire Fatherland (Ire) which includes Sonnyboyliston (Ire) (Power {GB}) who was third in this month's G3 Ormonde S. Her 2-year-old colt is by Mastery, while she also has a yearling son of Uncle Mo.

Sea the Stars Colt a New Rising Star At Newmarket

Friday's Betfair Novice S. at Newmarket looked a strong heat on paper, but Juddmonte's Derab (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) turned the mile contest into a procession as he registered a 6 1/2-length success in the style almost demanded of a half-brother to Clarehaven's stellar Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}). Just over an hour after the filly that beat him at Newbury last time, Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}), had proven such a disappointment at York the John and Thady Gosden-trained homebred was intent only on moving forward at a rate of knots. Always happy racing towards the front up the centre of the track under Martin Harley, the 10-11 favourite was left in control of affairs well before the two-furlong pole and hardly had to come out of second gear to set his seal on the race. Shaken up to put the result beyond doubt heading down into the “dip”, the bay was amply generous as he inflicted the heavy defeat on the well-regarded William Haggas-trained Fireworks (Fr) (Kingman {GB}), in turn a head in front of the newcomer Injazati (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}). Derab does hold an entry in the G1 Epsom Derby June 5, but John Gosden is not entertaining that great leap. “We will either keep him at a mile or go a mile and a quarter and look at options over those trips,” he said. “He has made big bounds, as he has always wanted to be in a hurry about life but he is doing things in the correct rhythm now.”

Second on debut over seven furlongs behind TDN Rising Star and subsequent G3 Tattersalls S. winner and G3 Craven S. runner-up La Barrosa (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) at Ascot on his sole juvenile start in September, Derab was 1 3/4 lengths behind Snow Lantern upped to this more suitable trip at Newbury Apr. 18 but was a different proposition this time. Ultra-professional throughout, the stoutly-bred blueblood has the world at his feet with all the indications that he will progress markedly when upped in trip. “He ran very well at Ascot first time out, then we ran into a problem in the autumn,” Gosden explained. “He came back and he was a bit fresh. We were very keen to settle him at Newbury and we were more interested in settling him than anything else. He was much more sensible today and he has run a lovely race. He has grown up a lot.”

Derab's half-sibling Enable needs little introduction, with her brilliant haul including a record-setting three G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. and two renewals of the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, as well as the G1 Epsom and Irish Oaks, a G1 Eclipse S. and a GI Breeders' Cup Turf. The dam Concentric (GB) (Sadler's Wells), who was successful in the Listed Prix Charles Laffitte and runner-up in the G3 Prix de Flore at or around 10 furlongs, has also produced the useful Contribution (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) who was third in the G2 Prix de Pomone and G3 Prix Allez France, and Entitle (GB) (Dansili {GB}) who was second in the G3 Musidora S. Her 2-year-old full-brother to Enable is named Lenient (GB), while she also has a 2021 full-sister to Derab.

The second dam Apogee (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}) was successful in the G3 Prix de Royaumont before producing the G3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord and G3 Prix Thomas Bryon winner Apsis (GB) (Barathea {Ire}) and Dance Routine (GB) (Sadler's Wells) who took the G2 Prix de Royallieu and also the Royaumont and was runner-up in the G1 Prix de Diane. She in turn produced Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}), whose exploits included two victories in the GI Sword Dancer S. and wins in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and GI Manhattan S. as well as two second placings in the Arc. The third dam is the Epsom Oaks runner-up Bourbon Girl (GB) (Ile de Bourbon) whose best performer was the G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly winner and G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud runner-up Daring Miss (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and who is the ancestress of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Spanish Moon (El Prado {Ire}) and his G2 Ribblesdale S.-winning full-sister Spanish Sun.

Ribchester Colt Streaks to Rising Stardom at Newbury

Richard Hannon trainee Gisburn (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) was unable to make all when an Apr. 16 debut fourth tackling five furlongs at Newbury in his only prior start, but the flashy chestnut powered up over six furlongs at the Berkshire venue to earn TDN Rising Stardom in hugely impressive fashion. The well-backed 6-4 favourite was sharpest from the gates and seized an immediate lead. Last off the bridle after halfway, he was given a shake of the reins with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and surged clear in the closing stages to leave Kingmax (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) trailing 6 1/2 lengths in his wake, becoming the third winner for his freshman sire (by Iffraaj {GB}).

“Gisburn hasn't done much since his first run, but he's a horse Richard [Hannon] has loved from the day he saw him,” revealed winning rider Pat Dobbs. “His debut here was good, but he ran green. He was professional today, although I'd rather he didn't hang right. He's still a baby though, but very exciting, and he put a lot of daylight between them. I'm sure he'll go to Royal Ascot, maybe for the [June 15 G2] Coventry.”

Gisburn is the seventh of eight foals and third scorer produced by Listed Prix Coronation runner-up Disclose (GB) (Dansili {GB}). He is a half-brother to Listed Golden Rose S. victor Encrypted (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire). Descendants of his second dam Revealing (GB) (Halling), herself a half-sister to G2 Queen's Vase and G3 Park Hill S. placegetter Singleton (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) and a granddaughter of GI Oak Leaf S. heroine Arewehavingfunyet (Sham), also include G2 Rockfel S. and G3 Oh So Sharp S. placegetter Gavota (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), G3 Prix Paul de Moussac third Grand Vista (GB) (Danehill) and the dual stakes-placed World Ruler (GB) (Dansili {GB}).
