Tokyo Gold Skips to Italian Derby Win

Tokyo Gold (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) rolled to a daylight win in the G2 Premio 138th Derby Italiano Universita' Campus Bio-Medico di Roma at Capannelle on Sunday. The 5-2 crowd's pick gave the Demuro brothers an international Classic double, with Cristian Demuro in the irons in Rome. His brother Mirco had claimed the G1 Yushun Himba aboard Uberleben (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn}) at Tokyo earlier in the day.

Caught out in the middle of the course from the bell, he rated in midpack through the early stages. Still one of the widest approaching the final turn, he cruised up the centre of the course at the 600-metre marker, seized command shortly thereafter and cantered across the line four lengths to the good of Juan de Montalban (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}). Alastor (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) was another 1 1/2 lengths behind.

A winner at second asking at Saint-Malo last July, Tokyo Gold captured the Listed Prix Haras de Bouquetot in his next start at Craon on Sept. 5. Off the board in the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon a month later, the colt was a distant second in the Listed Prix Maurice Caillault when making his seasonal bow at Chantilly on Mar. 9. He stalked and briefly led in the G3 Prix Noailles, but faded to fourth at ParisLongchamp on Apr. 11.

Pedigree Notes
Tokyo Gold is the 14th group winner from 33 black-type winners for his sire, who stands at Haras de Colleville in France. Like his sire, and damsire, Dalakhani, all three are grey. The latter has 35 black-type winners as a broodmare sire, with the Teruya Yoshida homebred his 18th group winner.

A full-brother to the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud third Notte Bianca (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), Tokyo Gold is out of Italian listed winner Biancarosa. Bred by Azienda Agricola La Vigna SRL, she was raced by Yoshida to win the Listed Premio Republiche Marinare at Capannelle as a 2-year-old. Mated exclusively with Kendargent once retired to the paddocks, the bay's latest produce is a yearling filly by that sire.

Stars on Show at ParisLongchamp

There is some high-class action at ParisLongchamp on Monday, with the G1 Saxon Warrior Coolmore Prix Saint-Alary looking a wide-open affair containing a pair of TDN Rising Stars in Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Harajuku (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). While the former is unproven in black-type company, the Niarchos homebred Harajuku comes here on the back of a defeat of the re-opposing Incarville (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) in the 10 1/2-furlong G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud at the beginning of May. Her trainer Andre Fabre has won this a record eight times and also saddles the Wertheimers' Mar. 11 Listed Prix Rose de Mai scorer and the Apr. 6 G3 Prix Penelope third Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) and Lady Bamford's May 1 Saint-Cloud maiden winner Love Child (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Yeguada Centurion's Sibila Spain started her career with a nine-length success in a debutantes race over this 10-furlong trip at Saint-Cloud Mar. 25 before following up at Lyon-Parilly Apr. 15. She has something to find with Al Shira'aa Farms' Apr. 11 G3 Prix Vanteaux winner Rumi (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) and Ecurie Waldeck's Apr. 18 G3 Prix de la Grotte scorer Cirona (GB) (Maxios {GB}), but this renewal looks poised for a potential improver given how little there is between all protagonists.

In the 11-furlong G2 Prix Hocquart, Australian Bloodstock's May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic winner Lambo (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}) squares up to Juddmonte's May 10 Saint-Cloud conditions scorer Media Stream (GB) (Frankel {GB}) while the G2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier sees The Aga Khan's Valia (Fr) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) return to the scene of her success in the G2 Prix Chaudenay and second in the G1 Prix Royal-Oak in October. Also on the card is the Listed Prix de Montretout over a mile, where Godolphin's G1 Dubai World Cup third Magny Cours (Medaglia d'Oro) reverts in trip after a sixth in the G1 Prix Ganay here May 2.

There is Classic action at Cologne with the G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen, or German 2000 Guineas, seeing Stall Lintec's Apr. 24 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial winner Best of Lips (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}) set the standard the day after the colt he beat in October's course-and-distance G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, Sea of Sands (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), took the G3 Derby-Trial. If there is a lurker, it could be Gestut Hof Ittlingen's Markus Klug-trained homebred Sampras (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) who won his sole start impressively on the same Dortmund card in September that saw Best of Lips also break his maiden

Mac Swiney Heads to the Derby, Royal Ascot For Poetic Flare

Saturday's G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas winner Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and his stablemate, G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas scorer Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) are bound for the G1 Cazoo Derby and Royal Ascot's G1 St James's Palace S., respectively, owner/breeder/trainer Jim Bolger revealed on the Luck on Sunday programme.

Bolger told Luck on Sunday of Mac Swiney, “As they say in the west of Ireland, I was mighty impressed with him. I thought that he stuck to the task really well–any horse wishing to take him on and beat him in the future will have to be up for it because he isn't going to give in easily.”

A winner of half of his eight starts, the chestnut won the G2 Futurity S. last August and added the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy on Oct. 24. He was fourth in his 3-year-old bow behind current Derby favourite Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial S. at Leopardstown on May 9.

“I'm very fortunate that the two talented 3-year-olds colts I have at the moment both have great temperaments and they can take anything that I throw at them.

“They're only different in the amount of work that they take. Mac Swiney takes very little work, whereas the other fella takes an awful lot of work, which is why I felt he would stand up to the three Guineas.”

Added Bolger of his Derby hopeful, “I'm the world's worst punter, so asking me what price he should be wouldn't get a very knowledgeable answer. In my mind there isn't anything ahead of him–the form is there now.”

Poetic Flare, who won the G3 Killavullan S. at Leopardstown at two and took the Listed Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2000 Guineas Trial S. there on Apr. 11, contested all three Guineas. The bay reported home sixth in the G1 French 2000 Guineas in very soft ground on May 16 prior to his Irish Guineas second. His next target is most likely the St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot.

Bolger said, “The three Guineas came about the year I had Finsceal Beo. In the end it was a few showers of rain in France that cost us the French Guineas, otherwise we would have had all three.

“We realised this [Poetic Flare] was a very talented horse with a lot of durability about him. He's tough and he could take it.

“Apart from a few things we got wrong in France and then beating him ourselves with a different horse, we could have had the three, so it is possible.

“With a little different circumstance he could be the winner of three Guineas today and that would be fairly unique.

“I said earlier in the week that whatever beat Poetic Flare would win the race. It's not often I'm right, but I was right on that occasion.”

Bolger added, “I'd say there's a good chance that he will [run in the St James's Palace]. It depends how he gets on in the meantime, but I'd say he's more likely to turn up there than not.

“I'd say he'll stay at a mile. The only thing that might cause us to divert from that would be the Eclipse at Sandown, but then I have to keep that in mind for Mac Swiney as well.”

Princes Of Wales’s S. For Love

Dual Classic heroine Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won the G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Oaks in 2020, will make her 4-year-old bow in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot, trainer Aidan O'Brien revealed on Sunday. The blaze-faced chestnut was due to contest the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh, but was withdrawn due to ground concerns. It was a similar story when the G1 Yorkshire Oaks victress did not contest the boggy 2020 G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe last October.

“I wanted to run Love this weekend, but I couldn't run her on that ground,” said the maestro of Ballydoyle of the Coolmore partners' runner. “She will probably end up going to the Prince of Wales's and could go there with MGSW & MG1SP Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).”
