Jockey Club Sponsors ROR Championships

The Retraining of Racehorses National Championships will return in 2021 with The Jockey Club as a new three-year sponsor. The Jockey Club ROR National Championships will be held from Aug. 26 to 29 at Aintree Equestrian Centre featuring classes for showing, dressage and jumping, with The Jockey Club Supreme Champion to be crowned on the Saturday evening. Entries for the Championships are open and will remain so until Aug. 1. The last staging of the event in 2019 drew a total of 940 entries from over 326 individual retrained racehorses.

Di Arbuthnot, RoR chief executive, said, “We are delighted that RoR's relationship with The Jockey Club will enter a new phase in 2021 with a new three-year deal in support of our national championships. After the cancellation of last year's event due to the pandemic it will be wonderful to be back at Aintree in August.

“Furthermore, in the aftermath of The Jockey Club staging The Cazoo Derby at Epsom Downs, the country's most prestigious Flat race that identifies the cream of the crop from each generation of Thoroughbreds, it is apt to be announcing The Jockey Club's three-year sponsorship of an event that celebrates the alternative career paths taken by horses not of the calibre of Derby or Oaks winners.”

Barry Mahon Appointed As Juddmonte Racing Manager

Barry Mahon will succeed Teddy Grimthorpe in the role of European racing manager for Juddmonte from June 21. He will also continue in his role as stud director in Ireland.

It was announced in April that Grimthorpe would stand down from his position following Royal Ascot, after which Mahon will start his new role which will see him liaise with Juddmonte's trainers in the UK, France and Ireland.

Mahon, who was born and raised at Juddmonte's Ferrans Stud in Ireland, has widespread experience in the racing and breeding world, having previously worked for John Gosden, Highclere Stud, Coolmore, and as manager for both Grangecon Stud and Clare Castle Stud. He joined Juddmonte in 2017, succeeding his father Rory Mahon, who remains part of the managerial team in Ireland for Juddmonte, where he was worked for nearly 40 years.

“As Racing Manager for Juddmonte's late owner, Prince Khalid Abdullah, Teddy managed all Juddmonte's European horses in training and played a leading role in Juddmonte's consistent and sustained success worldwide at the very highest level in racing,” said Juddmonte's chief executive Douglas Erskine Crum.

“On behalf of Prince Khalid's family and all of us past and present at Juddmonte, I thank Teddy for all he has achieved, year after year, and we wish him the very best of good fortune for the future.”

He added, “We are delighted Barry is taking on the additional European racing role. He is ideally placed to take on Teddy's duties in Europe and, together with Rory, continue to manage Juddmonte Ireland.”

Mahon's fellow Irishman Garrett O'Rourke will remain as general manager of Juddmonte in America, where he oversees both the stud and racing activities, while Simon Mockridge remains as general manager in the UK and is responsible for all breeding aspects, including the European stallions and broodmares.

Juddmonte's racing office will continue to be run from Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket under Megan Taylor, and Claude Beniada will continue to represent Juddmonte in France, reporting to Barry Mahon.

Jockey Duo Taken to Hospital After Windsor Fall

Alistair Rawlinson and George Buckell have both been taken to the hospital after Buckell's mount Diligent Lady (GB) (Due Diligence) fell and brought down Rawlinson's ride Centurion Song (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) in Windsor's Fitzdares Sprint Series H. on Monday evening. Following the incident, racing was delayed by 45 minutes as both were treated on course.

“They are both being taken to hospital for further assessment,” said Windsor Clerk of the Course Sophie Candy. “They were both conscious and talking.”

Pyledriver to Skip Royal Ascot and Wait For King George

Friday's G1 Coral Coronation Cup victor Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) will most likely remain on the bench during Royal Ascot and will instead target the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot on July 24. The 4-year-old colt was reported to be in good form, if a bit tired by trainer William Muir.

“It took a bit out of him–he didn't eat brilliant for two nights but he licked up last night,” said Muir. “The first night he normally does leave a bit, but the second night he's normally back on it, so it probably took a little bit out of him.

“He's got a Group 1 now, so let's hope we can keep going. Royal Ascot was going to be the next race. But he's going to need to knock the door down for me to be going there– otherwise we'll wait for the King George.

“If he comes mad fresh by Monday when the confirmation stage is, then I'd think about it. But it was quite a battle on Friday. He might just need longer than two weeks to get back to his best. There's no point going there if we're not over this race.”
