Nick Mustoe Will Be New Sandown Chairman in 2022

Nick Mustoe has been appointed the new Chairman of Sandown Park Racecourse from Jan. 1, 2022, replacing Peter Jensen, The Jockey Club announced on Tuesday. Mustoe was previously on the Kempton Park Committee for 13 years and served as chairman between 2013 and 2018. Currently Mustoe is Chairman of Kindred, a London-based agency and has National Hunt horses in training with Emma Lavelle and a small band of broodmares based in England and Ireland.

Sandy Dudgeon, Senior Steward of The Jockey Club, said, “I would like to congratulate Nick on his appointment and I look forward to working with him in his new role from the start of 2022.

“He has already made a valuable contribution to our sport and I know that his passion for racing coupled with his expertise in the corporate world will be of great benefit to Sandown Park in the coming years.

“I am especially grateful to Peter for all the years of commitment, ideas and passion he has brought to bear at various racecourses across The Jockey Club and it is no coincidence that ROA Gold Standard Awards have followed.

“These positions require a significant amount of personal time and dedication and I take this opportunity to thank both our outgoing and incoming chairmen for their dedication and enthusiasm.”

Irish Champion Caspian Prince Retired

Time has been called on the racing career of Irish champion Caspian Prince (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}–Crystal Gaze {Ire}, by Rainbow Quest) due to a flare up of an old injury. The popular gelding, currently co-owned by Stephen Louch, excelled at sprint distances and accumulated 23 wins and 22 placings from 115 starts with earnings of $1,249,597. Trained in his later years by Michael Appleby, the Ballygallon Stud Ltd.-bred chestnut won the 2017 G2 Sapphire S. and 2016 Listed Mercury S. and was placed in another four black-type races, three at group level. He was named an Irish highweight as an 8-year-old over five to seven furlongs in 2017. A winner of a Beverly contest on June 15, he switched to the all-weather and saluted over the minimum trip at Newcastle on June 25. His final start was a sixth back on turf at Ascot on July 23.

“He's been a legend, an absolute star, he's a nice character and I've been privileged to train him,” Appleby said. “We've had some great times with him. We've had him for the last few years of his career and he always gives his all, he's a favourite in the yard with the staff.

“He's broken track records as a 12-year-old, you won't see many horses doing that, I think he's the oldest horse in England to win a class two. We've not been hard on him at all, we didn't do too much with him because we kept him for the track.”

The 12-year-old will now be retrained for a second career in another discipline.

“We were half-thinking of keeping him at home and just putting him in the field with a couple of horse that have retired, but I don't think he's ready for that,” he said. “I think he'd still like to be active and doing something else.

“We'll find a really nice home for him with somebody who'll want to do ROR [retraining of racehorses] or dressage with him because I think he'd still love to be doing something.

“We'll find a home for him and have him on loan there so that if they ever don't want him, we'll be having him straight back.”

Potential Targets Outlined For Go Bears Go

Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}), who ran third in the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. at The Curragh on Sunday, will make his next start in either the Aug. 22 G1 Prix Morny at Deauville later this month or the G2 Gimcrack S. at York on Aug. 20, trainer Dave Loughnane revealed on Monday. A winner of an Ascot novice on May 8, the colt was second in the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot prior to winning the June 26 G2 GAIN Rainway S.

He said, “At the end of the day he was beaten a length on his first start in a Group 1, so you couldn't be disappointed.

“He's a Group 1 horse, whether he won yesterday or not. We have a couple of options. There's the Prix Morny at Deauville in a couple of weeks' time, and the Gimcrack in York is also an option. He'd have a 3lb penalty in the Gimcrack, with it being a Group 2, but that wouldn't bother us. It will all depend on where the quicker ground is.

“The ground looked pretty soft in Deauville yesterday, but the weather does look pretty good between now and the Morny. You never know in France as they do seem to water the tracks a lot and we're not going to go there unless it's quick ground.”

Haydock Sprint Cup Next For Starman

Starman (GB) (Dutch art {GB}), the winner of the G1 July Cup, will aim for a start in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock on Sept. 4 after running a close third in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Sunday. A winner of his first three starts last fall, including the Listed Garrowby S. at York in September, the 4-year-old colt did not care for the soft ground in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. and ran unplaced in October. he was back on top in the G2 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics S. on May 12 prior to his Newmarket victory on July 10.

Trainer Ed Walker said, “We live to fight another day and when we get him back on proper fast ground, we'll see his true colours again. We've so much rain, we're surely due a dry spell. We'll aim for Haydock and see how we go.”
