Deep Impact Filly Emulates Dam in Shuka Sho

The G1 Shuka Sho had been billed as the stomping grounds of wildly popular white filly and G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas heroine Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune {Jpn}), but instead, 7-1 shot Akaitorino Musume (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) spoiled the party at Kyoto on Sunday.

Following in the hoofsteps of her dam, 2010 Shuka Sho victress Apapane, the Makoto Kaneko Holdings-owned dark bay settled in a tracking sixth through the early going as A Shin Hiten (Jpn) (A Shin Hikari {Jpn}) cut out steady fractions while Sodashi sat in second several lengths back. At the head of the lane, pilot Keita Tosaki had Akaitorino Musume in an ideal position and ready to pounce on the leaders, as Sodashi took over from pacesetter A Shin Hiten.

However, with 200 metres remaining, Sodashi began to weaken and it was left to Akaitorino Musume, Andvaranaut (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), and the rapidly closing Fine Rouge (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) to fight out the finish. A half-length separated Akaitorino Musume and Fine Rouge at the line, with the latter a half-length to the good of Andvaranaut at the wire. A Shin Hiten held on well to take fourth. Sodashi faded to 10th. G1 Japanese Oaks heroine Uberleben (Jpn) (Gold Ship {Jpn}) broke poorly and never factored in 14th.

“There was a strong idle horse in today's race but I'm really glad we were able to claim the last leg of the  Triple Crown. I was able to settle the filly in good position and let her find a good rhythm. She responded willingly and stretched really well in the lane. I think she is a strong horse and felt that she has stepped up to the next level. I look forward to her performances going forward,” commented Tosaki.

A two-time winner from three starts at two, Akaitorino Musume added her first black-type badge with a victory over a mile in the G3 Daily Hai Queen Cup at Tokyo on Feb. 13. Only fourth to Sodashi in the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas, she improved to second behind Uberleben in the G1 Japanese Oaks, her first try at 2400 metres, as her previous five races had been at a mile.

Pedigree Notes

The winner is the 53rd Group 1 winner for the late  Deep Impact. Already successful at the Group 3 level prior to Sunday, she is among 178 worldwide black-type scorers and 144 group winners. Somewhat surprisingly, she is only the second top-level winner for her sire out of his deceased studmate King Kamehameha's daughters after G1 Japanese Derby hero Wagnerian (Jpn). King Kamehameha has 26 black-type winners and 19 group winners. His best runner as a broodmare sire is 2020 Japanese Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Daring Tact (Jpn) (Epiphaneia).

The fourth foal and fourth winner for her dual champion and Fillies' Triple Crown-winning dam Apapane, Akaitorino Musume is a full-sister to dual Japanese group-placed Jinambo (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and the Group 3-placed Rhinebeck (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Her dam, who won three of her four starts at two, including the Hanshin Juvenile Fillies when it was only a listed race, built upon her juvenile form with Classic victories in the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas, G1 Japanese Oaks and the 2010 edition of this event. As a 4-year-old, Apapane added the G1 Victoria Mile to her haul, and her latest produce are both by Deep Impact's brother Black Tide (Jpn)–a yearling filly and a weanling colt.

Katsumi Yoshida purchased the winner's second dam, Salty Bid, out of the Fasig-Tipton February Sale for $200,000 in 2002. Sent to Japan, she placed at the listed level in her adopted country, while her great granddam Piper Piper (Spectacular Bid) ran third in the 1990 GI Ashland S.

Lizaid Registers A Stakes First For Zarak In Germany

Trainer Peter Schiergen had already scooped last month's G3 Zukunfstrennen, one of Germany's four juvenile pattern-race contests, with Rocchigiani (GB) (Time Test {GB}) and he doubled up with the once-raced maiden winner Lizaid (Ger) (Zarak {Fr}) in Sunday's G3 Die Winterkonigin – Preis des Derbysiegers Sisfahan at Baden-Baden to provide that filly's freshman sire (by Dubawi {Ire}) with a first black-type triumph. Lizaid's debut score came in the same one-mile Hannover maiden annexed by 2018 heroine Whispering Angel (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) and she remained undefeated to provide her trainer with a fourth renewal and a first since 2007. The eventual winner was well away from the inside stall and bowled along behind the leading duo in third after the initial exchanges of this black-type bow. Sent wide with the field into the straight, the 27-5 chance claimed the stands' side rail and the lead with 350 metres remaining and kept on strongly under final-furlong rousting to secure a career high by 2 1/4 lengths from 28-1 rank outsider Rondina (Ger) (Intello {Ger}). Rondina denied Schiergen an exacta by outbobbing Barina (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by a short head for second while 33-10 favourite Lacuna (GB) (Shalaa {Ire}) ran on from rear to finish a neck back in fourth.

Schiergen was delighted with the performances of Lizaid and Barina and said, “Both fillies had been working well and had improved from their debut victory, as a lot of my young horses do, so we were quite hopeful beforehand. Looking at the way they are bred, they should both be suited by longer distances next year.”

Lizaid is the first of two foals produced by G2 Diana-Trial third Litaara (Ger) (Wiener Walzer {Ger}), herself kin to MGSW G2 Union-Rennen victor Liang Kay (Ger) (Dai Jin {GB}) and stakes-winning G3 Kolner Herbst-Stuten-Meile placegetter Laeya Star (Ger) (Royal Dragon). The latter is the dam of G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen third Laeyos (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) while Liang Kay's full-sister Laey Diamond (Ger) produced G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Lacazar (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) and G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen runner-up Liberry Gold (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}). The March-foaled homebred bay's dual stakes-winning second dam Linton Bay (Ger) (Funambule) is the leading performer out of Ludhiana (Ger) (Ti Amo {Ger}), whose descendants also include Listed Bayerischer Fliegerpreis and Listed Dallmayr Coupe Lukull winner Lonicera (Ger) (Charmer {Ire}). Lizaid hails from the family of Preis der Diana-winning champion Lis (Ger) (Masetto {Ger}) and she is kin to a weanling filly by Best Solution (Ire).

Murphy Earns Third Jockeys’ Title

The British jockeys' championship came right down to the wire in a tight race between Oisin Murphy and William Buick in recent weeks, but despite Buick's victory aboard Creative Force on Champions Day, Murphy prevailed by two victories to earn his third consecutive champion jockey title.

“I'm over the moon and thrilled to get it across the line,” Murphy said. “Thank you to my family and everyone–I've got a massive support group. The last week I've had a lot of people on my side. Frankie Dettori has been there every day making sure my spirits are up and I was riding off instinct as normal which is key. You need to make every ride count and I was running out of opportunities. I held it together thankfully in the end.”

It has not been a straightforward few weeks for Murphy, who suffered a face injury in a nasty paddock incident at Salisbury and later failed a breathalyser test at Newmarket after reports of an altercation in a local pub the night prior. Murphy addressed the latter, saying, “I think everyone knows that I am human and quite honest. But I need to do better and I don't want any issues surrounding my career. Let's just focus on riding winners and hopefully winning another jockeys' championship. I'm 26-years-old so I think I will keep trying for a few more years. Horses are my life and I'm never happier than when I'm on the back of a horse. I've bought my showjumpers and they keep me busy too. Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing have a few horses to go to America for the Breeders' Cup. There are lots of international races in Hong Kong and Japan coming up so I will be busy.

“William was getting a lot more support than I was in the last couple of weeks and the likes of Ed Walker, Hughie Morrison, Andrew Balding and Saeed bin Suroor have been amazing, so thanks to them.”

Murphy is retained rider to Qatar Racing, and Sheikh Fahad spoke out in support of the jockey on Racing TV, saying, “Oisin has really felt it this time, there's no question about it. He felt it at the end of last season as well when he was over at the Breeders' Cup and William was eating into his lead in dramatic fashion. It's been a really high pressure and tense end to the season. Thank God it ends today and not at Doncaster in a few weeks' time as that would drag it out even more.

“Oisin is a young man. We've known him since he was 17 and he's still growing and developing as a man. Clearly there are things that have happened in recent times that he has regrets about and will work hard to put right. I have no doubt that when the pressure of Champions Day is out of the way and he can breathe and regroup, that there will be changes made to his lifestyle and he's going to look very hard at that.

“Nobody can have any idea what it's like being in this cauldron unless they've actually been there themselves. I spoke to Kevin Darley the other day and he said when he sat down at the end of his championship-winning season, he literally lost two days of his life he was so exhausted. He couldn't even remember what happened in that time. William is going to be exhausted as well. Oisin is exhausted and puts himself under huge pressure.

“We all make mistakes. It's been difficult and obviously it's disappointing for everybody that the stories in the press have detracted from what is an absolutely unbelievable achievement–to win three championships on the bounce from such an early start. We're incredibly proud of him. He's very much part of our family and whatever help Oisin needs he'll get.”

Marco Ghiani was named champion apprentice jockey after accumulating 51 winners this year.

“It's really nice to be crowned champion apprentice,” Ghiani said. “It's a dream come true and I'm really thankful to all the people that have helped me along this journey. I'll be smiling forever now.”

The 22-year-old Ghiani, whose highlight this season came when steering the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Real World to a victory in Royal Ascot's Royal Hunt Cup, said he doesn't come from a racing family but decided he wanted to be a jockey at age 15.

“My family have a restaurant,” he explained. “None of them have been with horses, apart from my grandfather's grandfather. We found out last week that he used to ride horses.

“I started working in the restaurant when I was about 10 years old. When I was 15 I didn't want to go to school any more, so my father put me in the restaurant to teach me how to make pizzas. I thought the pizzas were too hot, so my father wanted me to do something else and made me leave.”

Ghiani, who enrolled in the British Racing School and joined Luca Cumani's yard at age 16, said he “just wants to ride as many winners as I can.”
