Addeybb Bows Out On A High

No longer a force to be reckoned with in the major events across Europe, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's stalwart Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) provided the deflated William Haggas stable with a much-needed boost on Sunday as he signed off with a hard-fought success in the G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris.

Haggas issued a statement after the race to the PA news agency which read, “I'm absolutely thrilled to bits and we would like to call it a day with him now. He's been a fantastic servant and it is wonderful he has finished on a high. So, we'll retire him now. He's been magnificent and has taken us across the world. He did us proud in Australia, he's won a Champion Stakes at Ascot, he's been a marvellous horse.”

Only sixth in the G2 Prix Dollar at this ParisLongchamp venue at the start of the month, the four-times group 1 winner was nevertheless shown due respect as the 17-10 favourite and quickly settled in the wake of Monty (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) under Tom Marquand. Left behind by that rival in the straight, the cause looked lost but the veteran responded to his rider's urgings to make up the deficit inside the last 50 metres and prevail by 1 1/4 lengths.

“Obviously, on heavy ground he is very effective, and we were keen to finish on a winning note. Now he has done we'll let him enjoy a wonderful retirement. He means a lot to the yard, he's been a friend to all of us. Kind, sweet-natured horse, just a lovely horse. This is just a great result today.”

A three-time winner at three, Addeybb registered his first group score at four when taking the Sandown's G2 bet365 Mile. The following season, he took the Wolferton S. at Royal Ascot and came back later that summer to annex the G3 Rose of Lancaster S. before rounding out the year with a runner-up finish behind Magical (Ire) in the G1 Qipco Champion S. Poised for the best season of his career, he returned at six to vanquish Australian star Verry Elleegant (NZ) in both Rosehill's G1 Ranvet S. and G1 Queen Elizabeth S. at Randwick. Runner-up in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. while returning to the Royal meeting, he bounced back to secure the Listed Doonside Cup before going one better than the previous season and landing the 2020 renewal of the Champion S. Returning Down Under for last year's Ranvet and Queen Elizabeth, he had to play the bridesmaid to Verry Elleegant in the former, but turned the tables narrowly in the latter. Given over two months off, the gelding was bested by St Mark's Basilica (Fr) in the G1 Coral-Eclipse S., and would only make one more start that season, finishing sixth in the Champion S. Earlier this term, Addeybb finished third in a pair of races at Sandown–the May 26 G3 Brigadier Girard followed by the Listed Gala S. July 1.

Addeybb was back in the blinkers that had been employed once only during his career, when dealing with Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) in last year's Queen Elizabeth S. For Marquand, his last ride on the 8-year-old was an emotive one.

“It's special–he took my career to a new level and we have been trying to get that spark back in him,” he said. “We were hoping he'd come and win and he's a real pleasure to have anything to do with. We've changed up his headgear a few times and it worked–the ground helped as well as the blinkers–he's been fantastic.”

Addeybb's dam Bush Cat (Kingmambo), whose other stakes performer was the GIII Generous S. third Meer Kat (Ire) (Red Ransom), is a daughter of the German listed scorer and G3 Royal Whip S.-placed Arbusha (Danzig). She is a full-sister to the G2 Goldene Peitsche winner Nicholas and to Danlu, whose descendants include the G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Gran Premio di Milano hero Strategic Choice (Alleged). This is the dam line of the US Fillies' Triple Crown heroine Shuvee (Nashua).

New Bay’s Bayside Boy Takes The QEII

One of last term's leading juveniles, Teme Valley and Ballylinch Stud's Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) took until Saturday to put it all together again as a 3-year-old and chose the big stage to do it on in Ascot's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. He has now punched his ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland in November, if connections wish to travel.

Anchored in rear early by Tom Marquand after a tardy break, the 33-1 shot who had enjoyed a confidence-boosting success in Sandown's Listed Fortune S. Sept. 14 delivered a surge to overwhelm the long-time leader Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) inside the final 50 yards.

Going forward with real momentum at the line, the Roger Varian-trained bay who has been galvanised by blinkers had 1 1/4 lengths to spare there over the battling Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), with Jadoomi denied the runner's-up spot by a short head. In the case of the 11-10 favourite Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the writing was on the wall a long way out as she floundered after blowing the start and trailed in sixth.

“We thought he was a lively outsider–he needed to step up massively but he did have very good juvenile form,” Varian said. “We had high hopes for him this season, but he didn't enjoy the firm ground in the summer and the owners and the team at Ballylinch Stud have been very patient with him. He showed a great turn of foot there and I hope he is a horse who will still be with us next year.”

Bayside Boy had come out of his 2-year-old battles beaten more often than not, but even in his second in Newbury's Listed Washington Singer S. and his third placings in the G1 Dewhurst S. and G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy he had shown Classic potential. Beating Reach For the Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in between in Doncaster's G2 Champagne S., he quickly vanished into obscurity following a fruitless summer campaign.

Drawn 14 of 15 in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains in which he beat only two rivals home at ParisLongchamp on May 15, he was seventh in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 14 but was beaten less than two lengths and had briefly threatened on a surface that was too quick. If they were excusable, his fourth when favourite for Goodwood's G3 Thoroughbred S. July 29 was less so but again the ground was against him and a subsequent freshener and the fitting of headgear worked the oracle as he got his head back in front from the day's Balmoral H. runner-up Sweet Believer (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) last time.

If not as badly as Inspiral, who walked out of the stalls, Bayside Boy missed a beat at the start and with Jadoomi setting a slow tempo initially he was left with the proverbial sectionals mountain to climb. While Frankie was notably animated to his left approaching two out, Marquand was merely coaxing his mount ever closer and Bayside Boy was building confidence with every stride as he prepared to bridge a still-sizeable gap.

With such an advantage from early on, Jadoomi and Modern Games should have been able to dominate but the winner was ultimately a notch or two above on this ground and probably in terms of how the races panned out was the day's most impressive.

Marquand summed it up succinctly. “He showed a pretty exceptional turn of foot,” he said of the 11th 3-year-old to win this in the last 15 runnings. “From the two I was never not going to get there and he really enjoyed chasing them down–he sailed home.”

Charlie Appleby, who was taking this in en route to the Breeders' Cup Mile with Modern Games, was inclined to blame the easy surface for the defeat. “Will just said he is as tough as teak, but couldn't get his feet out of the ground unfortunately,” he commented. “He said that if the winner had come close to us, it would have been a different race again. It is the first time he has encountered ground that soft, but he's run a very creditable race and he'll go to the Breeders' Cup now. As we know, in Keeneland he might get the same conditions.”

Ed Crisford said of Jadoomi, “We are absolutely delighted with him. It can be a hard place to lead, but he popped out of the stalls and there wasn't any pace on so James [Doyle] said he was happy in front. Really, the winner came out of nowhere, but we've ran a cracking race and couldn't be happier. I think Keeneland will be the obvious place to go–coming round a bend might just play to his strengths and be the next step. He wants cut in the ground, that's the key. He had to find five or six pounds to be competitive with the top two in the betting and he has definitely improved again. He's a lightly-raced 4-year-old and there's no reason why he shouldn't improve again.”

The flop of Cheveley Park Stud's G1 Coronation S. and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois heroine Inspiral was a surprise, but there had been an early warning sign about her stalls behaviour at the Royal meeting here and a disappointed treble-seeking Dettori was philosophical. “The gates opened and she didn't want to come out–it was one of those cigar moments,” he said. “The whole field went and I found myself last on a filly who needs cover. They went slow, I tried to creep into the race, but the race was done at the start. I don't know why she didn't want to come out, it's the first time she has done it. She's won two Group 1s and horses are not machines and sometimes they under-perform. That has left a sour taste.”

Bayside Boy's dam, the Listed Prix Occitanie scorer Alava (Ire) (Anabaa), is also responsible for the four-times pattern-race scorer Forest Ranger (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) who enjoyed ground on the easy side and captured two renewals of the 10-furlong G2 Huxley S. Alava, who also produced the listed-placed Home Cummins (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}), is out of the triple listed-placed Cerita (Ire) (Wolfhound) whose half-siblings include the G3 Prix de Flore scorer Tamise (Time For a Change) and the GII La Canada S. and GII El Encino S. runner-up Luthier's Launch (Relaunch).

Tamise is the second dam of the G3 Prix de Saint-Georges-winning sprinter Sestilio Jet (Fr) (French Fifteen {Fr}), while the family also features the GI Personal Ensign H. winner Passing Shot (A P Indy). Alava's 2-year-old colt Lord Of Biscay (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) was an impressive debut winner for Ballylinch Stud and this stable last month and has Classic pretensions. Her daughter of Waldgeist (GB) was a €200,000 purchase by Leason Bloodstock at the Goffs Orby last month, while she also has a 2022 full-sister by Lord Of Biscay.

Marquand ‘95% Certain’ To Ride Perfect Power On Champions Day

Tom Marquand is “95% certain” to be aboard multiple Group 1-winning sprinter Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}) in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. on Oct. 15, according to owner Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's racing manager Bruce Raymond. The colt's usual rider, Christophe Soumillon, will be serving part of his 60-day suspension for elbowing another jockey out of the saddle in a race, during that time period. A dual Group 1 winner as a juvenile, the bay's most recent victory was in the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. His latest two efforts were sevenths in the G1 July Cup S. at Newmarket in July and in Deauville's G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest on Aug. 7.

Raymond said, “We've hopefully got Tom Marquand booked. William [Haggas] has Jon and Julia Aisbitt's horse [Tiber Flow (Ire) (Caravaggio)] in the race. He may run that, but he might just let Tom off to ride ours.

“Tom is very keen to ride ours and we're 95% certain we've got him.”

Raymond added of the Richard Fahey trainee's most recent effort, “Richard said he'd got a bit sore–not jarred up–just a bit sore.

“Hopefully the weather will break before the weekend, as he could do with softish ground. You never know this time of year. If it came soft, I would be favouring him a lot. Not just because it is Ascot, but because he is fresher than most.

“He is still a 3-year-old, but he is a mature 3-year-old. I've seen him working and he's good and fresh and he's in top shape.”

Sea La Rosa To The Fore In The Royallieu

Diverted to ParisLongchamp's G1 Qatar Prix de Royallieu after a headline-heavy week, G1 Melbourne Cup victrix Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) was unable to land a telling blow and trailed home seventh behind Sunderland Holdings' Sea La Rosa (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}–Soho Rose {Ire}, by Hernando {Fr}), who added to her pattern-race tally with a career high in the 14-furlong distaffers' feature. The William Haggas trainee arrived at the Bois de Boulogne venue having annexed Goodwood's July 30 G2 Lillie Langtry S. and Deauville's Aug. 21 G2 Prix de Pomone and lobbed along in third until improving one spot at halfway. Launching her bid going well passing the quarter-mile marker, the 13-5 favourite was shaken up with 300 metres remaining and ridden out in the closing stages to assert by a length from Jannah Flower (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}).

“She's been incredible this year, and the backend of last year, and just seems to be getting better with each run,” reflected rider Tom Marquand. “She's got the heart and the talent to see it through and to get a Group 1 on the board for Mrs [Ling] Tsui is amazing. I'm very privileged to be a small part of it. I wouldn't have a clue what the plans are and it doesn't look like she's done yet.”

Christopher Tsui added, “I'm delighted with this victory and also very moved by it. I recall those moments, almost 30 years ago, when I witnessed the success of Urban Sea in the Arc. This story began with her and, since then, it has snowballed via Sea The Stars and his daughters Sea Of Class and Sea La Rosa. Regarding the filly's next race, we will all get together and mull it over, but nothing is decided yet.”

Bred in France by Ecurie des Monceaux, Sea La Rosa is a full-sister to this term's G3 Bahrain Trophy winner Deauville Legend (Ire). She is also a kin to G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial second Dean Street Doll (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and a yearling filly by Golden Horn (GB). Her stakes-winning second dam Soho Rose (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) is a full-sister to G2 Pretty Polly S. victrix and stakes producer Hanami (GB) and a half-sister to the stakes-winning Dubai Rose (GB) (Dubai Destination). The latter produced The Juliet Rose (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), a dual winner of this contest when it held Group 2 status.
