Good Magic’s Curly Jack Takes the Iroquois

Curly Jack became the second graded winner for his freshman sire (by Curlin) with an upset score in the GIII Iroquois S. at Churchill Downs Saturday. Away alertly, the bay raced off the fence in sixth in a tightly bunched pack as 'TDN Rising Star' and second choice in the betting Damon's Mound (Girvin) clocked a :23.53 opening quarter. Favored fellow 'Rising Star' Echo Again (Gun Runner) charged up to confront Damon's Mound as the half went in :47.48. Curly Jack bided his time as the top two knocked heads on the lead with Echo Again slightly in front. Curly Jack ranged up four wide turning for home alongside Jace's Road. Curly Jack hit the front in mid-stretch and kicked clear with Honed overtaking Jace's Road for second.

“I thought going into this race it was a really good field,” winning trainer Tom Amoss said. “I was able to watch Echo Again this summer at Saratoga and he was very impressive when he won up there. I have a ton of respect for Michelle Lovell's horse [Damon's Mound]. I thought maybe going two turns is going to help our chances.”

“It's very special to win my first graded stakes race for Tom,” winning rider Edgar Morales said. “He's done a great job with this horse and I can't be more thankful to him, his entire staff and the owners for allowing me to ride these really nice horses.”

Curly Jack cruised home a four-length winner in his career bow at Churchill Downs June 2. Fading to fifth in Saratoga's GIII Sanford S. July 16, he missed by a head next out in the Ellis Park Juvenile S. Aug. 14.

Curly Jack is the second graded winner for freshman sire and champion juvenile Good Magic, following GII Sorrento S. victress Vegas Magic. He is out of GI Mother Goose S. runner-up Connie and Michael, who is a half-sister to graded winners High Ridge Road (Quality Road) and Senor Rojo (Out of Place). Already the dam of SP Fannie and Freddie (Malibu Moon), Connie and Michael's most recent produce includes a yearling colt by Gun Runner, who summoned $525,000 from the BSW/Crow colts group on day one of the Keeneland September Sale. She did not have a foal in 2022, but was bred back to Yaupon.

Good Magic Represented By First Winner at Churchill

Curly Jack gave his Eclipse-winning young sire Good Magic his first winner with a stylish debut victory at Churchill Downs Thursday afternoon. Given a 4-1 chance, the $180,000 KEESEP acquisition was away without issue from his rail draw and tugged his way up the fence to seize the early advantage, clocking a :22.33 opening quarter. Pressed by Boxster (West Coast) through a :45.62 half-mile, the bay dispatched that foe with ease in the lane, rolling clear to a four-length score.

GISP Connie and Michael is also responsible for the SP 3-year-old filly Fannie and Freddie (Malibu Moon). Her most recent produce is a yearling colt by Gun Runner. Connie and Michael is a half to graded winners High Ridge Road (Quality Road) and Senor Rojo (Out of Place).

Good Magic broke his maiden in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, resulting in an Eclipse Award. The GI Haskell Invitational S. winner stands alongside his sire Curlin at Hill 'n' Dale for $30,000.

Now In Morey Barn, Shotgun Hottie Aiming For Aqueduct’s Ruthless On Feb. 6

Omar Aldabbagh and Jeff Ganje's Shotgun Hottie recently made the move from the barn of Tom Amoss to conditioner William Morey's stable at Belmont Park, recording her first work in the Empire State on Jan. 25 in preparation for the $100,000 Ruthless for sophomore fillies going seven furlongs on Sunday, Feb. 6, at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y.

A bay daughter of Gun Runner, Shotgun Hottie breezed a half-mile over Belmont's dirt training track in 49.78 seconds.

“The work went very well,” Morey said. “I train for the client and have another horse for them at Turfway. They called me and asked if I could take this filly and of course I said yes, so we sent her up to New York. She's easy to train and every horse I've had here has trained well over the training track at Belmont.”

A $45,000 purchase at the Ocala Breeders' Sale of 2-year-olds in training, Shotgun Hottie finished second in her 6 1/2-furlong debut in September at Churchill Downs before ultimately breaking her maiden at third asking when stretching out to 1 1/16 miles at Churchill.

Shotgun Hottie finished fourth last out in the Untapable at Fair Grounds on December 26 in her stakes debut, setting the pace for the mile and 70 yards before tiring and finishing 3 1/2 lengths behind winner North County, who is undefeated in three starts.

Morey's most recent win at the Big A came with 4-year-old filly Blushable, who took down a starter allowance on Jan. 6 for owners Mark Mathiesen, Sandra Benowitz, and Michael House.

“She's doing good and was supposed to run on Saturday but the card was canceled, so we entered her in one of the extras for Thursday and hopefully she gets in,” Morey said.

Blushable earned a career-best 70 Beyer Speed Figure for her allowance win and now boasts a record of 9-3-0-1 with earnings of $99,355.

A new addition to the Morey barn is veteran ridgling American Rule, who was claimed for $32,000 out of a well-beaten 11th in a claimer over a sloppy and sealed track at Aqueduct on Dec. 11. The 7-year-old son of Bernardini made his first start for Morey and new owners Robert Bone and Desperado Stables on Friday, getting back to a fast track and finishing a much-improved third in a one-turn mile claiming event.

“We were happy with his run and he came out of it good,” Morey said. “It was encouraging to see him get back to some of his old form. It looked like he didn't like the mud much the last time. I'm sure we'll look for a similar spot for his next race there at Aqueduct.”

American Rule has four wins from 45 lifetime starts with all but five of those starts occurring at NYRA tracks. Out of the stakes-placed Ghostzapper mare Myriad, American Rule is a half-brother to the multiple graded stakes-placed gelding Markitoff.
