Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Oct. 25, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Sunday running at Tokyo and Kyoto Racecourse, the latter of which plays host to the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger), where the uber-talented Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) looks to follow in his sire’s footsteps in completing the Triple Crown:

MOZU HAPPY ROAD (c, 2, Medaglia d’Oro–Overheard, by Macho Uno) is the latest produce from his dam, who won the GIII Valley View S. sponsored by this breeder in 2013 and the GII Dance Smartly S. the following season. A $425K Keeneland September graduate, the April foal hails from family of Pin Oak’s Grade I-winning juvenile filly Confessional, who–like this colt’s dam sire–was by Holy Bull. 5th-TOK, ¥13,830,000 ($132k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
REFRAME (f, 2, American Pharoah–Careless Jewel, by Tapit) turned in one of the more memorable debuts in recent memory, holding on by a desperate half-length after drifting out dramatically to the outside fence at Niigata July 25 (see below, gate 15). The $410K KEESEP yearling, a daughter of the single-minded GI Alabama S. romper Careless Jewel, has undergone rigorous retraining since and Takuya Kowata, who miraculously stayed in the saddle on debut, keeps the ride this weekend. 5th-KYO, ¥13,400,000 ($128k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800mT
MOZU TREASURE (f, 2, California Chrome–Somethinaboutbetty, by Forestry), whose Maryland-bred dam was a four-time stakes winner and second in the GIII Lake George S., cost $200K as a KEESEP yearling and is a half-sister to GSP Dewey Square (Bernardini) from the same A.P. Indy sire line, as well as SP Something Super (Super Saver). This is also the female family of MGSW Eskenformoney (Eskendereya) and GISW My Trusty Cat (Tale of the Cat). B-Siena Farms LLC (KY)

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. With plenty of US-bred activity ahead, here are the horses of interest for this Saturday running at Kyoto and Tokyo Racecourses, featuring the return to the races of the very exciting 3-year-old filly Lecce Baroque. Sunday’s entrants will appear in Saturday’s TDN:

TAPITAIL (f, 2, Tapit–Lady of Fifty, by After Market) is the most recent produce for her dam, winner of the GI Clement L. Hirsch S. on synthetic and a stakes winner and Grade II placed on conventional dirt. A $975K buyback in foal to this sire at Fasig-Tipton November in 2014, Lady of Fifty was acquired by Teruya Yoshida in 2017 and produced this filly in Kentucky before being sent overseas. The mare was not represented by a foal in 2019 and her weanling colt by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) was purchased for ¥36m ($335,538) at this year’s JRHA Select Sale. B-Teruya Yoshida (KY)

8th-KYO, ¥14,360,000 ($136k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1200m
DUAL CAREER (c, 4, War Front–A Star Is Born {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}), a 475,000gns graduate of the 2017 Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale, has romped in each of his three career starts, all this season, winning by a combined 16 lengths on the dirt course at Mombetsu on the lesser NAR circuit. The impeccably bred bay, a full-brother to SW & MG1SP Fleet Review, is out of a winning full-sister to champion and treble Group 1 winner Rip Van Winkle (Ire) and a half to Italian Group 3 winner Le Vie Infinite (Ire) (Le Vie Dei Colori {GB}). 12th-TOK, ¥21,000,000 ($198k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1400m
LECCE BAROQUE (f, 3, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) looks to give pinhooker Carlo Vaccarezza and Top Line Sales a second Japanese winner in as many weekends, following on the success of Sui (Candy Ride {Arg}) Oct. 3. A $410K Keeneland September yearling turned $525K OBS March breezer, the dark bay could not have been more impressive in graduating by 10 lengths at first asking over this track and distance Feb. 8 and added an equally sparkling nine-length allowance Apr. 25 (see below, gate 10). She was burned up on the pace when the 2-1 second favorite to Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) in the June 21 G3 Unicorn S. (1600m) and makes a much-anticipate return here. Lecce Baroque is out of a half-sister to the late No Mo Dough (Uncle Mo) and MSP Terrific Storm (Storm Cat). B-MMM Stables (KY)

Derby Points on the Line at Toyko

The postponement of the GI Kentucky Derby from May to September forced a reworking of the Road to the Kentucky Derby points races, both at home and abroad. The Japanese component of the series, which offers the highest points-getter an automatic berth in the gate at Churchill Downs, has been extended by two races, and the first of those, the G3 Unicorn S. (1600m), is set for Sunday afternoon at Tokyo Racecourse.

A pair of American-bred imports, each undefeated in two career appearances, figure to dominate the market. Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) walloped a group of newcomers by 10 lengths going a mile and an eighth at first asking at Nakayama in December. The $475,000 OBS March acquisition returned in the Listed Hyacinth S. over Sunday’s course and distance Feb. 23 and rallied from off the pace to best Tagano Beauty (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) by 1 1/4 lengths, earning 30 Kentucky Derby points in the process (see below, gate 3). Boom Australian jockey Damian Lane has the call, but will have to work some magic from the widest berth in the field of 16.

Lecce Baroque (Uncle Mo) gets four pounds from her male rivals and has yet to face a challenge in her young career. A 10-length debut winner over seven panels Feb. 8, the $410,000 Keeneland September purchase turned $525,000 OBSMAR breezer made light work of an allowance field Apr. 25, rolling home by nine lengths untouched (video, gate 10). Christophe Lemaire rides from gate five.

American-conceived Dieu du Vin (Jpn) (Declaration of War) defeated the talented Danon Pharaoh (Jpn) (American Pharoah) on debut over track and distance in October and followed up with a rallying success in the Nov. 23 Cattleya Sho (allowance), the first of the Kentucky Derby points races. Well-beaten in a lone turf start in Group 3 company in April, the son of Jealous Cat (Tapit) overcame a high draw to take a 1600-meter allowance at headquarters May 17. Mirco Demuro is at the controls.

Aurora Tesoro (Malibu Moon) was a close fourth in the Cattleya Sho and was a winner of a seven-furlong test at Hanshin Apr. 4. He was most recently eighth, but not beaten far, behind Satono Rafale (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}) in a similar heat at Kyoto May 3.

The Unicorn offers the top four finishers points on a 40-16-8-4 scale. The final leg of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby is the Japan Dirt Derby (2000m) at Ohi Racecourse July 8.
