Gran Alegria Defends Title In Yasuda Kinen

Gran Alegria (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) should jump a warm favourite to become the first repeat winner of the G1 Yasuda Kinen since two-time Horse of the Year Vodka (Jpn) (Tanino Gimlet {Jpn}) when she squares off against 13 males in Japan's premier spring mile. The Yasuda Kinen serves as a 'Win and You're In' qualifying race for the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in early November.

The 5-year-old, a daughter of Breeders' Cup winner Tapitsfly (Tapit), has won six of eight over the metric mile, having easily accounted for another two-time Horse of the Year in Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in this event last season. She overcame late traffic trouble to add the G1 Mile Championship at Hanshin in November and resumed with a fourth in ground easier than she prefers in the Apr. 4 G1 Osaka Hai (2000m). She most recently decimated her peers in the G1 Victoria Mile over Sunday's course and distance May 16, but reportedly missed a bit of work thereafter and atypically did her final piece of work on the uphill gallop this past Wednesday.

“This is the first time she'll have only two full weeks between races, so her fast work this week was on the hill course and just fast enough to keep her tuned up,” said trainer Kazuo Fujisawa. “I didn't need her to go too fast so, with a horse in front, I told the rider it was fine if she caught him or not. She always tries hard and I think it was a good workout.”

 

Indy Champ (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) took this event in 2019 and ran well to be third last year before being outfinished by the favorite in defence of his title in the Mile Championship. Last seen finishing a good third to Danon Smash (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen over an insufficient six-furlong trip, he gets back out to his pet distance Sunday.

“It won't be easy to beat the Victoria Mile winner,” trainer Hidetaka Otonashi admitted. “I'm hoping he'll rise to the challenge. I've tried many different things, many distances and find ourselves back at the mile. I want him to go out there and win.”

Salios (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), winner of the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity (1600m) at two, was runner-up to Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Satsuki Sho (2000m) and G1 Toyko Yushun (2400m) last season and was a sneaky good fifth from the widest berth in the Mile Championship. Impossibly wide on the turn, he leveled out beautifully in the stretch, sprinting his final 600 metres in a race-fastest :33.1. He also may not have cared for the soft in the Osaka Hai last time.

It has been 10 years since 3-year-old Real Impact (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) stepped up to beat the older milers in the Yasuda Kinen, but Schnell Meister (Ger) (Kingman {GB}) will have support to do so this weekend. Each of his three wins have come over this specialist trip, including a narrow success from barrier 15 in the G1 NHK Mile Cup at headquarters May 9. Incidentally, Lauda Sion (Jpn) became the first Group 1 winner for Real Impact when taking out the 2020 NHK Mile Cup and lines up here on the heels of a victory in the G2 Keio Hai Spring Cup (1400m) at this venue three weeks ago.

Shahryar Noses Out Efforia in Japanese Derby

Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) denied heavy 3-5 favourite and G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) by the narrowest of margins to take the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) at Tokyo on Sunday. It was the record-setting seventh win in that Classic for a son of Deep Impact, whose earlier successes include Deep Brillante (Jpn) (2012), Kizuna (Jpn) (2013), Makahiki (Jpn) (2016), Wagnerian (Jpn) (2018), Roger Barows (Jpn) (2019) and Triple Crown victor Contrail (Jpn) last term.

Sent off at 10-1, Shahryar was rank and tugging for more rein while in close quarters in midpack into the first turn. He was still a touch keen on the backstretch run in between horses as Bathrat Leon (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) cut out fractions of :22.80 for the quarter, :48 flat for the half mile and six furlongs in 1:12.70. Within striking distanceof  the frontrunners approach the far turn, his traffic woes continued and he was forced five deep in the hunt for racing room as the field began to fan wide at the 600-metre mark.

Still boxed in, Shahryar's momentum was halted shortly thereafter and he was steered back towards the centre of the course inside the final quarter mile. Efforia had enjoyed a ground-save trip meanwhile and cut through a gap to take control with 250 metres remaining.

The Sunday Racing colourbearer had finally found his rhythm however, and was firing on all cylinders down the lane as he switched to the favourite's left and saw daylight. The duo matched strides for the final furlong, with the bob at the line going to Shahryar by a nose. Efforia was gallant in defeat and the margin back to Stella Veloce (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) was 1 1/4 lengths. Great Magician (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was another nose back in fourth.

“It's so great to have won the Derby which I had made it my target with this colt ever since his debut,” said pilot Yuichi Fukunaga, who had won Japan's Blue Riband in the past with Wagnerian and Contrail. “We were keeping an eye on the race favorite but the race didn't go as smoothly as planned and we were in a tight spot so we were forced to make our charge late, but this colt really gave a terrific effort.”

A winner of a Kyoto newcomer affair last October, the dark bay ran third to Efforia in the G3 Kyodo News Hai on Valentine's Day making his 4-year-old bow. He returned with a win in Hanshin's G3 Mainichi Hai in a new race record of 1:43.90 for the 1800 metres over firm turf on Mar. 27.

Pedigree Notes
The winner, the 49th Group 1 winner for his late sire, is a full-brother to the 2017 G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas and G1 Osaka Hai victor Al Ain (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), and is one of five winners from six to race for his accomplished dam who landed the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in 2010, the same year she was named Eclipse Champion Female Sprinter Stateside. Sold for $1.1 million to Katsumi Yoshida at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, Dubai Majesty has a 2-year-old colt by Heart's Cry (Jpn) and was covered later that year by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn), but did not produce a foal in 2020. The half-sister to MSW Majestic Dinner (Formal Dinner) was bred to Duramente (Jpn) last spring.

Efforia Gunning For Fantastic Five in Tokyo Yushun

Perfect in four career attempts to this point, including a facile success in the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) (2000mT) last month, Carrot Farm's Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) will jump a warm favourite to take his winning streak to five in Sunday's G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) at the Fuchu Racecourse in the Japanese capitol.

Blessed with excellent tactical speed, Efforia has managed to be a forward factor in each of his races to date, sitting fairly handy to the pace when besting Victipharus (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths in the G3 Kyodo News Hai at headquarters in February, an effort that stamped him as the second-elect for the Satsuki Sho. While Danon the Kid (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}) faltered that afternoon, Efforia sat a cosy inside trip and punched through the gap when it came before streaking home a three-length winner from pace-pressing Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}). Having drawn the paint for the Derby, Efforia should once again enjoy the run of the race Sunday.

“He hasn't dropped his condition since the Satsuki Sho and he's in good shape,” said young jockey Takeshi Yokoyama. “He seems to have become stronger. In his last work, he finished off very well and kept things going until after the winning post, demonstrating his ability. It would be great if I could win the Derby with him.”

Satono Reinas (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will attempt to become the first filly to beat the boys in the Derby since Vodka (Jpn) (Tanino Gimlet {Jpn}) in 2007 and should she succeed, would provide her legendary sire with a fourth straight winner of the race. Winner of her first two tries, including a newcomers' event in June, the bay was nosed out by Sodashi (Jpn) (Kurofune) in the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies in December and flew home in her lone start this term to miss by a neck to the white filly in the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) Apr. 11. She is certain to appreciate this stretch out to the metric 12 furlongs, having passed last week's G1 Yushun Himba.

“I think she'll actually be better suited to this longer trip,” said trainer Sakae Kunieda, who conditioned the great Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}). “I'm excited about the challenge she faces here, and I'm not really thinking about the opponents in the race, but only her performance under these conditions.”

Wonderful Town (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) rallied from off the speed to best Lagom (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) in the G3 Kyoto Nisai S. last November and resumed from a November layoff to win the G2 Aoba Sho over Sunday's course and distance May 1. A victory would give Deep Impact his first Derby winner as a broodmare sire and second overall, joining Kikuka Sho hero Kiseki (Jpn), also a son of Rulership.

Deep Monster (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) looms an interesting longshot proposition. A listed winner over 2200 metres in late February, the son of US MGISW Sisterly Love (Bellamy Road) raced last but one into the final half-mile of the Guineas, was flushed seven or eight wide into the lane and finished up willingly to be seventh, beaten 4 1/2 lengths. He's drawn nicely in four to save some ground this time and the longer trip and, potentially, sounder underfoot conditions could help his chances.

Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: May 29, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Plenty of activity this weekend, so we'll begin with Saturday's runners at Tokyo and Chukyo, where the promising Careerism (Upstart) will try to build on an impressive maiden victory from three weeks ago:

ROARING (f, 3, California Chrome–Warbling, by Unbridled's Song) looks to become the fourth winner from five to race for her dam, winner of the 2010 GII Inside Information S. and placed in the GI Princess Rooney H. and GI Ballerina S. before fetching $1.1 million at Fasig-Tipton November that fall. Warbling's stakes-winning full-sister Arianna's Passion is the dam of MSW & MGSP Distorted Passion (Distorted Humor). Roaring was a $260K purchase at Keeneland September in 2019. 6th-CKO, ¥13,830,000 ($126k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
CAREERISM (c, 3, Upstart–Out of Goodbyes, by Out of Place) ran too good to lose in finishing runner-up in each of his first two trips to the post over the winter and most recently overcame a bit of a slow start from a double-digit gate to graduate by seven lengths over this track and distance in strong time May 8 (see below, gate 14). An $85K FTKNOV weanling purchase, the February foal fetched $120K at FTKJUL in 2019 and $200K as an OBS March breezer last year. Yuichi Fukunaga has a return call. B-Golden Pedigree LLC (KY)

MYTYL (f, 4, Verrazano–Blue Bird Lady, by Congrats) was perfect in two starts going this distance last term, winning her maiden impressively at first asking over this track in February (see below, gate 1) before overcoming an impossible trip to take a one-win class allowance (N1X) from a high draw at Hanshin in June (video, gate 14). A $100K KEENOV weanling and $130K OBSMAR juvenile, Mytyl is out of an unraced half-sister to SW Yes She's A Lady (Yes It's True) and the further female family includes MGISW Pure Clan (Pure Prize), the dam of SW & GSP Princesa Carolina (Tapit); and MGSW Greater Good (Intidab).
