Notable US-Bred and -Sired Runners in Japan: Oct. 30, 2021

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. With plenty activity this weekend, we will serve up two helpings of American-bred and -sired runners, beginning with Saturday's runners at Hanshin and Tokyo. Sunday's featured event is the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn), which will feature 2020 Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), this year's G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero and Derby runner-up Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) and Gran Alegria (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the champion daughter of Breeders' Cup and MGISW Tapitsfly (Tapit):

BAHIR DAR (c, 2, Pioneerof the Nile–Llanarmon, by Sky Mesa) is the third foal from his GII Natalma S.-winning dam, a $240K Keeneland November purchase in foal to Into Mischief in 2017 before being acquired privately by Shadai Farm in 2018. Llanarmon foaled this colt Apr. 28, 2019 and was subsequently bred to Mendelssohn prior to her export to Japan. She foaled a filly by the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winning half-brother to Into Mischief last April. B-Shadai Farm (KY)

5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600mT
TOSEN CHIARA (JPN) (f, 2, American Pharoah–Giulia, by Sky Mesa) is the first produce of a dam who broke her maiden by many at two in Brazil before continuing her career in Uruguay, where she won the G1 Gran Premio de Ciudad de Montevideo on the dirt by 10 1/2 lengths in 2016 (see below, saddle cloth 7). Well beaten in two starts for trainer Michael Matz in this country in 2018, Giulia was acquired privately by this breeder and was covered by American Pharoah before continuing on to Japan. The bay hails from the extended female family of champion Chief's Crown (Danzig), winner of the inaugural GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 1984. B-Takaya Shimakawa

6th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400m
SHIRAKINU (f, 2, Frosted–Meets Expectations, by Valid Expectations), a half-sister to dual-surface GISW and Hill 'n' Dale stallion World of Trouble (Kantharos), SW Money Or Love (J Be K) and SP Alfie Solomons (Kantharos), cost Harry Sweeney's Paca Paca Farm $335K on behalf of Godolphin to buy out breeding partners Darsan Inc. at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The Florida-bred filly's dam is a half-sister to dual GII Woodford S. winner, two-time GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint alum and popular young Florida stallion Bucchero (Kantharos). LADY SHIKA (f, 2, American Freedom–Lakefront, by Deputy Minister) becomes the first Japanese starter for her freshman sire (by Pulpit). The Feb. 18 foal, a half-sister to SW Dattts Our Girl (Thunder Gulch), was produced by an unraced daughter of Lakeway (Seattle Slew), a four-time Grade I winner and runner-up in the 1994 GI Kentucky Oaks and third behind Inside Information (Private Account) in her romping 1995 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff score. Lakeway's SW daughter Sluice (Seeking the Gold) was responsible for GISW Mushka (Empire Maker), second to Life Is Sweet (Storm Cat) in the 1999 GI Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic. Sluice is also the dam of Aqua Julia (Exaggerator), who flew home from far back to graduate at first asking on Santa Anita debut Oct. 8. A $22K short yearling at KEEJAN last year, Lady Chika was RNAd for $45K at KEESEP and fetched $160K from Hideyuki Mori at this year's OBS March after breezing an eighth of a mile in the bullet time of :9 4/5. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. The 3-year-old fillies' Classics concluded with last weekend's G1 Shuka Sho and 3-year-old males get their final chance at Classics glory in Sunday's G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) at Hanshin. SPEED GLAMOUR (f, 2, Into Mischief–Island Escape, by Petionville) debuted with a solid fourth behind the highly promising $4.7-million juvenile colt Dobune (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn} x Premier Stars {Ire}) at Sapporo Sept. 4 and just missed over this course and distance Oct. 10. A $250K Keeneland September buyback turned $500K OBS March breezer (under-tack video), the bay filly is out of a dual stakes winner whose daughter Tricky Escape (Hat Trick {Jpn}) was successful three times at the graded level on the turf. 4th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400m
ADVANCE DREAM (c, 2, Speightstown–Jolene, by Malibu Moon) was acquired for $220K in utero by David Fennelly's Mountmellick Farm and was the last of four KEENOV purchases ($970K gross) in 2018 for the native of County Cork, Ireland. Advance Dream was sold on for $150K as a weanling at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and was retained on a bid of $190K at KEESEP last fall a few months before his half-brother Arabian Prince (Mshawish) finished third in the GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. Advance Dream's stakes-placed dam is out of MSW Velvet Snow (Subordination). B-Mountmellick Farm (KY)

PER AA (f, 2, American Pharoah–Nomee, by City Zip), a $210K graduate of the 2019 KEENOV sale, is out of an unraced half-sister to MGSW Secret Gypsy (Sea of Secrets), whose three other graded placings include a runner-up effort in the 2008 GII Lexus Raven Run S. Secret Gypsy was sold to Shadai Farm for $540K at KEEJAN in 2011 and has produced six winners from as many to start. Her final foal is the unraced 2-year-old colt Herrenchiemsee (Jpn) (Isla Bonita {Jpn}), who fetched the equivalent of $230K at the 2019 JRHA Select Foal Sale. B-Zayat Stables LLC (KY)

CONCH PEARL (f, 2, American Pharoah–A Z Warrior, by Bernardini) finished runner-up on debut behind 'TDN Rising Star' Command Line (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) on the turf at Tokyo June 5 and the form was flattered when the latter resumed from a four-month absence to scoop the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup two weekends ago. Third in a local grass maiden June 26, Conch Pearl most recently broke the track record when graduating by eight lengths over 1700 meters in her first spin on the dirt Sept. 4 (see below, gate 7). The daughter of the 2010 GI Frizette S. heroine, a $340K KEESEP yearling acquisition, cuts back to seven furlongs for this test. B-Triemore Stud (KY)

TOSEN EL DORADO (c, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}–Almudena {Per}, by Silver Planet {Arg}) is out of a winner of the G1 Polla de Potrancas (Peruvian 1000 Guineas) who produced US-bred Peruvian champion grass horse More Than Words (More Than Ready) and champion 3-year-old filly and fellow Potrancas victress Cascanueces (Smart Strike). Almudena, the broodmare of the year in Peru for 2017, was acquired privately by this breeder in 2018 and foaled this colt in April 2019 before being exported to Japan. B-Mr Takaya Shimakawa (KY)

MOODY NILE (f, 2, American Pharoah–Henny Jenney, by Henny Hughes) realized $200K as a Keeneland September yearling last fall, but breezed a quarter-mile in the bullet time of :20 4/5 at OBS March over the winter and was knocked down for $600K, the priciest of her Triple Crown-winning sire's 20 juveniles to sell (22 ring) this year and second most-expensive purchase out of the sale. The Apr. 1 foal is the second from her MSW/GSP dam, a half-sister to MSW & GISP Zeewat (Harlan's Holiday) and SP I'm Wanted (Posse), who is also responsible for Moody Nile's year-older full-brother Primary Colors, a debut third at Belmont this past June. B-Camas Park Stud (KY)

5th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1400mT
CANDY DRIVE (c, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}–Supreme, by Empire Maker), a half-brother to GI Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan H. hero and future Claiborne stallion Silver State (Hard Spun), was led out unsold on a bid of $95,000 at KEESEP last fall, but improved dramatically and realized a final bid of $500K at OBSMAR after working an eighth of a mile in a smooth :10 flat. Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings went to $800K for the SW & GSP Supreme in foal to Giant's Causeway at KEEJAN in 2013. 9th-HSN, ¥30,400,000 ($268k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
JASPER KRONE (c, 2, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25K KEESEP yearling turned $90K OBS March breezer, opened his account with a 1 3/4-length victory at Niigata Aug. 21 (see below, gate 14) and gave a good account of himself when a close third facing winners for the first time at Nakayama Sept. 25. Jasper Krone is the first produce for his stakes-placed dam, a $10K purchase by Machmer Hall out of the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed sale. B-Machmer Hall & Godolphin (KY)

‘Rising Star’ Rounds Out Deep Impact Double In Tokyo

Less than an hour after Profondo (Aus) stamped his authority on the G1 Spring Champion S. at Randwick at just his third career start, 'TDN Rising Star' Command Line (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) followed suit in the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup (1600mT) at Tokyo Racecourse in his second trip to the races and first appearance graduating stylishly over the course and distance June 5.

Sent off the marginal favorite in advance of Sternatia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), a half-sister to Group 1-winning miler Stelvio (Jpn), the athletic colt was allowed to find his feet beneath Christophe Lemaire and settled in fifth position of the seven runners, but noting that longshot Lord Reliable (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) was galloping them along at a walking pace, the Frenchman slipped Command Line a bit of rein and the duo advanced be second through an opening half-mile in :50 flat. Settled nicely in spite of the moderate tempo for the run around the turn, Command Line was held together into the long straight, was felt for with a bit more than 300 metres to travel and outsprinted Sternatia to the line, then galloped out powerfully. Stunning Rose (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) made it a clean sweep for the Sunday Racing colours and breeder Northern Farm.

Pedigree Notes:

While Profondo was becoming the 52nd top-level scorer for Deep Impact in Sydney, Command Line took the late sire's tally to 178 black-type winners and 144 graded/group winners.

A $72,000 purchase by Kim Valerio and Michael Dubb at Keeneland September in 2013, Condo Commando, the 'splash-tastic' winner of the 2014 GI Spinaway S., is a daughter of MGSW Yearly Report who is also the dam of MGSP Checklist (Gone West). Command Line is the third foal from Condo Commando, who was acquired by Katsumi Yoshida for $1.5 million at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Unsurprisingly, the mare's first cover was the legendary Shadai stallion and the result was Al Jannah (Jpn), who fetched nearly $1.5 million as a foal at the 2017 JRHA Select Sale and who has since placed four times at group level. The 3-year-old full-sister, Torre de Mando (Jpn), is a maiden winner from seven runs and Condo Commando is the dam of a yearling filly by Heart's Cry (Jpn) and a weanling Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) filly that was hammered down for $761,188 at this year's foal sale.
