Tapit Trice Earns ‘Rising Star’ Nod At Gulfstream

Unveiled at Aqueduct Nov. 6, Tapit Trice (Tapit) endured a wide trip throughout and was coming on late but had to settle for third just 2 1/2 lengths off the winner. It would be the only time so far that the grey son of Tapit did not find the winner's circle as he rebounded with a narrow victory over a muddy but sealed track Dec. 17 before flying south to Gulfstream to earn his 'TDN Rising Star' nod with an eight-length romp Saturday.

Racing with Lasix for the first time, the $1,300,000 Keeneland September yearling got away evenly from the inside gate but was outsprinted early and switched outside by jockey Luis Saez to race in the clear up the backstretch. Fourth in a tightly-bunched field, the grey held his ground behind a pair of dueling leaders up front, staying wide out on the track as the opening quarter went in :24.25. Up into third by the time the leaders began to swing around the far turn, Tapit Trice surged forward under a hand ride past the quarter pole to join his stablemate, the 4-5 favorite Shesterkin (Violence), for the lead. The pair matched strides for only a few yards before Tapit Trice went on with it into the final furlong, running up the score late for the clear victory as the 6-5 second choice.

The 51st 'Rising Star' for prolific sire Tapit, Tapit Trice is out of a graded-stakes placed half-sister to MGISW Jaywalk (Cross Traffic). Danzatrice returned to Tapit twice more since producing Tapit Trice, producing back-to-back full-sisters in 2021 and 2022 with the 2-year-old being a $1,100,000 purchase by Whisper Hill Farm at last year's Keeneland September Sale. Danzatrice is due back to Tapit for yet another full-sibling in 2023.

This is the female family of MGSW Interactif (Broken Vow), GSP Stretching (Red Ransom), and the extended family of GSW Etonian (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), GISP Ocho Ocho Ocho, and MGSW Divine Oath (Broken Vow). Chad Brown sends her to post. The dam is a half-sister to Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies victress Silvercents (Goldencents). Not unexpectedly, the morning line has Conquistar tabbed as the 6-5 favorite. TJCIS PPs

Coolmore's JUST SO (Justify) will lead the field to post for his debut off a steady stream of works in South Florida for trainer Chad Brown. He is a son of MGISW Turbulent Descent, who also raced in the Coolmore colors before selling in foal to War Front for $2.45 million at KEENOV in 2014. His third dam is the MGIW Gorgeous (Slew o'Gold), the dam of MGSW winner Stunning (Nureyev). The Stuart S. Janney III homebred Windsor Park (Mastery) debuts for trainer Shug McGaughey and represents a long line of beautifully bred Janney runners, including his Grade I-winning dam and Grade I-winning granddam Deputation (Deputy Minister), who herself produced the dam of MGSW Criminologist (Maria's Mon). Ghost Coast (Street Sense) drew the far outside for his debut for trainer Brendan Walsh. Harrell Ventures and Starlight Racing LLC paid $250,000 for this colt as a KEESEP yearling. Friday Insights: Full To Bellafina Makes Belated Debut

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency

4th-GP, $84K, Msw, 4yo/up, 6f, 1:38 p.m.

Though making a belated debut as a 4-year-old, LAKOTA TERRITORY (Quality Road), bred in a partnership by Whisper Hill Farm, Three Chimneys, and JSM Equine, gets his chance to add to his family's legacy Friday out of the Todd Pletcher barn. Out of the Malibu Moon mare Akron Moon, the bay is a full-brother to MGISW Bellafina who brought a final bid of $4,000,000 from Coolmore's M V Magnier in foal to Tiz the Law at last fall's Fasig-Tipton Night of the Stars sale. Bellafina's first foal, a weanling filly by Uncle Mo, sold to Paramount Bloodstock for $1.35 million at the same sale. Also under Akron Moon is another full-sibling to Lakota Territory in MSW and MGSP Diamond King. She'll be represented this year by a 2-year-old Curlin colt who sold for $400,000 to Repole Stable & St. Elias Stables at the 2022 Keeneland September Sale. Recently crowned Eclipse winner Irad Ortiz, Jr. picks up the mount for owner JSM Equine LLC.

Another making a late start is A La Carte (Uncle Mo), a 5-year-old out of Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Leigh Court (Grand Slam). The Speedway Stables homebred recently turned in a bullet work for trainer Bill Mott, going five furlongs in 1:01 3/5 (1/5) Jan. 15. TJCIS PPS
