The homebred tracked just to the inside of favorite Beanpot (Into Mischief) as the leader clocked a quarter in :21.77. Cutting to the outside just before the top of the lane, the 3-year-old unleashed a barrage down the center of the course and won over the pacesetter by 3 3/4 lengths. The winner is a half-sister to Danse Macabre (Army Mule), GSW, $957,090. A half-sister to MGSW/MGISP Cambodia (War Front), Sylphide produced a 2-year-old filly by Always Dreaming and a yearling filly by Army Mule. She was bred back to that same sire for this spring. Crimson Light Rolls Into ‘TDN Rising Star’ Station After Debut At Aqueduct

Achieving the mark of 'TDN Rising Star' means that you have done something out of the ordinary. Though he may have been green at the start of Aqueduct's fourth race on a slop-filled Sunday afternoon, by the time it was over, Crimson Light (c, 3, City of Light–Crimson Frost, by Stormy Atlantic) proved he earned the title. The colt definitely fit the mold when he came back from a seemingly insurmountable distance to graduate.

The Todd Pletcher trainee debuted with Lasix as the even-money choice here, but he hopped so badly at the start that he spotted the field at least 15 lengths. With Kendrick Carmouche aboard, the bay steadily began to pick up steam into the far turn even though the cameras were focused on the leaders. Rolling from the back of the pack, the bay moved to the center of the course down the lane, briefly was bumped by Shore Time (Not This Time), but was able to get up in the shadow of the wire. A claim of foul by Shore Time's rider was dismissed by the stewards and the result stood.

Crimson Light is his dam's first offspring, but he does have a 2-year-old unraced half-brother named Guns and Ships (Gun Runner), who was purchased for $310,000 by Greg Tramontin at Keeneland September. Crimson Frost initially went to S.F. Henderson for $10,000 at '15 Keeneland September before selling to Amy Moore for $250,000 at the '20 Keeneland November Sale while the winner was in-utero.

This is the fourth 'Rising Star' for sire City of Light, with the last being GISW Fierceness, who is a Eclipse Award finalist for the 2-Year-Old Colt category.

Sunday Insights: Pair Of Pletcher Firsters Do Battle On The Gulfstream Grass

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has a pair of newly-minted 3-year-old fillies heading to the post for their debuts over the turf in the Sunday finale in Hallandale.

First, EL MEGEETH (Constitution) makes her first start for Shadwell Stable. Bred by Three Chimneys, the $750,000 Keeneland September purchase is out of Amour d'Ete (Tiznow), who Borges Torrealba Holdings acquired as the third topper at the same sale back in 2013 for $1.75 million. Her most notable produce is GI Preakness S. champ Early Voting (Gun Runner).

Second dam and Canadian 2-year-old champion Silken Cat (Storm Cat) also produced Amour d'Ete's full-sister, MGSW Irap, plus recently deceased sire of sires Speightstown (Gone West) and the dam of G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 victor Capezzano (Bernardini).

Drawn to the extreme outside is the other half of Pletcher's uncoupled entry–Lady Madonna (War Front). A $675,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale buy for Robert and Lawana Low, the SF Bloodstock bred filly is out of GI Central Bank Ashland S. heroine Rosalind (Broken Vow). She had a 2-year-old colt by Twirling Candy sell to Willie Browne for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Sale and sent to Ireland, and a yearling filly by Tapit go for $450,000 to Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds at Keeneland's November Sale. Annapolis Retired to Claiborne Farm for 2024

'TDN Rising Star' Annapolis (War Front–My Miss Sophia, by Unbridled's Song), winner of the 2022 GI Coolmore Turf Mile S. in a stakes-record time of 1:33.29 at Keeneland, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., for the 2024 breeding season.

A graded stakes winner at two and three in the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, Annapolis earned over $1.5 million as a homebred for Bass Racing. Annapolis was produced by My Miss Sophia, winner of the GII Gazelle S. and runner-up in the GI Kentucky Oaks. Carrying Annapolis, My Miss Sophia brought $4 million from agent Steve Young on behalf of the Bass family at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale.

“Annapolis has been a star since the day he was born,” said Claiborne Farm President Walker Hancock. “Being a $4 million in utero purchase, the bar was high and he lived up to his lofty expectations. He was a graded stakes winner at two, a record-setting Grade I winner at three, and hails from an incredible dirt family.”

Hancock continued, “His dam was a graded stakes winner on dirt and was runner up in the Kentucky Oaks. Also in the family are Florida Derby winner Materiality, Alabama winner Embellish the Lace, and Travers winner Afleet Express. With his imposing physique, we believe his offspring will be a success in the sales ring and on the racetrack.”

Annapolis, winner of the 2021 GII Pilgrim S. and 2022 GIII Saranac S., will stand for a fee of $12,500 LFSN.
