TOBA National Awards Announces 2023 Finalists

The winners, finalists, and official sponsors for this year's TOBA National Awards were announced Friday by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

The National Awards Dinner will be held Saturday, Sept. 9 at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, KY and the National Awards Luncheon, which honors breeders from 20 states and Canada, will be held Friday, Sept. 8 at WinStar Farm.

The finalists for the National Owner of the Year are Peter M. Brant, Godolphin, Hronis Racing, Klaravich Stables, and Winchell Thoroughbreds.

The three finalists for the National Breeder of the Year are Godolphin, Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings LLC., and Summer Wind Equine.

David O’Farrell Elected Chairman of TOBA’s Board of Trustees

David O'Farrell has been elected as chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's Board of Trustees. Also joining O'Farrell on the Board of Trustees to serve
three-year terms as new members are Joe Appelbaum, Michael Banahan, Everett Dobson, Mandy Pope and R. Glenn Sikura.

Re-elected to three-year terms were current trustees Shannon Arvin, Jeffrey Bloom, Marette Farrell, Brant Laue, Garrett O'Rourke, and Stephen Screnci.

“It's an honor and a privilege to lead an organization that deeply cares about the economics and integrity of horse racing on behalf of owners and breeders,” O'Farrell said.

Following its annual members meeting, the TOBA Board of Trustees met to elect officers for the association.

Officers named for 2023-2024 are: David O'Farrell, chairman, Everett Dobson, vice-chairman, Dan Metzger, president; Doug Cauthen, secretary; and Garrett O'Rourke, treasurer.

The TOBA Board also approved the appointment of Alex Solis II to the American Graded Stakes Committee.

The 2023-2024 committee is comprised of TOBA members Everett Dobson (chair), Barbara Banke, Walker Hancock, Brant Laue, David O'Farrell, and Alex Solis II and racing officials Dan Bork (Churchill Downs and Ellis Park) Frank Gabriel (NYRA), Rick Hammerle (Kentucky Downs), Chris Merz (Santa Anita Park), and Tora Yamaguchi (Del Mar).

TOBA Hosts Sept. National Awards Dinner At Fasig-Tipton

The 38th annual TOBA National Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington, Kentucky, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association said in a release Friday.

The evening honors owners and breeders from 22 states and Canada. Also recognized are the National Owner of the Year, National Owner Finalists, National Breeder of the Year, National Breeder of the Year Finalists, Small Breeder of the Year, Broodmare of the Year, Cot Campbell Racing Partnership of the Year, Dr. J. David Richardson Industry Service Award, Rood & Riddle Sport Horse of the Year, National HBPA Claiming Crown Horse of the Year and recipient of the Robert N. Clay Award.

“It is a tremendous honor for TOBA to recognize and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of 2022 from Thoroughbred racing's leading owners and breeders, as well as our other award winners,” said Dan Metzger, president of TOBA.

TOBA Releases Saratoga Educational Seminar Dates

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association outlined the Saratoga Educational Seminar, set for Aug. 17-18. The seminar is among a calendar of events featuring various topics for prospective, new, and established Thoroughbred owners and breeders.

The 2023 seminars are listed below:

  • June 23-24 – Woodbine – Toronto, Canada
  • July 27-28 – Del Mar Thoroughbred Club-Del Mar, California
  • Aug. 17-18 – Saratoga-Saratoga Springs, New York
  • Oct. 23 – Lexington, Kentucky

Details for each seminar will be announced closer to the event. Seminars for this year will cover topics pertaining to both Thoroughbred owners and breeders. Topics may include racing and stable management, common training practices, common breeding practices, owner and trainer communications, horse selection with a bloodstock agent, partnerships, conformation analysis, and equine business. Educational seminars are open to both members and non-members, with discounts for members of TOBA or any hosting/sponsor organizations. Meals, materials, and a TOBA gift bag are included with registration.
