Curlin’s Erna Just Holds On To Graduate At Second Asking

10th-Gulfstream, $60,000, Msw, 12-11, 2yo, f, 1mT, 1:35.11, fm, neck.

ERNA (f, 2, Curlin–Jumby Bay {MSP, $118,125}, by City Zip) just missed in her unveiling at Belmont's Aqueduct meeting Oct. 22, coming up a neck short to next out GIII Jimmy Durante S. winner Liguria (War Front) as an 11-1 longshot. No longer under the radar at 6-5, the $600,000 OBSAPR grad took contact from both sides at the break but was still able to settle forwardly placed in third as Shez Speightful (Speightster) paced the field through an opening quarter in :23.18. Up into second while two wide around the far turn, Erna fanned out to the five path for the stretch run but drifted in late, just managing to hold off a hard-charging Penumbras Maker (Empire Maker) to graduate by a neck. Jumby Bay has since produced a yearling colt by Uncle Mo and visited Tiz the Law for the 2023 season. Sales History: $135,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP; $600,000 2yo '22 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $55,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Bellafina Brings $4 Million at Fasig

MGISW Bellafina (Quality Road)'s first foal by Uncle Mo went for $1.35 million earlier in the session at Fasig-Tipton November and, as expected, the $1.6-million earner was plenty popular herself in the ring, ultimately garnering a winning bid of $4 million from Coolmore's M.V. Magnier. The 6-year-old was offered in foal to young MGISW Tiz the Law and consigned to the sale by Eaton Sales as hip 264. The Coolmore partners had co-campaigned Bellafina with original owner Kaleem Shah towards the end of her career. She was an $800,000 FTFMAR buy by Shah.

Uncle Mo Tops Coolmore Roster at $150,000 for 2023

Uncle Mo will once again top the Coolmore America roster at $150,000 for the 2023 breeding season, the same fee at which he stood in 2022, according to a press release from Coolmore Wednesday morning. The 14-year-old stallion was the sire of 10 black-type winners in 2022, including the GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal.

Justify, who had four black-type winners from his first crop in 2022, will stand for the farm's second highest-fee, at $100,000, the same as in 2022. He is currently the third-leading first-crop sire by earnings.

American Pharoah, who was the sire of four GI winners in 2022, gets a trim from $80,000 to $60,000.

Mendelssohn, having a strong first year at stud and currently seventh on the first-crop sires list in North America by earnings, will see his fee drop from $35,000 to $25,000.

The farm offers three new stallions in 2023: Corniche, who will stand for $30,000; Preakness winner Early Voting at $25,000; and Golden Pal, whose post-Breeders' Cup retirement was announced Wednesday morning, and will stand alongside his sire, Uncle Mo, at a fee to be determined after the Breeders' Cup.
