Justify Filly Looks To Fire Fresh For Fipke at Fair Grounds

Charles Fipke homebred JUSTIFY PERFECTION (Justify) is a half-sister to four winners from six to the races, including three to have earned black-type, namely GI Natalma S. runner-up Stormy Perfection (Tale of the Cat)–the dam of the Irish stakes-placed Stormy Entry (Point of Entry)–SP Perfection Cat (Tale of the Cat) and MSP Perfect Silent Cat (Tale of the Cat). The unraced dam Silent Perfection (Perfect Soul {Ire}) is a daughter of the beautifully bred Silence Beauty (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), herself responsible for Fipke's GI Wood Memorial S. hero Tale of Ekati (Tale of the Cat) and GSW Tale of Silence (Tale of the Cat). The GI Alabama S.-winning third dam Maplejinsky (Nijinsky II) produced champion and Filly Triple Crown heroine Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}). She'll have to beat Rigney Racing's Tipsy Tammy (Arrogate), a $600,000 KEESEP yearling who was second–and better than 10 lengths ahead of the third–when second on debut to 'TDN Rising Star' Impel (Quality Road) over this course and distance Jan. 1. Second Chances: $600k Arrogate Filly Tipsy Tammy ‘As Advertised’

In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.

Tipsy Tammy (f, 3, Arrogate–Peggy May, by Lemon Drop Kid) ran a winning race on debut. She just didn't win.

Those were the words of trainer Phil Bauer, who saddled the highly regarded $600,000 Keeneland September Yearling purchase to a strong second-place finish behind 'TDN Rising Star' Impel (Quality Road) on debut at Fair Grounds Jan. 1.

Sporting a pair of bullet breezes on her worktab, the Rigney Racing colorbearer wasn't much of a secret and was off as the 4-5 favorite in the six-furlong affair.

Tipsy Tammy jumped well from post three and battled for command from an outside second with Impel in hot pursuit in third through an opening quarter in a sharp :21.89. Tipsy Tammy poked her head in front as Impel began to wind up with a flashy sweep on the far turn.

Tipsy Tammy fought on gamely along the rail as they straightened for home, but couldn't match strides with the Brad Cox-trained Juddmonte homebred down the lane. Impel crossed the wire 3 1/4 lengths to the good and it was another 10 3/4 lengths back to the distant third-place finisher.

Tipsy Tammy earned a 77 Beyer Speed Figure for the effort.

“Really thought she ran really well,” Bauer said. “Progression and maturity, she should move forward, hopefully.”

He continued, “It was as advertised. Obviously, when you spend that kind of money, you hope they turn out to be something special. She indicated that to us in the mornings and everybody was on to her as well. I think that was the reason for the short price.

Brad (Cox)'s horse shipped in from Kentucky, so maybe a little bit of camouflage there. No shame in running second to something like that. Visually, I thought they both ran winning efforts. They just got the better of us.”

Tipsy Tammy will look to go one better in her second career start in a six-furlong, $57,000 maiden special weight at Fair Grounds next Thursday. With a five-furlong bullet in 1:00 4/5 (1/12) under her belt in the interim, the 8-5 morning-line favorite has drawn widest of all in post seven. Mitchell Murrill will be at the controls once again.

Phil Bauer & Richard Rigney | Keeneland

“Who knows? Sometimes it's beneficial to get two starts in the maiden ranks and try and get some more seasoning before you take on winners,” Bauer said.

“She's put together really well and a very efficient mover. Obviously, you always hope that they'll stretch out a little bit in distance, which I think she will based on her training. We thought coming back in a three-quarter event would be the right move to try and get the maiden broke, then probably point towards something at Keeneland.”

Bred in Kentucky by Sierra Farm, Tipsy Tammy hails from the third and final crop of the much-missed Arrogate, who is already responsible for five Grade I winners, led by the recently crowned champion 3-year-old Arcangelo. She was the highest-priced yearling filly by Arrogate to sell in 2022 and the third most expensive overall of 61 yearlings by the late Hall of Famer to change hands that year.

The half-sister to MSW Doc Boy (Into Mischief) was produced by Peggy May, an unraced daughter of champion grass mare Perfect Sting (Red Ransom). The Adena Springs-bred Peggy May brought $170,000 from breeder Sierra Farm while in foal to Awesome Again at the 2014 Keeneland November sale.

Quality Road’s Impel The First ‘Rising Star’ Of 2024

Racing fans didn't have to wait long for the New Year's first 'TDN Rising Star' as Juddmonte homebred Impel (Quality Road) sat off hot early fractions and pounced into the lane to graduate at first asking Monday.

Facing a field of mostly first-time starters, all making their 3-year-old debuts, Impel took money into the teeth of race favorite Tipsy Tammy (Arrogate), breaking at 7-2 and going right out to be three wide with that rival along with Golden Degree (Goldencents) on the rail. That trio sped through an opening quarter in :21.89 and Impel had work to do to keep up around the far turn. Patiently handled under Florent Geroux, the homebred got back onto even terms passing the quarter pole and, as the rest of the field faded behind him, took Tipsy Tammy into the final sixteenth before clearing away to hit the wire alone. The first two fillies were nearly 11 lengths clear of the rest of the group which included fellow first-timer Who's Ticket (Quality Road).

Impel is the first foal out of SW/GSP Your Love, who was purchased by Juddmonte for $480,000 out of the 2019 Keeneland November Sale in foal to More Than Ready. Your Love is a full-sister to GSW/GISP Economic Model and a half to MSW/GSP Jimmy Simms (Lost Soldier), GSW/GISP Happy American (Runhappy) and GSW/GISP Well Monied (Maria's Mon), who herself produced the dam of GSW/MGISP Will's Secret (Will Take Charge) and GSP Ben Diesel (Will Take Charge). After losing her 2022 War Front foal, Your Love produced a Curlin filly last year and was bred to Not This Time for 2024.

Monday Insights: New 3-Year-Olds Look To Graduate On New Year’s Day

6th-FG, $52K, Msw, 3yo, f, 6f, 4:15 p.m.

Starting the New Year off in Louisiana, WHO'S TICKET (Quality Road) is a daughter of champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi, a mare who has changed hands for sums of $6m, $3.2m and most recently in 2021 when Three Chimneys Farm went to $1.15m for her. Who's Ticket, herself a $450,000 weanling, is a half to SW Courvoisier (Tapit). Take Charge Brandi has seen her branch of the family tree grow more fruitful recently with the success of her half-brother, freshman sire Omaha Beach (War Front), at stud. And of course, third dam Take Charge Lady needs no introduction as the dam of champion 3-year-old colt Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song), GISW and sire Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy) and GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah). Her daughter also produced MGSW/GISP Charge It (Tapit)

Juddmonte homebred Impel (Quality Road) debuts for trainer Brad Cox. The filly is the first foal out of stakes-winning Your Love (Flatter) who was purchased by Juddmonte for $480,000 out of the 2019 KEENOV sale. Your Love is a full-sister to GSW/GISP Economic Model and a half to MSW Jimmy Simms (Lost Soldier), GSW/GISP Happy American (Runhappy) and GSW/GISP Well Monied (Maria's Mon).

Tipsy Tammy (Arrogate), a $600,000 KEESEP yearling for Rigney Racing, is a half to MSW Doc Boy (Into Mischief) along with three other winners from as many to race. Second dam Perfect Sting, 2000's champion grass mare, also produced GSW Smart Sting (Smart Strike). TJCIS PPS

4th-SA, $65K, Msw, 3yo, 1m, 4:32 p.m.

Out west, a pair of Baffert colts look to improve on their 2023 starts led by Imagination (Into Mischief). The $1.05m yearling has raced twice at Del Mar through the fall, just missing by a neck most recently over the same distance Dec. 2. The colt is a half to MSW Exulting (Tapit) and a full-brother to GSW/GISP Occult.

Also looking to improve for Baffert is Cornell (Into Mischief), a $675,000 yearling who stretches out to the mile off a non-factoring ninth on debut at Del Mar Nov. 25.

John Sadler brings back Indispensable (Constitution) who ran second to 'TDN Rising Star' Coach Prime (Quality Road) last out at Del Mar Nov. 10 in his third start since bringing $825,000 at KEESEP last year.

The only debut runner in the field, Leading (Uncle Mo) is a Repole Stable homebred out of SW/GISP Savings Account. The dam, purchased by Repole for $800,000 in 2018 from FTKNOV, has already produced a winner from her first foal. TJCIS PPS
