Into The ‘Stradosphere’

It is almost unimaginable to think that this year's Yorkshire Cup, Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup or Lonsdale Cup will be run without Stradivarius (Ire). His appearance in those races had become a near constant occurrence for the past number of years and in an industry where retiring a stallion prospect at two is not out of the question we should count ourselves lucky that we were able to witness the striking son of Sea The Stars (Ire)'s prowess on the racecourse for so long. Having now swapped Newmarket Heath for the green pastures of The National Stud, as he begins his stallion career, the draw of Bjorn Neilson's superstar has not been lost.

“Everybody across the world knew about Stradivarius,” says Joe Bradley, the recently appointed Head of Bloodstock Operations at the stud. “But here in Newmarket in particular, he was a huge personality on the heath and he's a very important horse to a lot of people.” It may seem a daunting task to take on a celebrity of the racing ranks and maybe even more so when a horse whose career like Stradivarius's may not necessarily be what every breeder is after but the team at The National Stud are confident in the horse, allowing his credentials to speak for themselves.

“We don't shy away from what he achieved,” said Bradley when reminiscing on Stradivarius's racing career. “We're proud of it. He finished races in a way that most horses couldn't. People understood the quality he has. He's by an amazing stallion, he's got a fantastic pedigree. He's got the race performance, and physically he's an exceptional animal.”

By allowing the facts to do the talking Stradivarius has been well received so far with “a range of breeders that provide mares from a range of distance, from six furlongs right up to a mile and a half,” booking a nomination. Given the mix of owner-breeders and commercial breeders that have expressed interest in Stradivarius, the team behind the horse have every reason to be optimistic for his future at stud with a book of over 100 mares coming together nicely.

“It's been such an interesting process and it's been great seeing the confidence that breeders have for Stradivarius,” Bradley added.

There is no doubt that launching a new stallion brings fresh enthusiasm and excitement, but it is hard to imagine that The National Stud has been lacking in those departments given the other stallions on their roster. Time Test (GB)'s first crop made a huge impression on the track and “he covered 160 mares in 2021.” There were a few key performers for the stallion last year with one of note in particular.

“He's got some leading horses for the big races in the summertime,” said Bradley. “What we're really looking forward to is Crypto Force (GB), who is with John Gosden now, making his seasonal return.”

Another on the roster who impressed with his first, albeit small, crop was Rajasinghe (Ire).

“He has been an amazing horse for Phil Cunningham,” said Bradley. “He won the G2 Coventry [S.] in the fastest time. And now, I think people are starting to connect those dots because he's had an amazing first crop with 80% winners to runners with horses that have really shown a good turn of foot.”

Rounding off the quartet is Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) who has his first crop of foals this year. Of course, that is not the only interesting fact about the son of Lope De Vega (Ire).

“Lope Y Fernandez is a horse that we're hugely excited by,” said Bradley. “We are in a great partnership with Nick Bradley and Whitsbury Manor. And what we're doing is combining what we have, to give him every chance to be a very successful stallion.”

Of his first-born foals, so far, Bradley remarked, “They are exactly what we thought they would be. We've been telling breeders that Lope Y Fernandez will put plenty of bone and quality into your mare and into the progeny and that's exactly what we've got.”

Like the stallions around him, Bradley seems very at ease in his new role which “incorporates a variety of things that are directly related to the farm and also dealing with clients, sales and nominations.”

Starting at a time with the promise of so much growth is not lost of the Irish native who cited it as “very poignant” to be working alongside the likes of Stradivarius. As both embark on what should hopefully be a long and fruitful career, perhaps going the distance isn't such a bad thing after all.

Time Test’s Crypto Force Battles To Beresford Triumph

Amo Racing's £900,000 Goffs London graduate Crypto Force (GB) (Time Test {GB}–Luna Mare {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) bounced back from a first reversal, when seventh in Royal Ascot's June 18 Listed Chesham S., to loosen Aidan O'Brien's stranglehold on Saturday's G2 Alan Smurfit Memorial Beresford S. over one mile at the Curragh. He had earlier accounted for subsequent 'TDN Rising Star' and G2 Golden Fleece S. victor Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in his June 1 debut over seven furlongs here and employed patient tactics at the tail of the five-strong field through halfway. Making smooth headway in the straight to go second passing the quarter-mile marker, the 15-2 chance hit the front with 150 yards remaining and drew clear under a drive to subdue Ballydoyle's 4-7 favourite Adelaide River (Ire) (Australia {GB}) by 2 1/4 lengths for a first stakes rosette. Jim Bolger's Young Ireland (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) finished four lengths further adrift in third.

“I'm delighted for Kia Joorabchian and Amo Racing, because Kia's been a big supporter of mine this year and has let me go away to the breeze-ups and buy some nice horses,” said Michael O'Callaghan. “I bought this lad myself and when he won his maiden I told Kia he was going to the London Sale. He didn't force me to sell the horse to him at home, I brought him to the sale and he paid a lot of money for him. The pressure was very much on me from that point on and it was a massive kick in the guts at [Royal] Ascot. It wasn't to be, he just needed that bit more time and Kia has been very patient. I thought he wanted a mile-and-a-quarter, looking at his homework, and that's why I was happy to see a bit of rain to make the mile a test. He'll be better on fast ground and could make up into a Guineas horse over the winter, but we won't get carried away with ourselves yet. He won that very well, so I'll go back and sit down and talk to Kia. It would be nice to just put him away and train him with next year in mind.”

Crypto Force, who becomes the third group-race winner for his second-crop sire (by Dubawi {Ire}), is full to a yearling colt out of a winning full-sister to the dam of dual stakes-winning G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil third Jeri (Fr) (Lawman {Fr}). Crypto Force's third dam is Listed Oaks Trial victrix Baraka (Ire) (Danehill), from the family of G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}) and G1 Lockinge S. victor Creachadoir (Ire) (King's Best), is a full-sister to Japanese champion Fine Motion (Ire) and kin to multiple Group 1-winning sire Pilsudski (Ire) (Polish Precedent).

Time Test’s Rocchigiani Battles To G3 Thoroughbred Triumph

Goodwood may not have attracted as big an international contingent as last month's Royal Ascot festival, but Thursday's G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. was very much a continental affair as Germany's G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) second Rocchigiani (GB) (Time Test {GB}–Ronja, by El Corredor) showed his class to garner the 3-year-old one-mile test. Last term's G3 Zukunftsrennen victor, who ran fifth in the Royal meet's June 18 G3 Jersey S. last time, was positioned in second as Norway's Norsk 2000 Guineas hero Hotline Bling (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) established a clear lead through halfway. Cruising closer on the bridle in the straight to challenge hard on the steel passing the quarter-mile marker, the well-backed 11-2 chance quickened smartly to seize control approaching the final furlong and was driven out in the closing stages to bravely hold The Wizard Of Eye (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) and Sonny Liston (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}) by 3/4-of-a-length and the same.

“Rocchigiani is a nice horse, he travelled well in the race and the pace was good for him,” said winning trainer Peter Schiergen after the local stewards allowed the finishing order to remain unchanged. “His form in Germany was very good, he's a speed horse and he likes leading horses. The owners [Stall Domstadt] like Goodwood and always come here and this is my first winner here today. We have not had many runners and it is not easy to do. I looked from race to race after [Royal] Ascot and we will chat about what to do now. His last race was seven furlongs, but the mile is a little better for him. Maybe we will come back to England next.”

Winning rider Tom Marquand, who incurred a three-day sting for his alleged transgressions in the closing stages, added, “Rocchigiani ran well when fifth in the Jersey. He looked like he had a good bit of speed, so when Hotline Bling burst clear, I was happy to sit and use that injection of speed to go and win the race. It got a little bit messy at the two-furlong pole when the leader weakened, but this horse has travelled over really well for the Peter Schiergen team and it is a job well done. I was never really worried about the ground with his action. He is probably more used to cut in the ground, but it just shows that what they are used to is not always what they want.”

“The Wizard Of Eye has run a fantastic race,” reflected the second's trainer Stan Moore. “He is still, as you can see, a very big horse and James [Doyle] said that he was still a little bit raw. He is 17 1 1/2hh and there's not many Flat horses that size. We missed the last two-and-a-half months with him because he started early and ran good in the Saudi Derby and he will come on. We will probably do a little bit of a winter campaign again, but I think there's a hell of a lot more to come from the horse and we will probably have to wait until next year to see that.”

Sonny Liston's trainer Charlie Hills said, “He travelled really nicely and I was really pleased. After running in the Derby, we gave him a bit of time off and brought him right back in trip. I am delighted with him.”

Hotline Bling was the main victim of scrimmaging in the latter stages and his owner Hans Christian Valstad commented, “It is just a victory to be here. For this to happen is a bummer, but we're delighted to be here in the UK. Back home in Norway, the winner of the race would have been scratched. He impacted my horse quite heavily and Hotline Bling's jockey had to be pull him up and lost several lengths. For us back home, he would have finished fourth at least, but it is what it is. It's okay and you can't change the rules. We have a dream to go to Royal Ascot at some point and, when we got invited to Goodwood, it only took me two minutes to say 'let's go' as you need to take the opportunity.”

Rocchigiani, one of two pattern-race and an overall five black-type winners for Newmarket's National Stud resident Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), is the sixth foal and scorer from as many runners produced by Listed Dusseldorfer Henkel-Stutenpreis victrix Ronja (El Corredor), herself kin to the dam of GII Knickerbocker S. third En Wye Cee (Declaration Of War). The May-foaled bay is a half-brother to stakes-winning G2 Godolphin Mile runner-up and dual G3 Burj Nahaar placegetter Ross (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and a yearling filly by Iffraaj (GB).

Time Test Leads Goffs Online Breeding Rights Catalogue

An online sale of three stallion breeding rights, in Time Test (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Territories (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus]), was announced by Goffs on Wednesday. Bidding opens on the timed sale after the last mare is sold during the Goffs February Sale on Thursday, Feb. 10, and closes at 12 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11. Entries are still being accepted by Goffs. The leading first-season sire by black-type winners, Time Test has sired the Group 1-placed Sunset Shiraz (Ire) and the Group 3 winners Romantic Time (GB) and Rocchigiani (GB), as well as the listed duo of Tardis (GB) and The King's Horses (GB). He stands for £15,000 at The National Stud this year.

Darley's Territories sired pricy auction purchase Rougir (Fr), who won the G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines last year and also counts the group placed Masseto (GB) and Rhoscolyn (GB) among his progeny. He commands £10,000 at Dalham Hall Stud.

Tops for first-season sires with winners (35) in 2021, Cotai Glory counts G2 Prix Robert Papin winner Atomic Force (Ire) among his best runners. The chestnut, who stands at Tally-Ho Stud for €8,500 this season, also has sired the group placed Pearl Glory (Ire), Eldrickjones (Ire) and the listed winner Purciaretta (Ire).

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “Goffs Online was first introduced to the market in 2020 and since its inception it has proven a market leading platform. We have used it to aid our live auctions on both sides of the Irish Sea as well as hosting timed online sales which has seen it sell horses up to £300,000.

“We have secured the sale of breeding rights to three very promising young sires which have strong commercial appeal and this online auction enhances the extensive offering at our three-day Goffs February Sale next week. This online sale will open at the conclusion of the final day of breeding stock and if breeders wish to discuss adding any additional breeding rights to the sale, we invite them to contact a member of the Goffs team. This new departure for Goffs only widens our offering and the introduction of the Agents Commission, which was successfully introduced for the online London Sale last summer, should also broaden the sales appeal.”
