National Stud Undergoes Management Change

The National Stud in Newmarket has undergone a management restructure ahead of the 2022 breeding season, with Tim Lane leaving his role as manager and Anna Kerr assuming the day-to-day running of the stud. Lord 'Teddy' Grimthorpe, who was announced as the new chairman in November, will become executive chairman for the forthcoming season, and former manager Joe Grimwade has returned as head of stud operations.

Outlining the changes on Monday, a statement from the Jockey Club, which owns the National Stud, clarified Grimthorpe's role for the 2022 breeding season as leading the management team and acting in a senior executive capacity for clients and stakeholders. Joe Grimwade, who was also the former manager of The Royal Studs at Sandringham, will in turn “until further notice, support the management of The National Stud and acting as a key point of contact for clients”. The stud's board plans to confirm permanent appointments “at a future date”.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to express our thanks and support to Anna Kerr and Joe Grimwade,” said Lord Grimthorpe. “Anna isĀ an instrumental member of the senior team who has helped The National Stud to navigate well through the challenging pandemic period and contributed to the reputation it has developed over recent years. Joe brings exceptional skills and experience for our clients and his colleagues and we are delighted he has come onboard. I am pleased to accept the invitation to switch from a non-executive to an executive role for this breeding season. Our stallions, boarding, sales and education have all been proving very popular and I'm sure we can build on that progress in the time ahead.”

Tim Lane succeeded Brian O'Rourke as manager of the National Stud in January 2017. Later that year the stud bought Time Test (GB) from Juddmonte. The son of Dubawi (Ire) has risen to become one of the most sought-after young stallions in Britain following some promising results from his first crop of runners in 2021. This season it has welcomed a new recruit to the stallion wing in Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who represents a partnership between Coolmore, Whitsbury Manor Stud, Nick Bradley and the National Stud.

Anna Kerr was appointed as chief operating officer of the National Stud in January 2020. Ten days ago it was announced that Lord Grimthorpe, the former longstanding racing manager to Prince Khalid Abdullah, would take up the same role for Imad Al Sagar's Blue Diamond Stud. He is also deputy senior steward of the Jockey Club and sits on the board of York Racecourse.

Jackson Named National Stud Nominations Manager

Jamie Jackson has been appointed nominations manager for The National Stud.

Jackson gained work experience at Whitsbury Manor Stud and New England Stud before joining the BHA graduate programme, during which he was placed at the National Stud for eight weeks, after which he stayed on. Jackson takes over from Joe Callan, who remains within The Jockey Club has interim general manager of Market Rasen Racecourse.

The National Stud's Stud Director Tim Lane said, “Jamie came to us in July 2019 and showed real potential and determination. He has been a brilliant asset to the team and has grown and progressed exceptionally over the last two years. He has built a good client-base here and has been a huge part of the progress the stud has made”

Jackson added, “It's a really exciting time here at the stud, and I am very lucky to be in the position I'm in. Having seen Time Test and Aclaim foals through the summer and in the sales ring when I first started, to now being successful racehorses, has been amazing. The stallion roster is at its highest standard it has been for quite some time, and Tim and I [and co] hope to further evolve it over the coming years.

“Personally, I am very excited to launch Lope Y Fernandez for the 2022 breeding season. He is a hugely exciting horse to be the only son of Lope De Vega standing in England. Also, I feel very lucky to be working alongside Ed Harper, who helped kick-start my career at Whitsbury Manor Stud.”

Lope Y Fernandez Retired To The National Stud

Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}-Black Dahlia {GB}, by Dansili {GB}), a Group 3-winning 2-year-old who was five times Group 1-placed throughout his career, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at the National Stud in 2022. The Coolmore partners will retain part ownership alongside new owners The National Stud, Whitsbury Manor Stud and Nick Bradley Racing.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, Lope Y Fernandez was bought by MV Magnier for ā‚¬900,000 at Arqana's August Yearling Sale in 2018. A debut winner at The Curragh in June of his 2-year-old campaign, Lope Y Fernandez finished second and third, respectively, behind Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) in the Listed Chesham S. the G2 Vintage S. before returning to The Curragh to take the G3 Round Tower S. Third in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, Lope Y Fernandez would go on to place in the G1 Prix Jean Prat, G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and GI Breeders' Cup Mile at three. He won the Listed Heritage S. this year at four and picked up another top-level placing when second to Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 Queen Anne S.

“Lope Y Fernandez was a lovely, easy moving horse with loads of speed,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien. “He was probably very comfortable with anything from six furlongs to one mile. He's a great mover, has a great walk and a lovely mind.”

Out of the listed-placed Black Dahlia, Lope Y Fernandez is a half-brother to the G2 Vintage S. and G2 Kronimus Oettingen Rennen scorer Dark Vision (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Tim Lane, managing director of The National Stud, said, “Lope Y Fernandez is a hugely exciting addition to our stallion roster at The National Stud. He is an exceptionally good-looking individual and has a standout pedigree. I am a big fan of Lope De Vega and we are delighted to be standing his first son in the UK.”

Lope Y Fernandez's fee will be announced at a later date, and a limited number of breeding rights will be available.

Godolphin Draft Highlights Strong Opening Day Of Tattersalls July Sale

The opening session of the Tattersalls July Sale saw demand across the boards with the ever-popular Godolphin draft the highlight on a day that saw a remarkable clearance rate of 96 percent.

Kalagia provided one of the highlights of the opening day of the Tattersalls July Sale when the half-sister to exciting first-season sire Prince of Lir was knocked down to Tim Lane for 130,000 guineas (US$172,087).

“I was rung up by a top-class British breeder and asked to bid on his behalf,” reported Lane. “I am not sure of plans, but she has an exciting pedigree and obviously Prince Of Lir is flying.”

The daughter of Kodiac was sold by Highclere Stud and is also a half-sister to the Listed winner Nitro Boost from the family of the Group 3 Sprint Stakes winner Resplendent Glory.

Blue Diamond Stud Secure New Jazz for Decorated Knight

New Jazz was the first lot in the ring from the Godolphin draft and made 130,000 guineas (US$172,087) when knocked down to Tony Nerses on behalf of Imad Al Sagar's Blue Diamond Stud.

“We always wanted a Scat Daddy!” smiled Nerses. “She is a lovely individual, we saw her as a yearling but she was beyond our pocket then. Glad to get her back now. She is a winner and has a decent page, we are very happy! We hope to cover her with our own stallion Decorated Knight, she should suit him.”

New Jazz was sold in-foal to champion 3-year-old sprinter Harry Angel on a February cover. The 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy is out of a half-sister to Traffic Guard, runner-up in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.

Roger Varian Strikes for Gentlewoman

There was also spirited competition for the well-bred Gentlewoman from the Godolphin draft. Taking instructions on the phone, Roger Varian made the winning bid at 125,000 guineas (US$165,471) for the daughter of Shamardal to see off underbidder Kevin Buckley.

“She is for someone who could not travel due to the current restrictions, and I have just helped out,” said Varian. “It is likely she will be going abroad. She is from a good family.”

Gentlewoman was also sold in foal to Harry Angel, and is a half-sister to the black-type performers Interlocuter and Spellwork, out of Satin Kiss, an own-sister to Godolphin's Group 1 Middle Park Stakes winner Lujain.

The Tattersalls July Sale continues at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 10.
