‘A Complex Full of the Famous Donny Rockets’ – 450 Yearlings in Premier

The catalogue for the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale, which boasts 450 yearlings set to sell at Doncaster on Aug. 29 and 30, can now be viewed online.

All yearlings sold through the auction will be eligible for the Harry's Half Million, currently known as the Goffs Harry Beeby Premier Yearling S. and re-branded for 2024 in honour of Goffs UK's late Chairman Harry Beeby. Next year's race will still be held at York with a guaranteed prize fund of £500,000.

“The 2023 Premier Sale catalogue remains true to the central pillars of the sale's long enduring philosophy,” Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said. “Buyers already know what they are going to be presented with when they arrive at Doncaster in August–a complex full of precocious, athletic yearlings. To put it another way–a complex full of the famous Donny Rockets.”

Some of the more notable offerings for the sale include a Showcasing (GB) half-sister to the G2 winner Without A Fight (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) out of the G3 winner Khor Sheed (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), selling as lot 5; a Siyouni colt out of the G1-placed mare Lady Darshaan (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and a half-brother to the Listed winners Beholding (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Let's Go (Street Cry {Ire}) catalogued as lot 11; a Wootton Bassett (GB) half-brother to the G2 winner Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never) (lot 48); and a Kingman (GB) filly (lot 123) out of the G3 winner mare Queen of Bermuda (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). Other standouts include lot 234, a Sea The Stars (Ire) colt out of a Frankel (GB) half-sister to the G2 winners Spirit Quartz (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Caspian Prince (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) and Tuscan Gaze (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}); and lot 433, a No Nay Never colt out of an Invincible Spirit (Ire) half-sister to the G1 winner Lillie Langtry (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), the dam of G1 winners Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

“We continue to invest in this sale and its bright future and earlier this year we announced that we are rebranding the sale's long enduring race at York and significantly increasing the guaranteed prize fund,” Kent continued. “For next year's race, for which all yearlings sold this year are eligible to enter, all runners will be racing for their share of £500,000 in the re-branded Harry's Half Million by Goffs.

“When the race was launched over 20 years ago it was Europe's richest 2-year-old race and since then it has been won by some outstanding horses; Acclamation, Dark Angel, Tasleet and Wootton Bassett to name but a few, and increasing the prize fund to £500,000 demonstrates our commitment to the race and the Premier Sale.”

New Select NH Foal Sale to Be Held by Goffs UK in November

A select NH Foal Sale at Doncaster on Nov. 4 and 5 was announced by Goffs UK on Friday. The precise format of the sale will be announced over the coming weeks after further discussions with the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association and leading NH breeders.

This new sale will also complement the existing NH Foal section of the January Sale.

“The recent renewal of the NH Foal sales presented many challenges for breeders, and we can't keep offering the same sales and expect a different result,” Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said. “It is an extremely exciting time for NH Breeders in the UK now, with more young stallions than ever before including Group 1 winners, Classic winners and the one-two from the Epsom Derby all available to British NH mare owners.”

Grade 1-Winning Owner Bartlett Lands Top Lot at Aintree Sale

On a day when Ronnie Bartlett's Banbridge landed a Grade 1 over fences, the leading owner snapped up the £260,000 Nativehill (Ire) at the Goffs UK Aintree Sale after racing.

Nativehill, a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Bellshill, was knocked down to Ian Ferguson on behalf of Bartlett for £260,000.

The Flemensfirth gelding, who was a late addition to the catalogue, bolted up in a point-to-point at Loughanmore on Easter Saturday for Colin McKeever.

A total of 19 horses sold for six-figure sums and others to feature were D B Cooper (Lot 17), a 4-year-old who won his debut point for Sean Doyle of Monbeg Stables and sold to Joey Logan and Andy and Gemma Brown for £225,000.

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent commented, “Today has been another historic day for Goffs' point-to-point sales. It started with Goffs PTP graduate Constitution Hill winning the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle shortly after Ahoy Senor finished second in the Grade 1 Aintree Bowl, and all this before Dysart Enos won the Grade 2 Goffs UK Nickel Coin Mares' Bumper just 12 months after selling for £95,000 at this sale last year.

“The day finished with another successful Aintree Sale which saw a total of 19 horses sell for six-figure sums, five more than we achieved in what was a record sale last year. This was matched by an 89% clearance rate and a median that was 15% ahead of last year which clearly demonstrates the consistent level of trade from start to finish. The genuine nature of today's market is another highlight of tonight's sale and, as ever, we would like to extend our thanks to the Aintree Executive for their support of the sale. We must also thank our vendors who have once again supported us with their very best horses and we wish all buyers the very best of luck with their new purchases.”
