Goffs Yorton Sale Suspended For One Year Until 2025

The Goffs Yorton Sale will not take place in 2024, and will instead return on Sept. 4, 2025, Goffs and Yorton's David Futter confirmed on Wednesday.

The decision was made by Futter, who felt that although the quality of horses at Yorton was up to its usual high standard, the quantity did not justify the sale taking place this year. Yorton's aim is to assemble roughly 50 quality lots in time for the 2025 edition.

Futter said, “It has not been an easy decision to suspend the sale for 2024 but we feel it is in the best interests of the event given we don't have the numbers of horses required to ask potential buyers to make their way to Wales. We are grateful to Goffs for bringing their professionalism and sharing in our enthusiasm for this venture and together we have worked hard to establish a sale with a reputation for quality and performance. We still strongly believe in starting horses earlier and in producing 2-year-olds and will keep offering Yorton graduates, just in a different location in 2024. We will maintain our focus on sourcing a quality line-up of horses and look forward to working with Goffs and welcoming everyone back to Yorton in 2025.”

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent added, “With its first Grade 1 winner coming in 2023 courtesy of Inthepocket (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}), many outstanding pinhooking results for store and point-to-point buyers, and a new record top price set last year with a No Risk At All (Fr) 2-year-old selling for £165,000, the sale is performing in all sectors and it's a credit to David and the Yorton team. We too look forward to seeing the sale return to the calendar in 2025 and working with Yorton to produce another successful sale.”

Coral Gold Cup Sale At Newbury Launched By Goffs

The first Coral Gold Cup Sale, featuring select point-to-pointers at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday, Dec. 2, was launched by Goffs on Thursday.

Held after racing on Coral Gold Cup Day in the Newbury winner's enclosure, the sale is the latest offering by the sales company that also conducts point-to-point sales at Aintree, Punchestown, Sandown and Yorton among other locales. In the past, Newbury also featured on that list, and a sale there set a world-record price for a National Hunt horse-in-training at public auction when Un Temps Pour Tout (Ire) (Robin Des Champs {Fr}) sold for £450,000 in 2013, prior to the course's redevelopment.

Goffs, UK Managing Director Tim Kent said, “We are excited by the opportunities Newbury will offer as the racecourse has undergone extensive redevelopment since our last sale there just under 10 years ago and it now offers facilities that are second to none. Combined with the world-class Coral Gold Cup meeting, which is always attended by so many leading owners and trainers, it is ideally suited to have a sale of this nature, so we will use our extensive knowledge and experience, learned from years of offsite sales, to make this a success.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the Newbury Racecourse executive for their enthusiastic backing of this event, we look forward to working with them in the coming weeks and, of course, to offering a world-class catalogue of pointers on Saturday, 2 December.”

The two-day Coral Gold Cup meeting features the Listed Mares' Novices' Hurdle, the G2 John Francome Novices' Chase and the Coral Gold Cup.

Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby added, “No matter the industry or profession, competition is vital for a healthy market. Goffs thrives on offering vibrant competition to the market and it is in that spirit that we head to Newbury to launch The Coral Gold Cup Sale.

“Goffs have conducted off-site boutique sales all over the world with huge success; think London, Dubai, Hong Kong, as well as our PTP sales, our record speaks for itself and we will bring the same dynamic, customer focussed approach to Newbury which will benefit from our experienced and respected teams in the UK and Ireland.”

New Record Top Price Set For No Risk At All Gelding At Goffs UK Yorton Sale

The fifth edition of the Goffs UK Yorton Sale featured a new record top price, with 2-year-old Brisky Dancer (Fr) selling to Ian Ferguson and Dai Walters for £165,000 on Thursday. The sale celebrated it's first Grade 1 alumi this year with Inthepocket (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}), who scored at Aintree's Grand National Festival.

Consigned as lot 5, the gelded son of No Risk At All (Fr) is a half-brother to Grade 3 winners Al Dancer (Fr) (Al Namix {Fr}) and Tzar's Dancer (Fr) (Tzar Rodney {Fr}). The previous record price was also set by a No Risk At All 2-year-old at £105,000, also purchased by Walters, in the sale's inaugural edition five years ago.

No Risk At All also sired the second highest price on the day, a 2-year-old filly (lot 18), who is a half-sister to listed winner Night Endeavour (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}), with the pair being out of the listed winner Night Serenade (Ire) (Golan {Ire}).

A total of 36 horses sold, the same number as last year, for a clearance rate of 80% and a gross of £1,136,000. The average dropped a tick to £31,556, and the median decreased 7% to £28,000.

Yorton owner David Futter said, “This year marks the fifth year of this sale and it's great to see so many returning clients, along with a number of new faces. We take great pleasure in hosting this sale and we can't do it without the support of those who have attended and taken part in the auction–so to them we say a sincere thank you. We would also like to thank the Goffs team who have partnered with us since the launch of this sale in 2019.”

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent added, “We are delighted to break another record here at Yorton Farm and we are very proud to partner with David Futter and his team for this wonderfully unique event, where there were some lovely horses on offer today. We look forward to seeing them appear on the racecourse or in the sales ring for new connections and we hope to see another Grade 1 winner from this sale in the coming season.”

The Newboulds are selling 13 head, including dual Grade 2 winner Third Time Lucki (Ire) (Arcadia {Ger}) (lot 85) and three-time winner West Cork (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}) (lot 84), who finished second in the G2 Scottish Champion Hurdle. “The August Sale follows on from our largest UK NH sale of the year, the Spring Sale, and hosts our second of four UK store sessions in 2023, the final two being the 2-year-old store sessions in the September and Yorton Sales,” Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent said. “We would like to extend our thanks to Mike and Eileen Newbould who will host a partial dispersal of their racing interests which is headed by the dual Grade 2 winner Third Time Lucki. Along with the Gigginstown House Stud partial dispersal, an annual draft at Doncaster HIT Sales which has produced many highlights over the years, there are plenty of lots to capture the attention of buyers.”
