Thoroughbred Idea Foundation Forms Wagering And Integrity Issues Steering Committee

The Thoroughbred Idea Foundation (TIF) announced Tuesday the formation of the Wagering and Integrity Issues Steering Committee, which will include members from its current directors and beyond. This panel will guide TIF's approach to advocating for change within North American racing's wagering operations and topics related to improving integrity on behalf of all racing participants, but specifically horseplayers.

The members of the Wagering and Integrity Issues Steering Committee are:

Michael Beychok
Amy Brantley
Marshall Gramm (TIF Board)
Candice Hare
Jonathon Kinchen
Mike Maloney
Paul Matties (TIF Board)
Tom Reynolds (TIF Board)
Nick Tammaro
Maury Wolff

“Issues related to wagering and integrity impact all stakeholders in racing and there has been little evolution on this front in the face of major industry consolidation over the last two decades. We have assembled a tremendous group to help advance our work and I am thankful that they see the value in our vision, the past two years of advocacy, and want to help us spur action on these matters across the industry,” said Patrick Cummings, TIF Executive Director.

TIF also announced the addition of Michael Levy to its Board of Directors. Levy is the founder and president of Muirfield Insurance, a full-service equine insurance agency based in Lexington, Kentucky. Along with wife Meg, they own and operate Bluewater Farm and Bluewater Sales.

Throughout his career, Levy has served on a variety of industry boards, including the American Graded Stakes Committee, Breeders' Cup and Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.

“Mike brings a lifetime of experience to our board, and with it, a willingness to think outside-the-box. He is keenly aware of the challenges of racing's business model as an owner-breeder and is also an avid horseplayer. We are fortunate to have his support,” said TIF founder and board chairman Craig Bernick.

Thoroughbred Idea Foundation: Charity Summer Prop Contest Begins On Blue Grass Stakes Day

The summer is upon us, and the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation's Summer Prop Contest benefiting backstretch support organizations is now open and running for the next eight Saturdays. But on this #FreeDataFriday, we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight more success in the campaign to provide customers with actual free data!

Coming in the form of free programs, complete with past performances, and following the lead of Churchill Downs in their recently completed spring/summer meet where they offered free past performances, Keeneland is doing the same for their one-off summer meet. The Lexington track, which opened its short stand on Wednesday, is publishing a file which contains its full program and another with just the past performances.

To access Keeneland's programs, CLICK HERE.

The 2020 TIF Summer Prop Contest commences this week with Keeneland's Toyota Blue Grass Stakes Day taking top billing. Rick Hammerle, winner of the 2019 contest has set the 12 props for this week's contest.

A player's top four scores will count towards the overall standings, so it is OK if you miss a week but increases the likelihood of a better score the more you play. The 2019 contest was decided by just one point in the final week.

The top three finishers each week will get to choose amongst three backstretch development charities which will receive donations. The overall top three finishers in the contest will do the same, and enjoy bragging rights. This summer's beneficiaries include the Backside Learning Center at Churchill Downs, the Belmont Child Care Association and the Edwin J Gregson Foundation, based in southern California. Click on each of their names to learn more about them.

Equibase ‘Investigating’ Incident In Which Horse Reported Scratched Won At Thistledown

Tuesday's first race at Thistledown in North Randall, Ohio, was won by a horse named Chargedwith Intent. Part of a two-horse entry in the race, Chargedwith Intent had been reported scratched prior to the running of the race on Equibase, while his stablemate Swift Punch had been reported as running. Both horses are trained by Robert Gorham.

Instead, Swift Punch did not appear in the starting gate, and Chargedwith Intent went on to win the race. The race was off at 12:55 p.m. Eastern, and Equibase did not correct the error until after the race had been run, at 1:06 p.m.

“Equibase is aware of the matter involving the first race at [Thistledown] racetrack today,” Equibase said in a statement on social media. “We have been in contact with our limited partner, [Thistledown racetrack], and are currently investigating the matter.”

On the official chart, Swift Punch is listed a scratch by his trainer.

Pat Cummings, executive director of the Thoroughbred Idea Foundation, posted on Twitter a letter he sent to the Ohio Racing Commission requesting an investigation of the error.

“At best, this is a mistake, perhaps by the track, or recipients of information from the track or its vendors,” Cummings wrote. “At worst, something potentially nefarious occurred. It is impossible for customers who wagered more than $128,000 on bets within and connected to this race to know for certain what occurred, but they have been aggrieved by this incident.”

The Thoroughbred Idea Foundation will once again facilitate the TIF Belmont Stakes Day Prop Contest to benefit a racing-related charity. A $1,000 contribution in the name of the winner will be made to the Belmont Child Care Association (Anna House). The BCCA's mission is “to provide a safe, supportive and academically inspiring environment for the children of parents working in the Thoroughbred racing backstretch area at New York's historic Belmont Park, Aqueduct Racetrack and Saratoga Race Course.” Anna House reopens on Monday, June 22 after being closed since March to help limit the spread of COVID-19.
