Fasig-Tipton’s David Kyle Named Finalist for Dedication to Breeding Award

Congratulations to David Kyle, one of three finalists in the Dedication to Breeding Award category of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), presented by Godolphin. Kyle was just out of high school when he moved to Lexington and began working for Fasig-Tipton in 1987. Now the plant manager at the Newtown Pike location, Kyle has 33 years under his belt overseeing the facility, preparing the grounds for the sales, and helping to make the sales process run smoothly for both consigners and horses.

“No day is too long, no task is too large or small,” said Andrea Greathouse of Paramount Sales, “and he approaches his job with a smile and kindness.”

Other finalists for the Dedication to Breeding Award are Steve Avery of Taylor Made Farm and Helen Otero of Coolmore America, who will be recognized on these pages tomorrow. The Dedication to Breeding Award is presented annually to an individual who has been in the Thoroughbred breeding industry for at least 10 years and is a pivotal part of his or her employer’s success.

A total of seven award categories will be honored by TIEA for 2020. Maria Cristina Silva of New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association (NYTHA) has already been announced as the winner of the Community Award, while the winners in the other categories will be announced live in a virtual ceremony hosted by Jill Bryne and streamed at the TDN homepage Thursday, Nov. 5, at 12:00 p.m. ET. All finalists will be spotlighted in TDN in the days leading up to the ceremony.

Taylor Made’s Steve Avery Named Finalist for Dedication to Breeding Award

Congratulations to Steve Avery, one of three finalists in the Dedication to Breeding Award category of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), presented by Godolphin. The Wisconsin native has been in the horse industry for over four decades and has been part of Taylor Made for the last 20 years. Among the champions he’s raised or managed are Havre de Grace, Princess Rooney, Songbird, and Speightstown.

“His responsibility, his reliability, his work ethic: it’s just phenomenal,” said Taylor Made’s Logan Payne. “Even on vacation, he walks his dog, Henry, up to the barns to check on things.”

Added Dr. Kevin Hyde of Rood & Riddle: “His impact on the industry can be seen through all those he has helped start their careers.”

Matt Lyons of Candy Meadows Named Finalist for Leadership Award in Breeding

Congratulations to Matt Lyons, a finalist in the Leadership Award in Breeding category of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), presented by Godolphin. A native of East Galway, Ireland, Lyons graduated from the Equine Science and Business program at the University of Limerick. He began his stateside employment with the late Gerry Dilger at his Dromoland Farm over two decades ago. After stints at Taylor Made Farm, ClassicStar Farm, and Woodford Thoroughbreds, Lyons has been a part of Candy Meadows, an arm of Everett Dobson’s Cheyenne Stables, as its senior vice president and chief operating officer since 2018.

Among the words describing Lyons on his TIEA nomination were, “Coach. Teacher. Honest. Trustworthy. Respected.”

Other finalists for the Leadership Award in Breeding are Wayne Clem of Claiborne Farm and Christy Holden of Country Life Farm, who were recognized on these pages in the past two days. The Leadership Award in Breeding is presented annually to an individual who displays exceptional leadership qualities while in a managerial or supervisory position on a Thoroughbred farm.

Country Life’s Christy Holden Named Finalist for Leadership Award in Breeding

Congratulations to Christy Holden, a finalist in the Leadership Award in Breeding category of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), presented by Godolphin. Holden has been the general manager of Maryland’s Country Life Farm, including its Merryland division, since 2015 after first working at Country Life 30 years prior as a teenager. She eventually returned to Country Life in 2004, beginning in the office and working her way up to broodmare manager and finally general manager. Holden, who has also served on the board of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) since 2018, works closely with Country Life owners and brothers Josh and Mike Pons and calls them her mentors.
