TIEA Award Nominations Open

Nominations for the 2022 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA) are open now through Friday, July 15. The TIEAs were held in America for the first time in 2016. Godolphin, the global racing stable founded by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is the principal sponsor of the awards in association with The Jockey Club, the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protection Association (NHBPA), the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and the Breeders' Cup. Godolphin also sponsors the equivalent Stud and Stable Staff Awards in Ireland, Australia, Great Britain and France.

Cash prizes totaling $122,000 will be awarded to winners as well as runners-up in a total of seven categories: Dr. J. David “Doc” Richardson Community Award, Katherine McKee Administration Award, Dedication to Breeding Award, Dedication to Racing Award, Newcomer Award, Support Services and Leadership Award. The Newcomer Award also includes an educational trip to Dubai.

The TIEAs' new category sponsors, which lent their support last year, will be returning as sponsors again for 2022. They are Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Hallway Feeds, NYRA, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, NTRA, along with I Am Horse Racing. Keeneland will once again host the awards ceremony, which will be held Friday, Oct. 14 in the sales pavilion.

Kelsey Marshall Hughes Elected To Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Board Of Directors

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is pleased to announce the election of Kelsey Marshall Hughes to the organization's Board of Directors. The TRF board provides leadership for carrying out the Foundation's mission to provide sanctuary for retired racehorses no longer able to compete on the racetrack and to save them from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter.

“I have had the pleasure of knowing Kelsey for a number of years and am thrilled that she has agreed to serve on our Board,” said Patrick Mackay, President and Chairman of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. “She is totally committed to Thoroughbred Aftercare and the TRF is extremely lucky to have someone of her caliber furthering our mission.”

Kelsey Marshall Hughes is the Vice President of Partner Relations for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and lives in New York. She was honored with the Katherine McKee Administration Award sponsored by Keeneland as part of the 2021 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards.

“I am honored to join the board of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation which holds the same values and commitment to aftercare that I feel so strongly about,” said Hughes. “Taking care of our equine athletes after their racing career is over is of the utmost importance and I am happy to give back to the industry that has given so much to me.”

About TRF: Founded in 1983, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is a national organization devoted to saving Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete at the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse, and slaughter. As the oldest Thoroughbred rescue in the country, the TRF provides lifelong sanctuary to retired Thoroughbreds throughout their lifetime.

Best known for its pioneering TRF Second Chances program, the organization provides incarcerated individuals with life-changing vocational training through its accredited equine care and stable management program. At eight correctional facilities across the US, including one juvenile justice facility, this program offers second careers to its horses and a second chance at life for program graduates upon release from prison. The TRF Second Chances Program at the Wallkill Correctional Facility provides a home for 40 retired Thoroughbred racehorses and has been changing the lives of returning citizens for nearly forty years.

TIEA Award To Honor Richardson

In conjunction with the sixth annual Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards presented by Godolphin, this year's Community Award has been renamed the Dr. J. David “Doc” Richardson Community Award presented by Churchill Downs.

The announcement was made following the sixth race Saturday at Churchill Downs as the track hosted a Celebration of Life for Richardson, the distinguished Louisville surgeon who was an owner, breeder and widely respected leader in the horse racing industry. He died Sept. 7 in Saratoga Springs, NY, from complications due to a breakthrough COVID infection at the age of 76.

The Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards, which will take place Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. in the Keeneland Entertainment Center, recognize and reward the outstanding talent, diligence and commitment of the farm and racing stable staff who are at the heart of the sport.

Dr. Richardson chaired the Community Award committee and helped select this year's winner and runner-up by the first panel which met in August: Nicholas Caras of the New York Racetrack Chaplaincy and Diana Pinones of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, respectively. The winner will receive $7,500 and $2,500 to their charity of choice. The runner-up will be awarded with $2,500.

Ideal candidates for the Dr. J. David “Doc” Richardson Community Award should work either for or with a charitable organization, or as part of the charitable arm of the Thoroughbred business for which they work. Nominees for this award do not need to be directly employed in the Thoroughbred industry.

Qualities for nominees include

Commitment, dedication and enthusiasm

Propensity to work hard

Evidence of a desire to improve and progress skills and knowledge

Team spirit approach in the workplace

Willingness to learn with examples of involvement in industry events and activities

Eligible candidates include, but are not limited to, those employed in Thoroughbred aftercare; backstretch programs; education related initiatives; racetrack or farm chaplaincy; etc.

TIEA Award Winners Announced

The winner of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards were announced via a virtual ceremony Thursday, hosted by Studio 46 Media in Lexington, Kentucky. Jill Byrne, Vice President of Racing Operations at Colonial Downs, was once again the master of ceremonies. The Awards are sponsored by Godolphin in partnership with the National HBPA, TOBA, The Jockey Club, and Breeders’ Cup. Media partners are the TDN, BloodHorse Publications, Daily Racing Form, The Paulick Report, Fox Sports and TVG.

Jimmy Bell, President of Godolphin in America commented, “The Covid-19 pandemic has affected everyone’s lives in so many ways. But in our industry, we are all very fortunate to have an enormous group of talented and dedicated frontline workers who have continued their hard work, often requiring endless hours, to provide the care for our equine athletes. The Thoroughbred business could not function without them and we truly appreciate what they do.”
