Second Stride Joins Horse Country Tours

Horse Country, who connects guests to tours that provide a behind-the-scenes look into Kentucky's equine industry, is forming a new partnership with leading national equine adoption program Second Stride, the organization said in a release late Friday afternoon.

Tours of Second Stride will be offered six days a week, starting July 10, with both public and private options available. Guests will learn about the retraining and re-homing process and meet current trainees, as well as interact with the Thoroughbred ambassadors that reside at the farm.

“We're thrilled to have Second Stride join Horse Country and begin offering tours this month,” said Hallie Hardy, Executive Director of Horse Country. “Our member farms and supporting businesses, like Second Stride, are dedicated to connecting people to the horse, land and people of Kentucky's Horse Country.”

“Second Stride is excited to partner with Horse Country to expand our educational reach to the community and beyond” said Kim Smith, Founder and Executive Director of Second Stride. “The Chorleywood location is dedicated to partnership involvement and outreach as well as transitioning the state icon, the Thoroughbred, safely into fresh starts.”

Thoroughbreds To Be Recognised In Olympics

Thoroughbreds will now be recognised in the starting lists and results beginning with the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, in an agreement announced on Tuesday.

Previously, retired Thoroughbred racehorses were listed as 'breeding unknown'. The agreement–which applies to dressage, show jumping, and eventing–follows discussions between the European and Mediterranean Horseracing Federation (EMHF), the World Breeding Federation for Sports Horses (WBFSH), the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) and the International Stud Book Committee (ISBC) and will extend also to all FEI competitions. Historically, under a Memorandum of Understanding between the FEI and the WBFSH, only member stud books of the WBFSH have been credited, as that organisation's members specifically breed horses for the Olympic disciplines.

Dr. Paull Khan, Secretary-General of the EMHF and a member of the Steering Group of the International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses (IFAR), said, “Much effort is made around the world to encourage the owners of retired racehorses to explore second careers for them. This recognition will both further the message that Thoroughbreds do go on to compete with distinction in other equestrian disciples and prompt more Thoroughbred owners to consider this retirement option for their racehorses.”

Auctav Breeding Stock Sales Announced

Breeding stock sales, for several breeds, will be held on Nov. 23 and Dec. 1, respectively, Auctav announced. The November Sale is dedicated exclusively to Purebred Arabians, while the Dec. 1 sale is open to Flat horses, National Hunt horses (Thoroughbred and AQPS) and trotters.

Arnaud Angeliaume, Auctav General Director, said, “I am delighted with the creation of these two sales. The Auctav Arabian Autumn Sale shows the ability we have had to set up dynamism in the Purebred Arabian market and more particularly in this breeding aspect.

“As for this new breeding sale, it is the consequence of the success of past sales. The conditions of the sales but also of the results of these sales have prompted sellers to ask us for the same format. What's made its special features is to have a single date for all racing codes because for everyone, it is a pivotal period in the breeding calendar, either for trotters or thoroughbreds and NH horses.”
