New York To Begin Testing For Bisphosphonates Oct. 26; Penalties Include $25,000 Fine, Loss Of License

An advisory from the office of the New York State Gaming Commission's Equine Medical Director was disseminated on Monday:

As of Oct. 26, 2021, the New York Drug Testing and Research Program will commence testing of biologic samples for the presence of bisphosphonates. Absent written Commission approval of a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption, detection of bisphosphonate compounds in biologic samples obtained from 2-year-old and 3-year-old Thoroughbred racehorses will be considered by the Commission to be evidence of a violation of 9 NYCRR 4043.12(c) for which a fine of $25,000 and loss of occupational license may be imposed.

Horses testing positive for bisphosphonates will not be permitted to race until such time as they are re-tested and found to be clear of bisphosphonate compounds.

Background

On March 28, 2019, the Office of the Equine Medical Director issued two advisories regarding the use of bisphosphonates. The first advisory recommended that no bisphosphonate be administered to a racehorse that is less than four years old.

The second advisory warned that Thoroughbred horse owners, trainers, and/or veterinarians had a responsibility to guard against an impermissible administration of a bisphosphonate to a racehorse under potential penalty.

On Track For Record Year, Paco Lopez To Resume Riding Saturday At Meadowlands

A pair of Chad Brown-trained fillies, both coming off Maiden Special Weight victories on the grass, head a field of 14 for Saturday's featured $45,000 allowance when racing resumes during the all-turf Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet.

Saturday's six-race card will also mark the return of leading rider Paco Lopez, who has been sidelined since injuring his left shoulder in a spill on Oct. 15 at the Meadowlands.

With 281 victories on the year, Lopez is two shy of his career best set in 2019.

A 4-year-old daughter of Invincible Spirit, Infinite Potential will look to become a two-time winner at the Monmouth-at-Meadowlands meet after breaking her maiden on Oct. 1 with a neck victory at a mile and a sixteenth on the grass.

Bred in Ireland, Infinite Potential is owned by Klaravich Stables.

Brown has also entered Bleecker Street, a 3-year-old filly who won at first asking on Aug. 21 at Monmouth Park at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf. The daughter of Quality Road, owned by Peter M. Brant, has not raced since then.

Two also-eligibles are among the 14 horses entered in the feature race. Overall, 70 horses are entered for the six races.

Saturday's program is the sixth of the seven-day boutique meet, with the final live Thoroughbred card of the year in New Jersey scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30.

First race post time is 7 p.m.

Study Shows Owners Of OTTBs Discount Breed Stereotypes

A new study has shown that owners of retired Thoroughbred racehorses feel that many stereotypes of the breed are ultimately untrue.

Dr. Lillian Hellmann and colleagues from the University of Sydney, Auburn University, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences created a study to try to better understand why those outside the racing industry often hold preconceived notions that many Thoroughbreds are dangerous or behave erratically. The team was interested in determining if these stereotypes affect the transition of retired racehorses into new homes and second careers.

[Story Continues Below]

The researchers hoped the information gleaned from the study would help develop and modify programs that transition horses into careers after racing. The researchers surveyed 313 horse owners, requesting information about breed, sex, birth year and discipline, as well as owner-perceived information about their horse's behavior.

The results included four main disciplines: eventing, dressage, show jumping, and pleasure riding. Owners of retired racehorses generally felt that their horses are more social than other sporthorse breeds. They also believed their horses possess greater self control, but that their horses also appeared to be more dominant and aggressive. Overall, they felt their horses behaved better than other breeds. The researchers conclude the belief that Thoroughbreds are not well-suited for specific disciplines because of their temperament is not supported.
