Kirkpatrick & Co Presents In Their Care: Horses Are The Best Medicine For Agrinsoni

Few questions are needed to prompt Frank Agrinsoni into telling his life story in well under an hour.

Yes, he talks fast. And he is unflinching as he speaks of mistakes made as a two-time divorcee, an itinerant career typical of many racetrackers, a grim battle with cancer that is now in its fourth year and the passion that sustains him, his love of Thoroughbreds.

“Nobody gave us a manual when we signed up for life,” Agrinsoni, 54, began.

And he was off to the races during a phone interview that largely turned into a delightful monologue by a good man.

Although Agrinsoni lacked a manual, his father Jose's background as a jockey turned exercise rider turned trainer certainly shaped his life. Jose left Puerto Rico to come to New York, where he worked a night shift at Nabisco, then trained horses at Aqueduct  Racetrack or Belmont Park each morning. His son accompanied him to the barn whenever possible.

“I fell in love with the horse as soon as I saw one,” Agrinsoni said.

He served as a hotwalker at a tender age. With his father as his role model, he developed a tremendous work ethic. He just never viewed it that way.

“It's not work. It's a lifestyle,” he said. “If you can't handle seven days a week, the 16-hour days you sometimes put in, then this is not for you.”

Agrinsoni tried to devote the hours necessary to being a good college student. He attended William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J., only to realize after a year and a half that advanced studies were not for him.

“The horses were calling,” he said.

He happily answered that call. He has worked as a hotwalker, groom, foreman and assistant for so many trainers that he lost count of them all.

“I'm a utility man,” he said. “Wherever I'm needed in the barn, that's where I go.”

He has been employed by luminaries such as Dick Dutrow Sr., Carl Nafzger and Steve Asmussen, making sure to absorb knowledge from anyone he ever reported to.

“This is not a factory where you train as a forklift driver and you train for six weeks and you're done,” he said. “This is an ever-evolving business. I've been 40 years in this game. I'm proud to say that. I'm still learning. Certain horses have to be handled a certain way.”

According to Agrinsoni, his greatest lessons derived from overseeing modest horses at small tracks.

“I grew up with horses that used to run for $3,000, for a ham sandwich,” he said. “I know what it is to take care of a horse that, after a race, he can't stand and eat from a feed tub. You actually had to put the feed tub on the ground because he was so sore.

“Being at a lot of cheap tracks, you get horses that nobody wants from the big tracks. I'm good with the problem children. It's like I tell everybody, 'I can treat the physical. It's the stuff between the ears we've got to work on.'“

Pearl Hagadorn, an assistant to trainer Cherie DeVaux, hired Agrinsoni two years ago to help her with a string of horses at Trackside Training Center in Louisville. He was grateful to gain a place in the operation because he believes DeVaux, a former assistant to Eclipse Award-winning Chad Brown, is on her way to becoming an outstanding trainer. He enjoys a great rapport with Hagadorn, who readily admits she often assigns him the barn's “problem children.”

“He would never complain about it,” she said. “He gets along with all horses.”

Hagadorn treasures employees such as Agrinsoni because he is devoted to the horses entrusted to them.

“It's just a totally different type of human being than the ones just there for the paycheck,” she said. “They have empathy. They understand the body language. They know how to interact and read their facial expressions, which you cannot say about a lot of people in the business anymore.”

Agrinsoni is as gregarious as he is loquacious. He speaks English and Spanish fluently. He moves around the track with the ease of a politician working a crowd.

“Anywhere you go with Frank, everybody knows him,” Hagadorn said. “It doesn't matter what state you're in or what track. There are at least three or four people who will say hello to him.”

She noted that Agrinsoni often gives of his time to help other workers with needs away from the track.

Said Ken Snyder, a long-time friend: “He's one of the nice, good people on the backside. I've never heard a bad word spoken about him.”

Agrinsoni spoke lovingly of his three children: Francisco, 15; Shandra, 14; and Asia, 10. He lives with his parents in Louisville. Jose is 80. Olga, his mother, is 78.

“I have no money,” he said. “So my reputation is everything.”

So is health. He finally hopes to regain that once he undergoes a prostate operation to remove malignant cells. The procedure has been on hold since last January due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His battle with cancer began when a colonoscopy revealed a tumor in 2017.

“It's been hell,” he said. “In and out of hospitals. In and out of chemotherapy.”

Agrinsoni said doctors are confident they can eradicate the few cancer cells that remain. He looks forward to returning to the backside and the track in the spring, if not sooner. He views that atmosphere as critical to his recovery.

“When the trumpet blares for the call to post, I'm like an old gelding that feels it's time for business,” he said. “There is no drug that I could ever take that beats a horse coming down the lane in front and you had something to do with it. From that quarter pole down, I still get goosebumps. The hair on the back of my neck still stands up.”

Words spoken by a man who has much to live for – and much to give.

Churchill Downs Releases 2021 Official Art of The Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs released on Monday the 2021 “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby” by Breathitt County, Ky. artist Ralph Fugate.

Fugate's style of “impressionistic realism” utilizes bold, vibrant colors to capture the sheer beauty and power of the horse, the colorful silks, the enthusiasm of the crowd and the excitement of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve and the Longines Kentucky Oaks.

2021 represents the fifth year in a row that Churchill Downs has tapped a talented Kentucky artist to capture the excitement of the Kentucky Derby and Oaks. Ralph Fugate is a self-taught professional sports artist specializing in Thoroughbred horse racing. As a child growing up in Eastern Kentucky, Fugate always loved to draw, but it wasn't until age 25 that he picked up a paintbrush for the first time. Having nurtured an interest in horses and horse racing throughout his life, the artist soon turned his creative passion into painting them.

Fugate's “Official Art of the Kentucky Derby” will be featured on the 2021 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks official racing programs and a variety of merchandise, including Derby and Oaks 147 limited edition artist-signed and numbered posters with embossed and metallic ink treatments. Godolphin Flying Start Applications Accepted From Dec. 1

Applications for the 2021-2023 in take of trainees for the hugely popular Godolphin Flying Start (GFS) program will be accepted beginning Dec. 1, 2020 and will remain open through Feb. 8, 2021. The online portal has been opened a month earlier than normal to provide applicants additional time in a process that has been more streamlined than ever.

GFS is a two-year international management and leadership program for the Thoroughbred industry and provides its trainees with practical, hands-on work and study experiences in five different countries.

“It is fantastic that we have been able to deliver the first- and second-year course during these unprecedented times,” said Clodagh Kavanagh, executive director of GFS. “Trainees have had many of the same experiences as previous year groups as well as enhanced virtual learning and technology. By August 2021, when the new intake of Godolphin Flying Start trainees are due to commence the course, we will be able to deliver the best of our traditional and of our newly developed training and networking capabilities. We look forward to receiving their applications over the coming months.”

2020 At Del Mar: Team Steps Up To Face Huge Challenges

So just up ahead – after this Sunday in fact – Del Mar will wipe its sanitized hands clean of racing in 2020. In a way, the word that fits best for that is “Amen.” But in another way, what an amazingly amazing year it has been.

Like the rest of the country and most of the rest of the world, the COVID-19 thing has turned things anywhere from sideways to upside down in California horse racing. But despite shutdowns, lockdowns, purple tiers and “no you can'ts” raining down, the state – for the most part – kept on racing. And it's a darn good thing it did.

There's a simple economic formula at work in that regard: California has more than 5,000 Thoroughbred racehorses in its midst – big, strong, fast athletes that are pleasing to the eye — and totally needy. They need to be exercised, groomed, bathed, fed and pampered every day if they are to live and stay healthy. Those things can only happen to them and for them if there is racing.

If racing takes place and wagering follows, portions of the betting build purses. When owners win purse monies, they in turn can pay their trainers, who next are able to pay their grooms/exercise riders/hot walkers, all of whom do the day-in-day-out things necessary to care for their horses.

Initially, the virus threatened that whole chain of well-being. But racing being an outdoor sport, racing officials rising to the occasion, those directly involved with the horses willing to do whatever it took to continue on, the public responding positively to live athletic events – all of those circumstances allowed for the sport to carry on.

But it wasn't easy.

In Southern California, Santa Anita in Los Angeles County went to the mat first with the virus and all its ripples and – after taking some body blows – fought back and found a way. Then it came Del Mar's turn.

Del Mar was up to the challenge by calling on its most valuable resource – the team that calls Del Mar their workplace and their home-away-from-home. Dozens and dozens of them stepped up, putting egos in their back pocket and replacing them with “let's get it done” attitudes.

First up, there had to be a plan. Two of the track's stars – senior VP for operations and administration Ann Hall and director of risk management Kim Jacobson – took that one on. Two months worth of figuring, asking, calculating, phoning, cajoling, writing, rewriting, late nights and lots of sweat later the plan was down – 10 pages worth, single spaced.

Officially called the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club COVID-19 Operational Plan, the document covered it all – from the moment the first horse set foot on the grounds to the time when the last horse trailer went out the gate. It spoke directly to what every person and animal was to be about; every when, where, why and how. Backstretch, frontside, racetrack, paddock, jockeys' room, starting gate, quarantines, cleanings, food, health screenings, masks, wrist bands – and more. Just about every activity that could or would happen at the racetrack was scrutinized and presented. A guiding light in the report was the insightful aid provided by Del Mar's partners at Scripps Health, led by their chief medical officer, Dr. Ghazala Sharieff, and her expert medical team.

After setting it up, Hall and Jacobson got to live it and make it real.

“Just amazing to see how this has all gone,” Hall says. “Normally around here we plan events well ahead, then make them happen. But with this, every day was something new, something we had to react to. You had to hold on tight and be ready for anything. Lots of anxiety out there; lots of stress. But you deal with it; you have to.”

Jacobson helped present the plan to the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency.

“They came out and liked what we'd set up to start,” she said. “They indicated before the meet that it looked like we were ready. Then after we got up and running, they came back and went over it again with us, step by step. Again, we got a green light.”

Then once the racing got rolling, there were Del Mar staff members filling extra roles, tackling the flare ups as they rose up. Some folks had two, three, sometimes as many as a half dozen different jobs and roles that they had to fill.

The track's ace credentials manager, Mark Bullock, had to wear four or five different hats at different times. His take: “It was really interesting to do someone else's job and find out what it was all about.”

Ryan Frear, who normally has a nice 9-5 office gig dealing with marketing and sponsors, suddenly found himself at the Stable Gate checking in backside workers from 4 a.m. to noon. “Certainly, it was very different,” he says. “My sleep schedule, well…. But I knew we needed help and I was willing to do that anyway I could. And it's allowed me to see up close how the backside of the track really works. I think it's going to help me be better at my 'real' job.”

Sue Walls, DMTC's VP for facilities, was yet another changing out chapeaus. She was the one who had to work with the track's janitorial staff and its leader, Shayla Ward, to make sure every inch of the track was cleaned repeatedly throughout both meetings. She earned the title “The Queen of Clean” for calling the shots not only on what was to be cleaned, but also what soaps, hand sanitizers and bleaches were to be gotten and used and where they were to be located.

“I got to know our janitorial staff real well,” she states. “They're a terrific bunch and they work very hard. I also got to fill the role of providing food and snacks to the jockeys, the valets and the racing staff in the jockeys' room every racing day. I love those guys. They're just great people to work with.”

She and Bullock combined to obtain and laminate more than a thousand safety signs that were posted all around the facility to call attention to needed things in the time of virus. If you had any doubts about what you should do in most any circumstance, the signs showed the way.

Regardless of the fact that it raced 25% fewer days in the summer of 2020 than it had the year before, wagering increased to $466 million compared to $431 million in 2019. Its daily average handle rose from $12 million last year to more than $17 million in 2020.

The fall session is running in a similar pattern. The racing is the best in the country right now; it is also the safest, and handle is up a remarkable 25% as the meet heads toward the finish.

It has not been easy. Lots of blood, sweat and tears have flowed. Del Mar dearly misses its fans; the joy of cheer and shouts and claps as they are coming down the stretch is a void that is all but impossible to fill. But Del Mar carries on; it helps to keep the sport alive and going forward in Southern California.

It has, in the end, followed the wise advice offered on safety signs that sit on the walls of all of its restrooms: “Keep Calm and Wash Your Hands.”
