Thanks To Strong Handle, Fair Grounds Will Increase Purses Another 10 Percent

For the second time in the young 2020-21 meet, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots has announced a 10 percent purse increase across the board. Much like the first, the boost was inspired by strong simulcast handle during the first seven weeks of the 149th racing season, which includes solid bettor response to the newly implemented traditional early and late Pick 5 wagers.

“Despite losing multiple days of turf racing, handle has remained quite strong,” Fair Grounds' racing secretary Scott Jones said. “Condition book four will be released the beginning of next week, and we're happy to be in a position to raise purses for a second time. We'd once again like to thank the owners, trainers and fans who have been supporting our day-to-day racing product.”

As a result of the increase, which will go into effect for condition book #4 (which starts Feb. 3, 2021), purses on allowance races will be bumped up $5,000, the mid-level races will be boosted by $3,000, while all other races will receive a $2,000 hike. Maiden special weight races will now be worth $55,000. The purse increase includes both open races and Louisiana-bred races.

Entries for the Wednesday, Feb. 3 card will be drawn one week earlier on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2021.

New COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines Released By Kentucky Department of Agriculture

As Central Kentucky Thoroughbred farms prepare to open their breeding sheds, the positivity rate for COVID-19 in the state is approaching 12 percent. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture released new health and safety guidelines for the Kentucky equine industry this week to help limit the spread of the virus.

Among the department's recommendations are the opening of barns to improve ventilation, limit the transfer of printed paperwork, and allow veterinary assistants to hold horses whenever possible to avoid unnecessary mingling with mobile veterinary workers and farm staffs at multiple properties.

For breeding shed runs, the department suggests having shed personnel take mares from van drivers or farm employees at the trailer and return them after cover to avoid extra people in the stallion farm or shed.

The guidelines suggest precautionary measures such as no physical contact between workers, electronic paper work only, frequent disinfecting of equipment/surfaces, allowing maximum airflow in barns by keeping doors and windows open, etc.

Gulfstream: Friday’s Rainbow 6 Pool Guaranteed At $1.5 Million

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1.5 million Friday at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 12th racing day in a row Thursday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $9,895.86.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover of $17,997.20.

A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 pool is scheduled for Saturday.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory-payout days, the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

Friday's Stronach 5 features races from Santa Anita Park, Laurel Park and Gulfstream Park and an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

The featured races from Gulfstream will be races nine and 10, both on the Gulfstream Turf.

Analysts and hosts from Laurel, Santa Anita and Gulfstream have come up with a $108 Stronach 5 ticket.

Blood-Horse To Change Frequency Of Print Magazine And Tablet Edition From Weekly To Monthly

BloodHorse announced today that, beginning April 1, 2021, the publication is changing the frequency of its print magazine and tablet edition from weekly to monthly and adding a premium online service.
