Over 500 Trainers Accepted To Thoroughbred Makeover

Edited Press Release

Some 512 trainers have been accepted to the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America, officials with the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) have announced. The event takes place Oct. 11-14, 2023, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington and offers prize money in excess of $100,000.

“On behalf of TCA, we congratulate all of the trainers accepted into the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover,” said Erin Halliwell, executive director of TCA. “We appreciate the time and resources trainers dedicate to transitioning Thoroughbreds into their next careers, and we appreciate the impact that the RRP and the Thoroughbred Makeover has made on the lives of thousands of Thoroughbreds over the years.”

The Makeover, the flagship event of the RRP, is open to professionals, juniors, amateurs and teams, all of whom compete with Thoroughbreds who raced or trained to race within the past two years and who have no more than 10 months of retraining. New for 2023, the Former Broodmare Division, sponsored by Claiborne Farm, will include former broodmares who recently retired from the breeding industry as well.

Competition at the Thoroughbred Makeover is available in ten disciplines, and trainers can choose to compete in up to two: barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunter, polo, ranch work, show hunter, show jumper, and freestyle (a free-form discipline to demonstrate skills of the trainer's choice).

“The 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover marks ten years since the event's pilot, a showcase of 23 horses on the homestretch of Pimlico Racecourse in 2013,” said Kirsten Green, executive director of the RRP. “While the Makeover still serves as a showcase for the breed, it has evolved to become an integral part of the aftercare industry, driving demand for Thoroughbreds who are completing their racing careers and offering participants the community and support needed to ensure they're successful with their horses.”

Katie LaMonica Elected To TRF Board

Edited Press Release

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) is pleased to announce the election of Katie LaMonica to the organization's Board of Directors. The TRF board provides leadership for carrying out the Foundation's mission to provide sanctuary for retired racehorses no longer able to compete on the racetrack and to save them from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter.

“We are thrilled to welcome Katie to the Board,” said Patrick Mackay, President and Chairman of the TRF. “Her longstanding experience within the Thoroughbred industry and her commitment to philanthropy make her a perfect fit as we continue to work towards the betterment of our herd of retired racehorses.”

A native of Lexington, Kentucky, LaMonica has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for over 20 years and has worked for Godolphin since 2003 in various capacities, most recently as the Charities Manager for America. In that role, she oversees the organization's global and local charitable initiatives.

“I am excited and privileged to join the TRF board,” said LaMonica. “The TRF was really the start of aftercare in the 80s and since its inception, it has provided many wonderful programs and outlets for OTTBs. More recently, the expansion of the TRF Second Chances Programs has filled a need for both human and horse, giving them a new purpose and a new start.”

Schosberg Claims Multiple Stakes Winner Twisted Tom To Retire Gelding At Age Eight

Twisted Tom, an 8-year-old multiple stakes winner and frequenter of the New York racing circuit, was claimed for $10,000 over the weekend so he could be retired.

The Daily Racing Form reported that trainer Richard Schosberg dropped the claim after hearing from breeders Drs. William Wilmot and Joan Taylor expressing concern for the gelding.

Twisted Tom boarded a van bound for ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption the next day.

Schosberg is the president of Take The Lead, the New York Racing Association's Thoroughbred retirement arm.

Twisted Tom leaves the track with $939,135 in earnings, picked up wins in the private Terms and Federico Tesio, as well as the New York Derby and Albany Stakes early in his career. More recently though, he had made appearances on the claiming circuit.

Schosberg told the Form's David Grening that he thought the horse may make a good jumper someday.

“We want to make sure these horses retire before they have major issues,” Schosberg said.
