Virtual Owner Conference Begins Tuesday

The seventh Thoroughbred Owner Conference will kick off Tuesday, Mar. 2, at 2 p.m. ET as the first of a series of 10 panels, each to be held virtually, on the first Tuesday of each month for the remainder of the year.

The first panel, “The Economics of Racehorse Ownership,” is sponsored by Keeneland and will delve into accounting, tax, legal, and insurance considerations associated with racehorse ownership. It will also include information on the costs of ownership, the fundamentals of running a racing stable, and owner responsibility for aftercare.

Moderated by horse racing television analyst Caton Bredar, the panel will consist of owners George Bolton and Maggi Moss; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, tax director, Dean Dorton.

“With more than 650 guests already registered for the virtual Thoroughbred Owner Conference series, we are excited to kick it off with an expert group of panelists that will provide invaluable information for new and veteran owners alike,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “While we will be posting replays of every session, we encourage those interested in the series to register in advance to get the best experience and to be able to ask questions in real time that will be addressed at the end of each panel.”

There is no fee to register for either the live or recorded sessions, but registration remains open and is required. The 2021 conference series is hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton Equine, Stoll Keenon Ogden, and Stonestreet Farm.

Thoroughbred Owner Conference To Be Offered As Free Series Of Virtual Panels Over Nine Months

OwnerView announced today that the 2021 Thoroughbred Owner Conference will be held as a free series of virtual panels over nine months. The conference series, hosted by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and presented by Bessemer Trust, Dean Dorton, and Stoll Keenon Ogden, will be held on the first Tuesday of each month starting March 2.

“This new format for 2021 enables us to offer informative, educational and enjoyable panels on Thoroughbred ownership to anyone interested from the convenience of wherever they happen to be,” said Gary Falter, project manager for OwnerView. “Each month's conference will cover a topic that is relevant to Thoroughbred ownership and, when possible, coincides with what is happening in the Thoroughbred industry at that time of year.”

The first panel of the series, sponsored by Keeneland, will be held Tuesday, March 2, and will cover the economics of racehorse ownership. Panelists are George Bolton, owner; Maggi Moss, owner; Sarah Reeves, attorney and member, Stoll Keenon Ogden; and Jen Shah, tax director, Dean Dorton. The panel will be moderated by Mike Penna of Horse Racing Radio Network.

“The economics of owning racehorses is one of the most essential aspects of ownership for new and even veteran owners, so we picked it as our first topic of the series,” Falter said. “Other topics are finding your Thoroughbred athlete, partnerships and syndicates, claiming Thoroughbreds, and five additional ownership topics.”

Each conference panel will be streamed live, and attendees will be able to ask questions during the discussion via typed messages that will be addressed at the end of each panel. Replays of the conference series panels will also be available at a later date.

“For the best experience and the option of asking questions in real time, we recommend registering for the series and watching live,” Falter said. “We will offer replays, but it will not be the same, interactive experience.”

There is no registration fee for the live or recorded virtual conference series, but registration is required. For more information about the owner conference series, including the schedule of panels and registration, please visit ownerview.com/event/conference or contact Gary Falter at gfalter@jockeyclub.com.

OwnerView is a joint effort spearheaded by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to encourage ownership of Thoroughbreds and provide accurate information on aspects of ownership such as trainers, public racing syndicates, the process of purchasing and owning a Thoroughbred, racehorse retirement, and owner licensing.

The need for a central resource to encourage Thoroughbred ownership was identified in the comprehensive economic study of the sport that was commissioned by The Jockey Club and conducted by McKinsey & Company in 2011. The OwnerView site was launched in May 2012.

Stride Racing Club Launches In New Zealand, Offering Fractional Lease Shares

An immersive Thoroughbred ownership experience, Stride Racing Club (SRC) is the newest racing concept to launch in the resurgent New Zealand racing industry.

SRC has collaborated with three of New Zealand's best-known stud farms – Waikato Stud, Windsor Park Stud and Haunui Farm – forming partnerships that allow SRC members to race three quality thoroughbreds through fractional lease shares.

Baby Face (Savabeel – Baby Shacks mare) kicked off SRC is great style winning the Fosters Construction Mile at Te Rapa on Dec. 19.

“Baby Face is a beautifully bred progressive mare that we see getting up through the grades, she will be a lot of fun for SRC members,” said trainer Stephen Marsh.

With a monthly membership fee of only $59 per month, SRC is offering a racing experience that is affordable, educational, social and fun, giving racing enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of thoroughbred ownership for a fraction of the price.

Members will enjoy all the ownership entitlements on race day, with behind-the-scenes opportunities, meet-and-greet with trainers, jockeys and racing personalities.

However, the intention behind the club is to also extend the racing experience and education opportunities beyond race day. Members will also be invited into the majestic grounds of SRC stud farm partners to tour and learn all about the breeding side of the industry. Members will spend time at SRC trainers' stables, gaining insight into the stable life of their horses and meeting and learning from the people who care for them.

Founders Matt Cruickshank and Chris Monaghan come from media and publishing backgrounds, and are long-time Thoroughbred owners and passionate racing enthusiasts. They have always believed that horse ownership should be about experience first.

“We wanted to provide an opportunity for members to not only be owners but to learn about the industry, meet the people that make the industry tick and be treated to visiting the magic places within the industry like our stud farm partner properties,” said Cruickhsnak.

“Stride Racing Club is like nothing else in the industry; it's all about connecting with the horse, the sport and the people involved in our great game. You join online, it's easy, affordable and will have you in the ownership of three equine athletes, how good!” said Monaghan.

There is plenty to look forward to with a calendar of events, including some in partnership with Auckland and Waikato Racing Clubs. SRC members receive preferential booking of free or discounted tickets to all these events.

SRC stable communication will be through UK-founded owners' communication app, The Racing Manager (www.theracingmanager.com).

“We wanted the best owners' communication app in the world,” said Cruickshank. “The Racing Manager is a step above anything we have seen in New Zealand and Australia so we're really excited to partner with TRM to launch into our part of the world.”

“We have really tried to deliver an ownership experience all industry stakeholders can see as a positive way for supporters or racegoers to get more involved in our sport. Ownership is the lifeblood of our industry, so we are asking for your support as we embark on new, progressive initiatives to help sustain the long-term viability of racing in New Zealand.”
