Del Mar Ship & Win Returns Richer Than Ever in ’22

Del Mar will offer its richest “Ship and Win” bonus when the program, designed to encourage out-of-state horses to compete in California, returns for its 12th year at the oceanside oval's summer meeting. This year's program offers a $5,000 starter bonus and a 50% purse supplement for any dirt runner. Turf horses earn a $4,000 starter fee and a 40% purse bonus.

The purse bonuses extend to additional starts at the summer meet and are designed to increase all purses won by first through fifth finishers. Further, should a 'S & W' horse be claimed out of its first outing and subsequently run back at the meet, the original owner will receive all bonuses.

“This has proven to be an exceptional program for Del Mar and California racing,” said David Jerkens, a Del Mar vice president and its racing secretary. “We strengthen our fields each summer with “Ship & Win” horses and the majority of them stay on and race in the state. Our local owners and trainers bring us the bulk of these out-of-state runners and our partnership with Santa Anita on this has worked very well.”

Thoroughbred Owners of California Chairman Gary Fenton added, “This has been an across the board winner for California. My two favorite aspects are always that a) our owners are the biggest recipients of the bonus and b) there is a benefit to the entire ecosystem as up to 10% of Santa Anita's field size is made up of 'Ship & Win' graduates. There isn't a more lucrative way to bring horses to California.”

TOC Announces Owner Awards

The Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) have announced the winners of its 2021 statistical awards for owners in the state.

Paul Reddam's Reddam Racing LLC was the leading owner by purse earnings in 2021, amassing $2,479,544, with 36 wins from 246 runners, topped by the likes of GII Los Alamitos Futurity hero Slow Down Andy (Nyquist) and Awake At Midnyte (Nyquist), a debut winner and a nose second in the GIII Jimmy Durante S. last season.

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds was the leading owner by number of California wins and starts (52/253) for earnings of $1,461,335. Their top performers included Keeperof the Stars (Midnight Lute), who just missed against the boys in the GIII San Francisco Mile and California Derby hero Stalking Shadow (Ministers Wild Cat).

Baoma Corporation was California's leading owner by California stakes wins with eight. The operation was represented in 2021 by MGSW Private Mission (Into Mischief) and GI Starlet S. heroine Eda (Munnings) among others.

All winners will be recognized at TOC's Annual Meetings at Del Mar Racetrack Saturday, Aug. 13 and at Golden Gate Fields Saturday, Oct. 22.

New Injury Prevention Study To Begin Using Horses In Southern California

Southern California will participate in a groundbreaking study aimed at identifying and avoiding potential injuries in racehorses by analyzing messenger RNA (mRNA) markers in blood samples. The research project is being conducted by the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Center.

The goal is to develop mRNA technology into a reliable, non-invasive tool that will empower owners and trainers by providing an additional method for improving the welfare and longevity of their racehorses. Participation in this study is a means by which owners and trainers can contribute towards this important goal.

The project involves the collection of an additional blood sample at the time of TCO2 testing. These samples will then be used to validate previously compiled data to identify specific markers for horses at risk for a catastrophic injury. The study will be overseen by Dr. Tim Grande at Santa Anita. Sample collection is expected to begin in mid-February.

Since samples are collected quickly (5 seconds) and during a time when the horse is already being stuck with a needle, participation in this study entails minimal disruption for the trainer and minimal risk to the horse. If you do not want your horse to participate in this study, please make that known at the time of TCO2 sample collection.

TOC Reports Significant Increase In California Purses In 2021

Total money generated from pari-mutuel wagering for the benefit of California Thoroughbred purses increased to $118.4 million in 2021 from $99.8 million in 2020, according to data released Jan. 26 by the Thoroughbred Owners of California. This growth was supported in part by an increase in the total number of daytime Thoroughbred races run in California – from 2,469 in 2020 to 2,785 in 2021.

“These 2021 purse generation numbers are a great indicator of the power and resilience of California racing,” said TOC chairman Gary Fenton. “We are particularly excited to see the substantial increase of wagering on California races from both California residents and out-of-state handicappers, which grew from $1.48 billion in 2020 to $1.806 billion in 2021. The good news continues, as these purse generation figures do not include the $7 million in supplemental purse contributions TOC negotiated with TVG or the $28 million of 2021 Breeders' Cup weekend purses, so the actual purses paid out in California were even higher. Even better,” Fenton concluded, “the horse population is going up again, and purse levels are also expected to rise again in 2022. It's never been a better time to race in California.”

According to TOC, these purse generation numbers exclude purses generated on the two days of the Breeders' Cup Championship weekend at Del Mar as those funds revert to Breeders' Cup Ltd. in exchange for its funding of the purses for Breeders' Cup Championship and undercard races.
